This thread just reminded me of something. Anyone remember some place called the 'Twisted Disco' or similar in the late night area? This would have been around 2008 or 2009.

They gave you some crazy glasses that messed with your vision, then sent you into a nightclub type place that was basically like a house but with wonky floors, sofas on the wall etc. I remember it being brilliant fun at the time.

Found this establishment in 2008 whilst tripping on some nice shrooms, of all the places we could have wandered into :)

It's still great but of the 3 times I've been 2011 was the best of Shangri La, this year the worst (well....equal to last year I guess, was pretty similar). I think it's just a victim of it's own success. Far too many DnB heads who basically sack off the bands during the day whilst they recover from the night before and get back on it again till 6am. Nothing wrong with that in itself but it ruins what the area used to be for me. Too many people heading there to see the big name DJs - it's basically taken over from the Dance village to become the actual dance area of the site, meaning it's lost the charm of it being a unique late night explore zone

Heaven + hell would work much better over in the dance field and let Shangri La get back to being a weird place you slowly explore. I'm sure back in 2011 I remember the crowd that went there being much more mixed, older, less drug orientated. At risk of phrasing it badly, most people I saw there were typical dance music fanatics in big groups, aged 20-28 or so. Basically there like they've gone out for a night in Fabric with their mates.

Sack off Heaven + Hell, get the alleyways back to what it was and vary the music on there to make it less like a big nightclub (why is everything DnB or reggae at the moment??)

Having said all that I still love it for what it is and had a great night there this year, but I miss what it used to be in equal measure

I think your spot on here, like the idea of that

It always amazes me reading these threads as I just never see any of this stuff! My own fault as I generally only get there when it's too busy and I can't hack the crowds. Always tell myself I'll go when headliners are on but there's always someone I want to see or it Sunday and I'm just too tired. I always feel I'm missing out on loads of cool stuff. Made it down there during the day on the Thursday and then early evening and that was ace but a lot of micro venues weren't open.

All u miss is drum and bass and crowds really. Go in the day, it's better

Yep, I had some great times in the late afternoon/evening there this year. Loads of room to dance like a prat at Genosys too. You do miss the whole theatrical side of Shangri-La though.

Spending Thursday evening and night down there was a great way to start the festival. Beans on Toast, Akala, then a wander round Shangri La before it got too busy over the weekend. Perfick.

I do think Shangri La could do with a revamp though, although I'm not sure they can do much to solve the crowding problem.

Thursday seems to have become my traditional Copperdollar night. I'll quite happily go to the corner any night though as my level of intoxication + being used to commuting on the tube means the crowds don't bother me.

Personally I'd get rid of large venues (Heaven + Hell) as they spill out everywhere and increase the performance side of the place and the nano venues. Yes, the nano venues will still be rammed, they always have been, but that's because they're nano and I think being in a tiny, crowded party cube is part of their charm (although I know others will disagree). The performances/weird non-party rooms will distract those that want a bit of craziness and are not so bothered about the music. Those that want proper music and room to dance can piss off to Block 9.

Yeah, to be honest I didn't mind the crowds myself on the Friday. Sunday at heaven did seem a bit extreme though, glad I just gave up and headed for Glasto Latino instead. Glasto Latino is the bomb.

I didn't make it into Copperdollar at all this year, but I absolutely loved that place in 2014. It's going right to the top of my 2016 list.

Same here but I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm too old to be there after the rush has gone around four am and still be alive enough to do all I want to do in daytime.

I'm at peace with that now. Impossible to do it all. Just have to enjoy what I'm doing rather than worry about what I'm missing.

Still get jealous afterwards, mind.

Can relate to that, I'm 33 now and I can't handle going to bed at 6.30am and getting up and functioning the following day (even worse if the tent is like a sauna)

The thing is pretty much everyone on the site looks for something after hours now and there isn't enough the organisers can do to ensure there is something for everyone without it being busy.

Great post, totally agree. I do think the brilliance of 2011 was partly the weather putting people off and adding to the post-apocalyptic feel of the alleyways. That Friday night in there, utterly Gillespied in the pouring rain, was one of the best nights of my life.

Which year had the glass wave, the hub and the underwater bar with the fish ladies pole dancing and no apparent way in?

May have been '10 I think I remember a temple to bono with marionettes performing

you're thinking of Fish N Tits 2008-10 which became Sick Sick Sick and is now ShangriLati - "love fucking your mind" the one with the poles

more late night stuff in the park would be good, actually think the main stage should be smaller and the bigger bands play on the other stage(there was alot of tripe on the other stage that could have been filled with decent bands from the park)

then have more less well known bands on the smaller park stage and have some more late night weirdness in the park

yeah

In 2008 my sister and I were lured into a smallish dome tent and given 3D glasses, I think it was a 3D disco but it was weird! Great fun though! Loads of graphics all over the place, great music and people dancing about. We just sort of stood there for about half an hour watching everything!! I don't think it's the same place you mean, unless it went further and we just stayed in the one room.

what was the place this year with chiptone music and projections all over the place? Was it Brainwash which was a 2d version! :)

Edited to add with bubbles - so it must have been brainwash

That sounds good! I went to Shangri la on Thursday for Bean on Toast but didn't go back I don't think. As others have said, it's just a bit too crowded for my liking. I had some nice nights elsewhere, although can't really remember where now!

I would MUCH rather see a band at The Park than Other

According to people in the know the bands prefer it too.

The Other Stage is a sort of halfway house these days. Bands that wouldn't quite work on other stages get chucked on the Other. Its name has (d)evolved from mildly comic to full on descriptive. Odds n Sods.
