Radiohead are performing UK gigs in a small venue. Any reasons why they couldn't also play a small festival venue? Discuss.

It's quite a common occurrence for big bands to do an intimate tour now and again. It's practically unheard of (secret sets aside) for big bands to play small festival venues, isn't it?

If you mean a small festival, nothing; if you mean a small venue at G, horrendous overcrowding and possible deaths. Even the secretest of secret shows would get dangerous once they started playing.

honestly, i would be a bit worried for my safety if they play anywhere but the pyramid or other stage.

my friends was there in 2011 at the park, almost fainted due to a lack of oxygen in a stampede. was just too crowded.

i'm pretty sure the festival is aware of what happened last time.

They can fuck off with just three London shows. They either better announce some shows up north or play Glastonbury. Sick of your shit Radiohead. Stop makin it so hard to be a fan of yours!

Because venues sell out and restrict the number of people allowed in - a small festival venue wouldn't be able to restrict people at first and it would be fucking mental, like the Park in 2011 (and that wasn't even a billed set)

wasnt the health and safety issues at the park stage something which meant they stopped having secret sets like that?

i do think opening the second stage is most likely. can fit more people in that field

Depending who they are up against, it could prove an interesting excecise in crowd management. If they played against Adele (assuming she plays) that woudl split the crowd for sure, but what would the split be - that's the tricky part.

Interesting dates. I may try to get tickets for the New York gig - not because I'm a crazy fan, but because my other half is moving to that area for a while and I could tie in a gig whilst I'm there. Why not Radiohead? I can't see me getting tickets for Roundhouse.

I can't see them playing a late set but what about multiple sets across the weekend? Some in smaller venues with a larger stage later on? Big gap in June though.

It could happen in the naughty corner in the wee hours.  There's already a traffic system in place to stop utter bedlam.

I do not want this though.

This would tie in with comments Emily made recently in an interview alluding to secret sets in the later hours and in the farther reaches of the site, or something along those lines

Could you imagine the crush in John peel if that happened, I would imagine the site would need to have security to block the area of if it got too full.

Radiohead. Hell stage 1am-3am.

Even with the systems in place, that would be fucking horrific.

But in its new area...? Is it being moved for reasons other than just to shake things up - to provide a bigger capacity in the immediate area so they can put on bigger acts maybe?

I just presumed that it would increase the capacity slightly

I think they could do a set on Shangri-Hell, and get away with it. But it would have to be as Special Guests at the same time as the main stage headliners are playing

To me anyway, it is absurd to think they could do anything other than headline.

Its dangerous! Remember the reason they stopped the secret gigs in the Park was because of Radiohead. People trampling all through the campsites to get in and out of there.

So now they're going to put them in Shangri La? Which is already a fucking disaster logistically? Or in the Peel? So 50,000 people can charge like Wildebeest through Michaels Mead, Lower Mead and Oxylers?

 This thread just keeps on giving. Love it.

    • To be fair @Superscally barely mentions the running thing. Very quiet about it 😘
    • I guess we'll just have to wait until videos of the shows go up, but the fact that the standing is also greyed out still suggests to me that those sections just sold out out before the others and a blue block just be like 3 tickets left, it's still not concrete proof they never went on sale and if they were never on sale why would they not make it even, if 414 wasn't on sale then you'd think 409 wouldn't be either
    • Selfish, but I've done the 2 days I'm there.. i'll try to do the rest through the day but might get beaten to it as it's editable....    https://clashfinder.com/s/ape2026/
    • I don’t think the festival automatically ‘need’ to have a female headliner if you have strong female headliners on the Other Stage (which I reckon will be Rosalia and Phoebe Bridgers), perhaps a female legend (praying for Annie, will take Cher), and a few female/mix gendered subs on the Pyramid (maybe London Grammar, The xx). From what I’ve seen of Sabrina, her team prioritises the pay day and I think she will be doing Wembley over Glasto weekend.   One thing I’ve noticed is a lot of the suggestions would be first time headliners and I can’t work out when the last time was that the festival had three artists top the bill that hadn’t topped it before? It seems to be something they like to do to make sure they have a ‘safe’ headliner that will land well with the masses. Plenty of names in that hat that could step back up next summer and should/could be about: Billie Eilish, Adele, Foo Fighters, The Cure, Radiohead, U2…hell, if Beyoncé is really planning to release a ‘rock n roll’ album to complete her Renaissance trilogy, Glastonbury would be a great place to ‘kick off’ that campaign for her.   And there’s always the Rihanna rumour. Her husband (I think) said this week she’s in the studio.
    • And all (or all but one) of the secret sets repeats though?
