Facts:

Jay Z’s released before Glastonbury got to just 30th in the album charts.

That was 23 places lower than Dizzee Rascal’s.

This is inconsistent with the statement ‘Jay Z was a more popular artist than Dizzee Rascal in the UK pre Glastonbury’.

Not facts:

Crazy in love and Umbrella are mainly known as Jay Z songs.

Facts:

Harry Styles’ music is not well regarded by critics.

Harry Styles is the Man City of music. Fair enough he’s won the league a few times. But with all the money spent, his consistent bottling of the champions league had got to be a source of frustration to his masters.

What some are forgetting here is that Jay-Z is a seminal figure in hip hop. Not just a generational figure but Mount Rushmore level for an entire musical genre. Dizzee had a breakout first album and a couple of less decent follow ups, but there was a chasm between them when it came to influence and reach.

Dizzee in 2008 isn’t even comparable to Stormzy in 2019, even though Boy In Da Corner is superior to anything Stormzy’s put out. Dizzee was an exciting new star. Stormzy’s almost a spokesperson.

Standing is as important as any other factor.

This is my point though.

Dizzee Rascal is as seminal in UK rap. And Glastonbury is in the UK. No Dizzee Rascal, no Stormzy.

Like if we’re talking about young rappers in the UK coming through in the 2000s and early 2010s, aren’t they more likely to list Dizzee Rascal in their influences than Jay Z?

Maybe it’s just me that sees the ever increasing financialisation and centralisation or power in the music industry as a bad thing.

And I just have to accept that the globalisation of music is inevitable and that my kids will more interested in seeing whatever the next massive factory assembled K-pop act headlining Glastonbury than seeing some local band work their way up and get a leg up?

Just makes me sad.

For me, in a perfect world, Glastonbury would pie off the Simon Cowell adjacent reality TV star Harry Styles and give it to Wolf Alice - a great female fronted band that have been grafting away on the UK music scene for a decade, including as time served Glastonbury rockers.

To show all the teenage girls out there that your destiny can be to rock out to the adulation of a hundred thousand people, rather than to simply pine after whatever young handsome fella the record industry puts in front of you.

Facts: The UK public bought hip-hop as singles not albums in the 2000s, which is why Jay-Z placed so frequently at the time in the chart that mattered.

He didn’t though did he. Absolutely nobody thinks of Crazy in Love and Umbrella as Jay Z songs. To say so is self deception.

Minus the ‘it’s ya boi’ ft. tracks, he hadn’t had a top 10 single since 2002…

If people bought hip hop as singles, why did nobody buy his singles? And why did enough people buy Dizzee Rascals albums to put it what was it 25? Places higher than Jay Z’s.

In behavioural science, you know what another term for logical inconsistency is? Bias. And your arguments are absolutely littered with logical inconsistencies.

My feeling is that she got so big from 2019 that now it's clearly headliner material at this stage. I have a feeling she won't be there and will be headlining next time.

Doesn't sell enough.

Yeah agreed.

Also I don't see Emily making it Dua vs Florence tbh. I'm truly beginning to wonder if it's Billie/Dua/Florence. Would be a big statement to have three women. (if I was Dua I'd rather wait until I had a new album to headline tho, she's been pushing FN since 2019!)

Definitely rather than trio than Harry in there.

Well said, bit to sensible for round here though.

I think obviously music, sales and popularity are all very important to being considered headline worthy but sometimes the status and social influence of the person just pushes them up. Stormzy is the perfect example, yes his music was catching a lot of attention but stormzy the spokesman and what he stood for really elevated him to headline worthy.

I won't be at the pyramid for Billie or Harry (if he's announced) as the music isn't my taste but they both similarly have an influence in society and strong messages  that makes them headliner worthy

If someone gets enough downvotes, do they get booted so the rest of us don’t need to stomach their unnecessarily horrible bile any more?

No, downvotes alone won't get you booted.  Now, someone that attracts loads of downvotes may well do stuff that gets them booted, but there are posters on here with far lower rep that are still here.  It's not a democracy.

Barry Fish is a big tory hence his low downvotes but he still swims around on here.

....

What's that you were saying about bias, logical inconsistencies and self-deception there, fella?

I don’t deny my bias is towards UK based acts that have been on a more organic journey.

But I think that through your more international music fan lens, you don’t see that although Jay Z was bigger globally and an icon in the hip hop world in 2008, Dizzee Rascal had enjoyed a similar level of chart success in the UK and was probably a similar size live act in the uk in 2008.

+ enjoyed probably a similar level of notoriety/appeal to Joe Bloggs glasto goer pre glasto 2008. That’s what I think.

And then my bias would be that if given that choice, I’d like to see Glastonbury recognise its unique position as not having to obey the music industry trends to the letter, and to exercise its independence by whenever possible choosing to give a leg up to a ‘nearly there’, preferably UK based, act who doesn’t perhaps benefit from the full might of the industry behind them.

That has always been the way as it not. Macca being one of the first. Not sure that will ever change

Again, because Glastonbury has that degree of independence from the industry, if change can start anywhere, it is at Worthy Farm.

Why not an all female (fronted) headline bill this year? Billie Eilish, Wolf Alice and who else is in the running? Dua Lipa? Florence?

I don't doubt that Glastonbury would have an all female line up at all. That change has already happened I would say.

Not sure on say wolf alice, sadly I don't think they are big enough (maybe they are for all I know)  and Glastonbury just is not that type of Festival anymore, that ship sailed. That could change I guess but not yet

He does, but only as a fish in his own hopeful mind. He’s little Timmy Tadpole to most of us.
