This is such an important point I think. I remember seeing a lot of awful photos of the situation in Italy back in Feb/March and then when it came here that side of things just seems to be sanitised. I do think it contributes to people thinking it's fake.

Been away from this site over Christmas so just trying to catch up.

We think the Oxford/AstraZeneca approval might be tomorrow morning then? I think I read earlier this week that vaccinations may begin on the 4th.

My sister (nurse) got her first vaccination on 22/12 so hopefully by this weekend she should start to have some of the benefits of immunity. My dad is the at risk one in our household (extremely clinically vulnerable, 59) so hopefully with the Oxford approval he might get his first jab around February time although that is maybe a little optimistic.

It has probably been discussed, but the Novavax vaccine has become the 5th vaccine to enter Phase 3 trials. Good news on that front.

Excuse my ignorance on this as the answer is probably to do with politics and I do my best to keep away from the political squabbling and point scoring but why does everyone say ‘instead of clapping we should do this’ or ‘instead of clapping we should have done that’?

Surely we don’t have to choose one or the other?

We can clap for the workers to show our appreciation for them but still want them to have better working conditions. We can clap for the staff to thank them and still want them to have a pay rise. We can clap for the NHS but still want them to have more funding.

Who decided it must be one or the other? Who decided that anyone who claps doesn’t want things to improve for the NHS?

The issue is that the clapping was essentially a meaningless gesture to promote on people’s social media, as when push came to shove and public sector workers pay was frozen hardly any of the people that clapped made a fuss at all.

there is also the thing about promoting things in a positive light ... I saw nothing around government messaging that showed the direct impact of wearing facemasks .... it was all mixed in with the hands , face , space message .... It could be have been sold in a far better way ... My colleague who is off because hes got covid has caused others to need to isolate because he wasnt wearing one .... 😞

I've got a feeling they'll be paid a lot more when the private system comes in...I don't see how the NHS survives this next few months in it's current form. Staff will leave otherwise and public trust in it will be broken as the missed cancer and other diseases starts to become more known

My god what a beautiful day it currently is down here in the South West.

Been on my 2nd run in 2 days and really feeling great.

Exercise is definitely the answer to feeling negative.

My advice is to get amongst it guys and the added bonus is if you exercise you’re in better shape for the fight against COVID should you be unfortunate enough to get it!

All the doctors I know (my Mrs is one) are motivated by working for the NHS, and the common good that it provides. My Mrs has no desire to do any private work.

She's hugely ground down by the last year (as a geriatric registrar), but her faith in the NHS remains as strong as it ever was. And most shifts she's currently covering 4-5 times the number of "safe" patients.

She'd quit if it was private or nothing.

There's not really anything new there - They've been in Phase 3 trials in the UK since September and are expected to publish the first results in a couple months time. The launch this week is just an American version.

Even if we only count the "Western" vaccines. there's currently 6 candidates at Phase 3 - and something like 20 when you add in the ones from Russia/China/India/etc.

Hear hear.

The clap always really rubbed me up the wrong way because it struck me struck me as a way for people to feel good about themselves without actually having to do anything meaningful or lasting. Really didn't help that it got somewhat hijacked and turned into one of those things people get pressured into doing as such a matter of course that it loses all meaning.

yeah, me too...although I expect some health care workers did appreciate it...whereas now no one seems to know or care the shit they're going through..

They’d probably appreciate a pay rise more though 😉

I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll have to say it again: Fuck the ERG, bunch of retrograde hard right weirdos who want to drag everyone back to their invented version of some glorious past.

at least they're bothering to actually read the thing and then make a decision based on principle...whereas labour will just support it to please something called red wall voters.

The clap to me was absolutely fine ... it provided a morale boost to some which is no bad thing ... however it did need backing up from government with a pay award ... or something to show people support those people in the longer term ....

I agree but it also needs following up from people to bring about any change. If it’s easy to post videos clapping then it’s easy to kick up a fuss when those people you were clapping for get treated like dirt.

Yeah I'm not expecting everyone to share the ornery/cynical viewpoint I took of it, I know there are good people for whom it did good things.

Ultimately though, and I don't think this is too dissimilar to the points you and @Ozanne are getting at, is that for me the clap could/should have been the means to an end, while too many people took it as an end in and of itself.

The Clap or The Clap?
