Non metal head here... and I funking loved it... visually was awesome, songs had a good mix and the band themselves wanted to be there... always a plus for me!

Perfectly judged, no point playing a load of obscure album tracks to a crowd of predominantly non-metal fans who booked tickets without the knowledge you were playing, the managed to keep the heavy metal elements there but also by choosing some of the soft stuff show off some of there amazing musical talent.

I think the genre may have won over some new fans tonight, Metallica have always been a point of entry into metal music.

Not consciously a big fan but thought they were great. I knew more songs than I thought I did too. Their enthusiasm for being there was obvious too.

21month old went mad for One! Bouncing about the place and pregnant wife said there was major kicking going on throughout the set. Looks as if I have a pair on metalers on my hands. A most enjoyable gig from one who would not go to such gigs. More bands playing fests should hire sound engineers like Metallica have. They had the best sound I have heard on the Pyramid. Belting stuff. Dare I say I was more impressed with them then the Stones last year

As a very jaded Metallica fan (since '86) Ive seen them a dozen times or so. I am kinda numb to them now, but I watched it out of curiosity. I was incredibly impressed. An almost "parent-like" pride in how well they pulled it off. The set was perfectly balanced for a non fan crowd, a little bit of maudlin and schmaltz from James and Lars, but on the whole i thought they were fantastic. I havent watched a full metallica set for a few years now, and I just didnt want to switch it off. S&D at the end was fantastic. Bravo.

One thing struck me about 3 tracks in. It must be 25+ years since Metallica have stepped onto a stage with "tough crowd" nagging in the back of their minds.

I've been reliably informed that Eli Wallach (sorry if the spelling is wrong) died very, very recently. So it may be a tribute to him. Also (I've been informed) the film is "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" which might make reference to their saying that all music should be allowed at Glastonbury. The fox hunting I guess (and I mean guess) is a reference to the Facebook stuff about one of them hunting bears, Michael Eavis' not disagreeing with the badger cull, something completely different.

I'm beginning to realise that:

- I may be not sober

- I may be treating you lot as my glasto-friends

and having that level of conversation with you.

Nope, (well, yes in a way). Metallica always start with this (yes, it is Eli Wallach, who did indeed die recently, hence the dedication), but starting with the ecstasy of gold is how Metallica start every show, so no statement being made at that point…the cut to the fox hunting was Glasto-specific and made me laugh out loud (and was indeed a reference to the hunting hooha in the build up). Anyway, watching it again on TV now, they were simply awesome on the night, they really won the crowd over, but the end everybody to the back of the field was punching the air screaming seek and destroy! The crowd grew significantly when Pixies finished, and the lefthand side of the field was rammed. Despite being a massive Arcade Fire fan, they blew them away (Arcade Fire need to stop phoning in sets where I can predict every last thing they will do, vary it a bit, it must get boring even for them)…Anyway, had an absolute blast at Metallica on Saturday night...

I thought they were absolutely fantastic, shame they didn't/couldn't bring their usual pyro show though. Guessing that the amount of fuel they use for the fire would've been against the Glasto spirit?

I was wondering round site last night, watching all the big jets of fire at the SE corner, Arcadia, Cabaret field etc and thinking how Glastonbury like there fire haha.

The only slight underwhelming thing for me was the light show, maybe it was because I was tight in the gunt at the front. First time I've been there.

Thought it was very lacklustre.

Up until about 5pm I was going to watch mogwai after the pixies, but if truth be told, I couldn't be arsed, knackered after some very heavy nights, and thought sod it, let's watch Metallica. All reports says mogwai were very good, but Metallica were my act of the weekend, put on a great show and kept people there till the end

that's understandable, they normally have huge flamethrowers on either side of the stage shooting flames into the sky though. that would've been epic

I thought they absolutely smashed it. After Jack White's pretty hum-drum set which I was fractionally disappointed by, Metallica took things to an entirely different level. The sound was awesome, the professionalism second to none, and despite not knowing about half the set, I was blown away. Easily one of my very highlights.

Yeah I loved the fact they opened with Creeping Death, they could have easily gone 'Right, lets start with an openly accessible song to get people interested' but instead they opened with Creeping Death as if to say, if you don't like this then there's no point in staying.

I liked the black album as a kid, plus a few of their softer tracks - but otherwise not really a fan. I loved every minute of it.

Got dragged away just before master of puppets as my mates had been trying to get me to leave to go eslewhere (and i finally caved) - i wish i had stayed by myself. Epic stuff.

Found it all rather listenable. Thought they didn't have enough hits to carry a headline set (and that's a problem for anyone, metal or not). Bits of it sounded rather dated. All good fun and the band were very gracious with their speech at the end (and in the intro video) - something at their stage in their career they didn't have to do if they didn't want to. Good on everyone for taking a chance on something new, even if it was born out of a bit of desperation!
