Tribute Bands?

Seems to be quite a good and popular thing to have on one of the smaller stages on Wednesday or Thursday, but can certainly see the point about the challenge it creates for new artists on later days.

Well, predicting that the entire Rabbit crew wanted to nip off and watch the real stones, a made up band name was listed which would enable this by effectively putting a “back in 2 hours” note on the door  

Unfortunately the made up band actually existed and kind of complicated things by suddenly expecting to play Glasto.  

It was basically opening day when this was realised so they didn’t actually get to play that year, but were officially invited to play the following year instead.

I'm still 900 responses short of my ideal target so I really need a big push tonight if you could help? Ideally I need 2000 responses, so the more responses, the more chance I'll get a better grade and make the study valid (68% would guarantee me a distinction).

The Railing Stains.  We actually saw them the following year cos they were starting up just as Yoko Ono finished.

I’d gladly see an established “tribute” band at Glasto with a decent crowd.. What I’d rather not see is the likes of Colin from accounts who dresses up as Annie Lennox and performs as the Eurymichaels  down the local boozer on a Friday evening

Anyway... I've seen quite a few tribute acts over the years, there used to be a 3 day festival over August bank holiday in Liverpool which had loads of them on, it was always a good laugh until it was stopped for being too lairy. The thing was though, it was free. Happy to see a tribute band but refuse to pay to see one. 

There seems to be the same 4 tribute bands that somehow get a pass at Glastonbury, The Smyths, The Bootleg Beatles, Bjorn Again and the Fleetwood Mac one whose name escapes me. I also remember there being a Stones one who (I may have dreamt this) were booked to play The Rabbit Hole at the same time as the actual Stones? It just seems wrong to me.

I have somewhat hypocritically seen The Bootleg Beatles twice at Glastonbury. Once in the Acoustic and once on the Pyramid when they did the thing with the small orchestra but I would though rather it was an original band being given the spot. 

The Stones would have been one to "tick" off but I made the decision on the day which act would I have most fun at.

(A) Standing in a very busy field waiting for a few songs that I would enjoy mostly watching them on a TV screen.

(B) Dancing in a tent having an hour long sing a long and a laugh.

I can see your point RE original bands playing before tribute acts but with the choices above I would always choose B.

Our local music venue is always booking frickn tribute bands - ugh. The only use for them would be to draw a crowd BEFORE a new act were presented.

I'll tolerate a tribute band if the original band is long gone, dead, no members left. Not even going to see "From the Jam" or "The Stranglers" - with that talentless twat singing (saw Hugh C. recently and wow, the difference)

That said, if a SAHB tribute band turned up, I'd be there!!

Correct. I left my mates who were standing in a pocket of shit sound to find a speaker stack and found a load of other Stones fans who'd done the same. Much chicken dancing, finger waving, pouting and drinks sharing went down. Start me up!

I'm really torn on the tribute band question.  I enjoy seeing and hearing music I love performed well live and if the original band is no more or no longer touring the only way to get that live experience is going to be with a tribute band.  There are some very good ones (Australian Pink Floyd, Brit Floyd, Bootleg Beatles etc.) who work hard to put on great shows.  I don't see that as very different to someone performing classical music by Beethoven or Chopin.  Is their music no longer to be performed because they are dead?

But I also understand the argument that says doing tribute stuff is a soft option and we should be encouraging new music and creativity.  A young(ish) British blues guitarist I've championed is Danny Bryant.  He's been determined to establish himself in his own right, writing and developing his own material.  In his early days he says he could have made a lot more money and got a lot more work if he'd gone out as a Hendrix tribute act but he was determined to stick to his guns and it has now paid off.

So, on balance, I reckon there's a place for both, especially in a festival as large and with as many stages as Glastonbury.

Where it gets really difficult for me ares the 'part' bands, where some original members have left or died.  What do the remaining members do - pack it in because the full original band is no more - or continue to earn/perform as a 'son of/spin off'?

Examples would be Ray Davies, who re-worked the Kinks stuff, most of which he wrote.  His Choral Kinks set remains one of my Glastonbury stand out moments, or The Who, who are only part of the original band or, for that matter, The Stones.  Others would include Jefferson Airplane/Starship or Roger McGuinn doing his Byrds stuff.

Get Hayseed Dixie. Not really a tribute band more than a pisstake...

I’m no fan of tribute acts, I’d rather see a random new band and take my chances. Only seen one at Glastonbury, the Bootleg Beatles, will do my best to avoid others. 

I’m not really very keen on seeing bands without key people (Queen for example) never mind tribute bands.

Yeah, they're not my cup of tea.  Clearly the people involved are talented musicians (if not creative), but it's not really for me.  If it's going to be songs without the relevant band involved I'd prefer something like Baggy Mondays. At least that's proud of being a beered up jukebox!

See also musicals based on a bands musical catalogue. Just....no.

If it’s gonna be a tribute band or a covers band, then at the very least they need to do stuff a bit differently. Hayseed Dixie cover all sorts of stuff in a bluegrass stylee. Elvana are Elvis-fronted Nirvana. They’re not just knocking out standard pub rock style straight covers. I’ve got a Trojan box set of bands covering the Beatles by way of reggae and dub, and it’s a right bloody laugh

Oh yeah, that kind of thing's a different kettle of fish entirely.  Still gutted with myself for missing Ade Edmonson & the Bad Shepherds in 2010, folk versions of punk tracks. And things like Easy Star All Stars are up there too.

I don't know which I find less endearing tbh, the ones like Bjorn Again and Bootleg Beatles who go the full dress up, or ones like the Pink Floyd tribute I saw with my in laws a good few years ago where it's just some blokes in jeans on a stage with no pretence at all.
