The solution to abandoned tents & waste?

Why dont they charge everyone with a tent an extra £30 to pitch the tent and then give them a ticket , if they can prove they have taken the tent down and home with them they get there £30 back , and if not because they to lazy then the land owner can keep each £30 which would work out quiet a lot and pay a group of people say £10 - 20 for each tent the take down and put away , that way some ppl who need some extra cash can volunteer to do this and make a bit extra bonus over the weekend , then also the land owner or whoever can now sell these good used tents on at boot fairs etc for even more money or donate them to charity.

Because a system like that would cost more to run and administer than it does to just pay to dispose of them.

Tents behind left behind is a societal issue and potentially a larger issue but it's not a problem for the festival any more as they have found an answer: ask people to take them home and pay people to dispose of the rest.

Correct. Very few take our impending doom seriously, there's a bad "heads in the sand" attitude and it's going to be the death of us all. Chickens rapidly on their way to the roost.

Unworkable, sadly, but a lovely and positive first post. Maybe have a drone following everyone at a festival and if they leave their tent without packing it up a la Shambala, they get put in a barrel and thrown into the sea. Same as anyone who throws litter out of a car window.

Yeah Shambala is what 20K or something and a comparatively socially and environmentally conscious crowd. Wonder what its like for Bearded and BD, tho these seem to be rapidly becoming more campervans etc than tent events.

Somewhere between 15 and 18k as far as i know. Never been to Bearded, but BD still seems to have a fair few abandoned.

The reason BD is becoming more camper van is because their demographic is aging ex punks, bikers and hippies, which is why there's about a million camp chairs in the arenas, and why it's a fairly dull affair.

They added 2 extra camper van fields this year.

Same with Bearded - practically a sister festival to BD now. When you're old enough and have saved enough to upgrade from tent to campervan you do I guess, plus easier with kids.

Nice idea however If you weren't arsed about leaving your £19.99 Tesco tent are you actually going to do so for an extra £30 charge. At some festivals this could even encourage crime, take someone else's tent down on the Sunday, get the money and then sell the tent on.

There's actually a good chance it'd make it worse even if it could be done. Because as soon as you do a system like this people go "okay, I can leave my tent for £30, it's worth it."

If people are given a way to pay for it, they will stop seeing it as wrong, and start seeing it as a benefit they can buy. I think this is covered in the original Freakonomics book.

I went in 2021 having just turned 40....I definitely felt young there which is the first time that's happened in a very long time at a music festival!

and yes, the amount of camping chairs in the arenas/outside tents was really really annoying.

Blacklist people who leave their tents for a year.

The thing with glasto is so few people leave them (less than 1% right?) that an eco bond type scheme would lose money as pretty much everyone's deposit would be returned. It would make somewhere like r&l a killing

Fair. I merged two ideas into one there to be honest.

Eco bonds so a bin bag of rubbish to get it back / similar like boomtown does and then anyone who doesn't give their bin bag in gets blacklisted. Bit difficult though i guess as some people may have to dash off early and their mates agree to clean. Perhaps done campsite by campsite instead.

Or maybe someone comes about the campsites in the morning and everyone has to checkout with a volunteer to get their registrations whitelisted for next year. Even just the ecobonds without blacklisting wouldn't hurt still.

Just re-register. 

And the idea is to get people to take their stuff with them, not encourage people to produce a black bag full of rubbish. A system that requires you hand in a bag of rubbish punishes people who are not creating rubbish in the first place.

Theres tent donation areas for camping ones in the u.s because they get donated for homeless people. But since that sort of thing pretty much is unheard of over there its pointless. I mean they should/could charge to camp at glasto anyway to get the income. Who is going to get upset if they ask £20 extra a ticket holder. The eavii wont mind the millions it would generate. They have to get around to that sort of thing anyway. Wonder how much extra Reading had to fork over after that madness that was left last weekend for cleanup crews.

They do charge for camping. Its in the ticket price.

Have you been to glasto? It's not like we could all find other accommodation in Pilton if we didn't want to camp 😂

Also, they have had tent donation points, but the tents being dumped are the cheap shit ones that'll leak in mild drizzle - might not be a problem in California but not much good for homeless people here (or refugees in Calais, which I think is where they were sending them).

how would you make sure you are with your friends, 

 

 

I mean , there are so many of us that go. every year there are new people who are friends of friends . they don't know where they are camping and end up with us, as they may know someone who is with us. They wouldn't know this when they booked. I would not have met most of my festival friends if you had to pre book tent and location. 

 

pre booking just ruins it , who says who gets the best pitch, do better pitches cost more money? who should someone pay more to campo in a better field. I ended up camping where we camp now by total accident one year. Now we always go back .

It can be done, but it's going to take many years.

Somehow we need a massive change in the attitude of the punters.

Shambala has had a grand total of zero tents left over the last two events, I believe it was 6 the year before.

Not only that but the fields are more or less spotless, with the vast majority clearing up their campsite before leaving.

I believe it's the same at Womad.
