Can't seeing him pulling anywhere close to the crowd Dolly and others have got. Might just be me but doesn't have the kitsch/ironic/retro pull of others. This year Dolly was a 'be there' point of the festival (as shown by the huge crowd); think Richie will be a "well if he's not clashing with anything....."

He's got a substantial 80's based back catalogue but I'm not convinced it's really stood the test of time. The legend slot works particularly well if (1) the songs last through the generations (Brian Wilson / Dolly) or (2) are being covered / reworked by current artists

Lionel has a just a single 'number one' UK hit and the last 20 top entry was 10 years ago. He'll draw a fair crowd of older festival goers but he'll need to be bookended by some strong current acts to draw a big crowd that spans the glastonbury age groups.

Well, assuming he goes for the 'greatest hits' approach, there's at least 10 songs there that 90% of the audience will know, so with a couple of lesser-known ones and a bit of banter, he's got the makings of a damn good afternoon set!

Of those, I'd only say 'Dancing.....' and 'All Night Long' are proper singalong, 'good time' songs. I'd find most of the rest a bit of downer. on a sunday afternoon/evening ......legends slot should be the moment you drag your tired, knackered, muddy, dead body into one more night of energy..

Perfect fit - his sexist and misogynist videos and turgid musical output in the 80s inspired an army of inventive, independent-thinking musicians, and yet by managing to persuade millions of mugs to by his records 20+ years ago and simply staying active he is now revered as a 'legend'. The long-forgotten indie artists who were inspired to make music in order to rally against this sort of shit should be the ones hailed as legends, but this is just another in an increasingly long line of performers who were the antithesis of what creative and challenging independent music was back in the 80s/90s being welcomed by a crowd eager to tick another big name off a list.

I was thinking of those, plus Running with the night, Still and Stuck on you. There's definitely a mix of party songs and ballads, but I think that's a good way to head into a Sunday evening. I guess it's a different way of looking at the same thing. What some might consider a downer, I would see as a chance to rest my legs in between the party tunes.

just you, there's been a huge ironic/kitch thing going on with Lionel Richie over the last few years.

maybe he won't pull quite as big a crowd as Dolly Parton, but he'll pull a much bigger crowd than most of the "legend" performers of recent years.
