Is this year particularly poor for people who like Guitar music?

Feels like a lot of pop and dance really.

Theres a lot of everything......

It's well balanced - of the top of my head here is a list of Guitar music . Probably 50 or so more acts you could include if you made a proper list

GnR, Manic Street Preachers, Shame, Murder Capital, Viagra Boys, Big Joanie, Skindred, Black Country New Road, The Dammed, Nova Twins, Royal Blood, Arctic Monkeys, Blondie, Elvana, Holy Moly & The Crackers, Showhawk Duo,  Skindred, Prima Queen, Plantfood????

You've forgotten the best guitarist at the festival..

I understand the point on “guitar” music. I can see how it feels like we’ve a lot of areas that focus solely on electronic music (Glade, Arcadia, Block 9, Silver Hayes, etc.) of which many have multiple smaller stages but still have dedicated posters with a huge amount of names. The larger stages such as The Park, West Holts and Other, may be more balanced but still come with a mix.

It all feeds in to the larger trend in modern day music I think. Quite simply, there’s far less “bands” around now than there was 10/20/30 years ago.

I'd say I'd be coming from a similar position music wise re the line up. Going back even a little further, I was hoping for a James, Suede, Pulp (still hoping), Doves etc, bands of my youth.

Guitar wise, from the lineup, bands I wouldn't really have know much about but am really excited to see would be Viagra Boys (think this gig will be immense), Shame, Working Men's Club, Murder Capital. I've seen Wunderhorse recently and they are wunderbar.

Outside of 2 of the headliners, the likes Slowdive, Manics, QotSA, The War on Drugs, Royal Blood...now I'm thinking there's too much and I'll most likely miss a fair chunk of the listed bands 🙂

Yeah you are right there are a loads. The Murder Capital are fantastic live so I’d highly recommend that and they have confirmed they are at 1.30 on the Saturday so should hopefully be clash free.I don’t know Wunderhorse so will check them out.

Quote

“The majority of young people aren’t excited by band music in the traditional sense: groups of lads with guitars."

It ain't just young people.

The vast majority of contemporary guitar bands are dull.

Even Glade stage has bands on - they don't normally!

In truth, it’s all anecdotal at the moment.

It would be fantastic if we had genres tagged against each act somewhere.

With less than a month to go, it’s always a hard task getting through the posters ahead of the festival

Made a bit easier once you can view via a clashfinder though 🙂

True… would love a bit more time though. The 3 weeks prior to the festival is usually spent trying to get ahead of myself in work knowing the following week or 2 will be a write off.

Bands are also way more expensive to book than DJ's.

  1. There are usually more members
  2. The sound is more complicated (multiple instruments needing mixed)
  3. Changeovers are more complicated

IMO festivals try to save money by putting on more DJ's. Luckily its also the general trend in whats popular.
