well Radiohead playing a couple of hours earlier on the Pyramid stage is basically the same level of attention, so i'm not sure what difference it would make?

Yes, of course they're as big as many recent headliners and in most years could headline the stage. I don't think you'd find many people who would claim otherwise.

But they couldn't do so this year, given that the 3 Pyramid headliners appear to have been booked since before Radiohead made their plans and that 2 of them are unquestionably bigger (the other one is arguable, but regardless of relative size was still booked first).

So this year, the choice would be accept a slot lower than Pyramid headline, or don't play at all.

Yeah, kind of with you on that one. I don't think it can be argued that Adele is bigger than Radiohead, but I wouldn't call them has-beens. Their albums still do very well and they still command a huge amount of interest (trending on Twitter just before they dropped their album being a good case in point), but I'd still be surprised if they headlined the Pyramid again - as much as I'd love to see it - I don't think much of the new wave of music fans would give much of a shit about them, to be honest. And if the band really were that bothered about all this, their sets would be FAR more The Bends/OK Computer-heavy than they are.

(Though I kind of feel the same about the likes of AC/DC, but the world seems to begging them to headline, so what do I know?!)

If they've asked to play this year whilst the album is still relatively new ... And the headliners were booked months ago - then they have no alternative but to sub. 

If they're willing to play for a sub's fee and are happy to do it, then I don't see any issues at all. They don't appear to have overly inflated egos in that sense like the majority of bands their size/stature.

I'm not sure if that's a wise bet to make. Not on the day where it seems more likely than ever that they might actually play in that slot.
