He certainly knew how to produce a timeless Christmas banger, the murderous old freak

I've worked several retail Xmases and also festive burger flipping and I'm still here to tell you that man who's tired of Darlene Love is tired of life itself.

The whole album always gets played in our house at Xmas.

None of the songs on there were on Nevada Bob's aka American Golf's retail Xmas tape loop, so it's all good.

Ray Conniff - Ring Christmas Bells. Simultaneously very festive and rather unsettling; makes you think Santa’s going to come down your chimney to slaughter your children

Ugh. What horrible, frantic, anxiety inducing awfulness.

It makes me feel like the apocalypse has suddenly descended upon us and is about to kill us all

Paul McCartney is my favourite Beatle and John Lennon probably my 4th favourite.

Macca’s solo work craps all over Lennon’s. Especially the god-awul Imagine.

However, the one area in which John trumps Paul is Christmas songs.

This is the exact opposite of the truth!?

Compare and contrast-

Lennon:

McCartney:

And yer man

...and thanks for highlighting two great Macca basslines! :)

I liked everything about those songs apart from the basslines. Now that I have conclusively proven that John Lennon's Beatles songs are better than McCartneys, I'll move onto the solo stuff:

Vs McCartney

The evidence speaks for itself ?

You've got to admit, that Giles guy knows how to make a decent modern stereo mix.

Oh fuck me it sounds beautiful yeah. New neighbours are loving me Id say. Rockin and a rollin at 8am.

As an obvious aside, what an album. Still. Not sure theres an album I've listened to more.

They really did take care of their master tapes at Abbey Road.  Compared to say, The Beach Boys reissues, which are often based on 2nd or 3rd gen masters, these are all pristine originals and cleaned up they sound great.  It's pretty mind boggling how modern software has been able to isolate the parts from an 8 track mix to be placed in the stereo image - I mean, I get the impression they're placing stuff in a different place that was originally bounced down onto the same track.  Cracking stuff.

No question they are. Thats good and bad imo, diluting the Beatles pool. John, George, G Martin all brown bread. The kids these days growing up with Yokos bit in Bungalo Bill higher in the mix!

The horror....
