I'd first seen them at Glastonbury this year and loved them so much, I immediately used some of  my precious data at the festival to book tour tickets! Michael Kiwanuka at Jacaranda Baltic in Liverpool. 

 

A stripped back album launch show so you only get about 45 minutes, but always nice to see bigger acts in a small venue.

Fontaines D.C., Cardiff, last night.

 

One of the best active bands in the world on top form, playing their biggest shows yet (not for long, admittedly), to an absolutely raucous crowd. Was surprised at how many 16-18 year olds were there, but was pretty well behaved considering. A few moments of 'really, lads?' in the crowd, particularly when some of the younger lot insisted on opening a mosh pit up for every song - you cannot mosh to I Love You.

 

Grian was a lot more active than when I've seen them previously, and really put a shift in at working the crowd up. No chat with the crowd of course, I've never known an act to be so unanimously disinterested with racountering, but that's fine, they're not there for that.

 

I do wonder how they manage to keep up these intense shows when you consider the never-ending length of their touring schedule? On a UK-leg now of a tour that's already spanned Europe and the USA. Back to the USA next year, and then every festival on Earth, plus outdoor headline shows back in Blighty. Plus, they supported Arctic Monkeys in USA last year, and played 100+ shows in 2022. I really, really wish they had some time off.

Sports Team raised the roof at Trinity Bristol last night . At one point it appeared that half the crowd were onstage!

Jason Isbell at Hammersmith Apollo last night. Unsurprisingly fantastic. I don't know what magic he brings to songs that just catch you with terrible poignancy. Such adult songs as well about love and loss and life.

Went to Idles in Glasgow on Saturday, haven’t seen them before, not for any particular reason, just hadn’t had the chance.

they were incredible, the energy in the place was electric!

Snap, were you at the early or late showing? I wasn’t too far behind you if you were at the early show. Been some great pre album launch gigs in there this year, £35 for the gig and a vinyl, can’t go wrong.

I caught them myself in Amsterdam on Sunday, both them and Wunderhorse in support were on top form. Very much agree that I’d like to see them take a break after their 2025 shows!

Already had tickets for Idles or I would have gone to this, I see he has a show at the Barbican announced for February so going to try for that

Yep, I was at the early one. The only problem with these lauch shows is if you've already pre-ordered the album. I wish they'd announce them at the same time they announce the album, but logistically it's probably not possible.

 

Maybe they should give you a way to buy the ticket without another copy of the album if you've already ordered it.

Would make sense mate but the cheaper cd/cassette tickets only tend to be about £20 which still offers decent value. I think they only put these shows on to shift a few more physical albums in the streaming age. Managed to catch Kiwanuka, Wunderhorse, Fontaines DC and Yard Act this year. Would still aim for a full show at the tour but given I'd buy the vinyl anyway, can't argue with a more intimate gig added in for next to nothing!

Popped by to see Villanelle in Bristol last night. Enjoyed it, band were very good.

I was quite surprised how low key it was. GG and band selling their own pretty basic range of merch afterwards etc.

Saw Paris Paloma last night at O2 Academy2 Birmingham, which I was only too happy to book tickets for after happening upon her this year at BBC Introducing on our way between overrated, over-packed Shania and Alvvays at Woodsies.

 

An excellent show (after the release of a similarly excellent album), some proper good tunes, I'd describe as ethereal indie folk. Could see her doing brilliantly in an afternoon slot at The Park or on the Acoustic Stage next year.

went to see Charli last night, she started coming on about 8.50pm we only just made it in in time as queues for toilets and bars were half an hour between the 2. It was all done by 10.10pm and is probably my main gripe. She got through 20 songs so no major gripe, just that it went very quick and maybe i'm spoilt with longer shows whenever i've been to arena level gigs before.

 

It kept it high energy throughout the majority, and the atmosphere was electric throughout for such a high scale gig.

Just out of The Script in Leeds. Historically very polished in that double-tracked manner, but a few struggles tonight - not quite the purely slick affair of years gone by. 

 

Reminded me immensely of Keane earlier this year at the same venue - a bit of heavy lifting done behind the scenes.

Interesting chat here. I saw someone on another thread call Fontaines "this generations Razorlight" but surely not. razorlight were objectively shite. I only saw them once, hungover, early at a Reading festival and it was simply terrible. 

 

Am 80 mins long arena show sounds controversial.

Saw Razorlight in Leeds last month and they were unexpectedly good.

IDLES at Liverpool Arena last night. The venue was too big for them but the sound was excellent and they put on a great show. Sadly, we missed Lambrini Girls but will be seeing them at their own gig in the not too distant future.
