Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon: ‘I’ve always refused to play Glastonbury’

”A 21st-century rock and roll epitaph if ever there were one. But Le Bon and the lads have no plans to ease up. For now they are planning 2024, which will include appearances at festivals – although (appallingly!) not the only festival that matters: Glastonbury.

“I believe they have our telephone number, we haven’t changed it” quips Rhodes. Le Bon elaborates that they have been approached to play but the offer has never been quite right: “3pm in the Disco Tent isn’t really where we see ourselves.”

“A long time ago I vowed I would never set foot in Glastonbury unless it was on the Pyramid Stage at a decent hour of the night,” he says. “So although I’ve been asked to camp, to glamp and invited to fly in and out by helicopter, I’ve always refused on principle.”

It does seem to be a glaring omission, but the Rolling Stones, whose debut album came out in 1964, waited half a century to get the call, in 2013. All the same it would be an outrage if Duran Duran’s Wild Boys were kept waiting much longer.”

So having gone through the thread and collating all the names mentioned (bar a couple of joke suggestions), and excluding any that started in the 90s onwards (because obviously):

Definitely viable:
- Shania Twain - 3 month gap between Vegas runs.
- Stevie Nicks - Extensive US tour ends in March, European dates not announced yet.

Status unknown:
- Alanis Morissette - Last currently scheduled date is November.
- Annie Lennox - Has started to do bits and pieces recently after being inactive.
- Cher - New album of Christmas songs, but no scheduled dates.
- Chaka Khan - Last currently scheduled date is January.
- Cyndi Lauper - Active recently but nothing currently scheduled.
- Dionne Warwick - Last currently scheduled date is February.
- Gloria Gaynor - Last currently scheduled date is November.
- Grace Jones - Active recently but nothing currently scheduled.
- Joan Armatrading - Active recently but nothing currently scheduled.
- Joni Mitchell - Did her first show in forever last year, then another this year. Huge question over logistics.
- Patti Smith - Last currently scheduled date is December.

Ruled out or extremely unlikely:
- Carly Simon - Last show was 2018.
- Carole King - Rarely appears for more than a song or two, and nothing since January 2022.
- Celine Dion - Cancelled an extensive 2023/24 world tour for health reasons.
- Gladys Knight - Not available due to other dates.
- Kate Bush - No chance whatsoever.
- Tracy Chapman - Last show was 2009.

Joni Mitchell. I think that's the phone call, and I'd be there above anything else.

Certainly would be the one I'd most like to see (and to be honest probably the most "it's now or never" one out there). But got to feel it's a long shot. Was borderline whether I put her into the "very unlikely" group or not.

Oh I completely agree. It really feels like one we may miss out on, which is such a shame.

By far and away the best option, but as I keep getting told, she won't do it for the money on offer.

Would also be far better as a WH headliner.

I’d agree with that. She’s headlined a lot of medium sized festivals and so might not feel especially special as the legend. I suspect that she would go down very well on West Holts.

Yes she's def more suited to West Holts.

I'm not sure the picnic blanket lot could name any songs by Grace Jones. Although they'd bop along to the mostly covers set: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/grace-jones/2023/lulworth-castle-east-lulworth-england-3a4cd7b.html

like all these aging acts, Glastonbury didn't see fit to book them at their peak. there's probably a reason why?

Would also have 95% of the field not knowing what any of her set is. Would still be good...because she is good, but no way for Legend. WH all the way.

Oi! Stop it! Let us dream.

What an hour that would be. Just her and a piano. Total acoustic set. Just the hits. Her last ever swan song. It'd be a bigger happening than Reg,

She's as likely as Kate Bush...

Yes and slightly yes.
