I'm not going to comment on this nonsense on Twitter, because I don't want to drive engagement, but is this woman really so stupid?

Has she no idea how many deaths there were every day at the peak? Roughly 1200 every day. So 10,000 deaths is just over one week's worth of deaths. If we hadn't locked down does it not occur to her that slightly more than 10,000 lives would have been lost, given that was seven weeks ago? Granted the maths is a bit more complex than that, but it sure looks to me that the combination of vaccines+Lockdowns has saved way more than 10k lives.

It's quite possible for both to be true. This is what she's driven me to - defending Johnson and Mancock.

Ah you’ve thought about it too much which means you’re way ahead of her.

People like Julia have managed to turn the opinions of what an ignored old fart grandad says into content that people lap up. Her career is based on saying things that she drops / forgets about immediately. A history of notoriously bad takes broadcast to people with low critical thinking skills.

She’s basically filled the void left by Katie Hopkins hasn’t she.

John Edmunds spreading fear on Peston again

EDIT: forgot the obligatory boffin insult...BOFFIN.

Edmunds really is the worse. He literally said 3 months ago the Kent variant was vaccine escape, without saying why. A disgusting human being.

Most of what he said was just waffling and what he “thought” rather than any usual information, facts or indeed anything worth listening to.

Some of these scientists love their 15 minutes of fame far too much.

Anyone know why they haven't? They seem to be such an organized and obedient nation, I'm amazed they weren't at the forefront.

Same as many other countries. Slow to approve and now supply issues. Read that the slow approval was to try an counter vaccine skepticism by being seen to be so thorough, which may work, but now they don't have any to jab with.

Hi old son, I am quite confident/relaxed that it won't go pear shaped again here, I think Boris and Co have learnt from their massive mistakes of past waves and won't let that happen again. They will put the brakes on now as soon as they see the numbers going the wrong way. And we have such a high level of people vaccinated, even if mostly just one dose so far, and the population is very willing to be jabbed, so in a few weeks time, and fingers crossed no nasty new  variants then we will be OK this summer. I think people here are now on the whole quite sensible/careful as lockdown rules begins easing. Yeah there will be some idiots but the vast majority are sensible and know what is needed.

Now go and enjoy your holiday old son...

Not yet old son. Grandkids today and tomo till 12 then off

I can see the logic there to be honest but it might end up working the other way sadly.

One for @Toilet Duck

Can we really have any confidence in statements like these? Covid levels are so low in Israel how can we be sure its vaccine effect and not just the case of there being such a small chance of Somone coming into contact with Covid?

The fact that there's a small chance of coming into contact with someone with COVID is a function of the vaccination programme! (NPI-mediated suppression is also part of it, especially until you get enough people protected by the vaccines...I've seen this described as a Swiss cheese defence...lots of layers, all with holes in them but as long as the holes don't line up, then you can protect from infection, some of the layers involve collective responsibility, some involve personal). Basically, the effectiveness of the vaccines in preventing infection further suppresses the spread (which is better than we hoped for!). The UK has the lowest infection rate in Europe. We've been right beside you on the strictest lockdown table since Christmas (and we are only a couple of places behind you in the lowest infection rate in Europe league at the moment), but the main difference is where you are in your vaccination programme, so you have over 5x fewer cases per million people than we currently do, and that's the vaccines as our lockdowns were almost identical (and were for a similar period with a similarly timed wave of infection). Eventually there is a critical mass of people vaccinated and circulating virus levels will drop significantly. Based on the UK vaccination plan, most felt this would be sometime between Easter and Early summer. I don't see a whole lot that changes that...once you start getting the younger cohort vaccinated in large numbers, I'd expect you will see pretty much the same thing as Israel. Head to head, in real world use, all the vaccines seem to perform more or less the same (apart from the inactivated Sinovac one, but that's comparing apples to oranges, as opposed to a Cox's to a Braeburn) so the fact the ye have more OX/AZ in arms than Pfizer shouldn't make much difference (based on the data so far from PHE and others). All the signs are good, but it takes a little bit longer to see the impact of each step on the roadmap since hospitalisation and ICU numbers are what you need to watch out for now (plus B117 infection is a bit different to original variant, it takes longer to shift and we don't know how long people are infectious for with this one, so time between steps is a bit longer this time around). I still think by summer we'll be in a far better place (and it's already better...better after Easter, much better by summer was most expert predictions...hasn't changed!).

He's the worse after a few months ago when he said "the vaccines don't work against the Bristol variant " with no evidence backing it. Hopefully he disappers from public view asap

sure he didn't use the word "might", or "could", or "may"?

Do we know efficacy of vaccines against bristol variant? Is this the eek one? Don't think it's spread much has it?

Tbh, if you aren't sure about it, you shouldn't be on national TV. When I talk about doom mongering nerds, he's the main culprit.

BBC News - Covid: 82% of positive rapid tests 'were correct'
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-56750460

So that was 18% false positives? And this being presented as a good news story ? WTF

And when you think they want to use these for travel and it could wreck your holiday! Not good....

False positives aren’t really the biggest issue with these tests, seeing as they’re all backed up with a pcr test now.

Id be more concerned about how many negatives were correct.
Not that it matters going forward, if they’re going to let everyone do their own at home and be allowed to socialise then it’s fairly simple just to scan the barcode and say it’s negative without taking a test at all.

Not Fake Sage.

Well, there is loads of uncertainty with this virus, whether it's aerosol transmission, asymptomatic transmission, forecasts of waves...it's all unknown...and we can all look back and say oh look the nerdy twat got it wrong...and I guess people will forever more...

    • Disclosure Day was fun.  It's very Spielberg but probably not an all time classic Spielberg. Nothing particularly original but it's well made, good performances (exceptional performance by Emily Blunt) and for a 2 hour plus blockbuster it flew by. Not everything worked, but I don't want to say why to avoid spoiling. Then again, it's not like there are too many shocks in this film.
