couple of years ago, i got to go in sensory room for kids with hearing and sight issues. was utterly amazing, very trippy. couple of the best hours i've ever spent in a room. something like that at glastonbury would be fun

Before the South East Corner was the South East Corner they had a roller skating rink built in that area somewhere - not exactly sure where but I would guess somewhere between where Rocket Diner and Hell stage are now.

It would have been 98, 99 or 2000.

I remember texting my wife on the Sunday morning, saying you won't guess what I'm doing at Glasto - Roller Disco.

Was onlt there the one year. I think they had problems with some of the 8x4 floor boards becoming loose. Having wooden pillars in thye middle of the roller arena didn't help either

On the Thursday night we went into the common and a bar with a waterfall outside, they were playing some really good hip hop and rap songs, not normally my cup of tea but it was great fun, as it was my first year Shangri la was a must, and at first I was blown away at what was going on, but then after going on the Friday and Saturday it got a bit samey! Fat whites and slaves were great to see, especially at that time of the night because you would never get that any where else but I felt a bit underwhelmed. This could just be me having ridiculously high expectations I suppose

thing is, those tents were never really official, and Glastonbury is a very different beast these days - i just don't think they'd get permission to make late night noise in that area otherwise they'd probably be doing it.

plus i was watching some footage of the market raves recently - they would have to be brought up to date cos with 20 years passed they looked a bit crap - nostalgia is a powerful thing.  and you'd be fucked if it rained down there!

The Cave.

We went there multiple times last year, literally just walked straight in no queues or anything. This year everytime we walked past it there was a massive queue. Everything in the SE Corner just seemed a lot more rammed this year :(

Only went in twice this year.

Thursday - went and saw Beans on Toast then was in NYC Downlow bar till about 1am - had a decent night.

then

Friday  - went after Arcadia had closed and at the age of 33 and a regular drug user since the age of 16, i had my first proper 'freak out' and that was due to the crowds and crushing going around the Hell stage.  Couldn't handle it and had to leave straight away.

I think there is now some sort of level of expectation with it all now, you never really see any campfires going on anymore because everyone is  gurning their faces off at Arcadia, The Stone Circle or the  S.E Corner.

An entire re-jig of late night stuff would upset a lot of people I think.

I can't really recall what was down there in the early years that I went - Lost Vaugeness? And was it even that popular?  What areas used to be popular post sound-systems in the markets but pre -Shangri-La ??

This thread just reminded me of something. Anyone remember some place called the 'Twisted Disco' or similar in the late night area? This would have been around 2008 or 2009.

They gave you some crazy glasses that messed with your vision, then sent you into a nightclub type place that was basically like a house but with wonky floors, sofas on the wall etc. I remember it being brilliant fun at the time.

I thought the music in the SE corner was dreadful this year. I love my House and DnB but it seemed to play music purely on the fringes. NYC Downlow was like a North Korean military march. Dead eyed zombies bopping along to the most minimal beat I have ever heard.

I think it falls into 2 categories as to what people expect of the SE Corner (or what they used to expect for the veterans)

a late night area combining music/bars/clubs/art/exhibits/theatre/bands

or

a late night dance area with some elements of art / theatre...a kind of manumission / gatecrasher / Ibiza club experience for the old ravers amongst us...(The Downlow is perhaps so many people's favourite as it does the theatre / entertainment side so well along with the music)

I've only been to Glastonbury twice, I still go clubbing quite a lot even though im in my late 30's, dance music is a huge draw for me at festivals, and certainly why I head to SE Corner at night and I would suggest (and the feeling from our crowd that go) that the majority of people going to SE corner just want a late night dance area, and that more dance tents/stages should be put on to suit that as the problem with the area is a question of space, music policy and sound levels not really about the artistic statement / politics being made within the SE Corner.

as for a music policy ...yes, have some drum n bass, but programming needs to be a lot better so have more choice of house/techno etc when drum n bass djs are on.

as for the late night bars/theatre/artier side, could this not be accommodated within Williams green / leftfield / the park?

how was the northern soul night in Williams green?...one of the things I wished I'd went round to check on actually.

I really liked it. Lots of peeps dancing.

The guilty pleasures thing was fun on Thursday too.

But Williams Green ends relatively early.

glad to hear it went well...perhaps the start of an annual thing?  (or have they done it before?)

Sometimes though you have to give people what they need and not what they want.

Or less tongue in cheek what the organisers of that area themselves enjoy - otherwise it isn't organic and real - like any art you're creating. Hence why you can't pick bits of it up and drop it next to the Beat Hotel or whereever as then the creators of that area would just say stuff it and not want to do it anymore.

Places like the Rocket Lounge could do with being half their current size again, at least (if not double). What acts I tried to catch there were packed out and the noise bleed from other adjacent areas meant you could not hear them.

Not being a fan of crowds (I get panic attacks in them, I kno, I'm a Glutton for punishment!) I tend to avoid the late night area after the main stages close. Lots of weird and wonderful stuff in the greenfields though (and fast becoming a fan of Toad Hall).

The south east corner is in the south east scorner because it's the only place where they can turn the volume up late at night.

And even then, only because the neighbouring landowners consent to it being so loud.

With doubts over the future usage of some of that land, is there any guarantee that the noise limits stay the same?

interesting, but if the average age of the people attending the SE corner is majority early 20's...are there early 20 somethings involved with the production of the SE area to reflect that demographic / the future demographic of that area?

    • I was so lucky yesterday, disappointed of course not to see Massive Attack, but gorgeous sets from Blood Orange, Caroline, Panda Bear, and Father John Misty was a real highlight. The half of Geese i saw was mint too.   I wanted to see overmono but couldnt hack it anymore.   But now, its Friday, I'm In Love
