They absolutely smashed it. The "object" that was overseeing the crowd though (thing attached to the pyramid, where the phoenix was last year) I thought looked alot like an engine, so was expecting a huge fireball when Fuel kicked in, alas Fuel never came and neither did the fire!

They were great though and the crowd where i was near the front were all well up for it, huge pit!

With a new manager they might - Brian Johnson has also said they're up for playing more festivals and they've also done it pre-Download without the excessive demands.

To be fair to them playing Download the stage set was immense and not the sort of thing you could hide behind a small curtain without obstructing other bands in the day

I thought the opening video was pretty funny but far, far too long

The video was good but I did think it dragged on a bit.

Given my earlier opposition to Metallica in this thread and forthright views that they were an unpopular choice that would get a small/dwindling crowd, it's only fair that I should come on here and admit that they did go down well.

I was nowhere near it cos I think they're shite/cheese, but have since flicked through the set on youtube and see that they got a decent crowd and gave a good performance. Nice comments from Lars at the end too.

Fair play to 'em and all those who enjoyed them.

I was wrong. :)

Was good enjoyed it, especially the opening video and For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Wish I had got closer with the proper fans now instead of chickening out and heading for the the sound desk. To many drugged up dikcheads around me spoilt it for me in the end in having to be fearful of what they was up to. (Especially when they got a fire flare out ugh..)

Still atmosphere seemed good in other parts of the site, and they put on one hell of a show. Seemed to genuinely mean something to them to.

I thought exactly the same all weekend. I've been left wondering if anyone else actually had fireworks from it? Definitely seemed to be some pyro for Fuel but think they ran out of time. Shame as it's actually one of my favourites.

I am almost 100% certain that if that was for Fuel by Metallica, there is no way they woukd of not cut Fuel out.

Something like that woukd of meant a hell of alot and cost loads to install. Wether they were late on stage or not, another song woukd of been cut for them to use it.

So did that not get used? Thought it was for that Fire tune by Kasabian?

Theres been no pyro at Metallica shows for the last few months. Even when they've played Fuel. The fire has been on the screens.

Just watching Master of Puppets again. The breakdown in the middle was my favourite part musically of this years festie.

I've been thinking that - it's ludicrous to speculate that any band would cut out one of their best known and most visually spectacular numbers!

Just watching this back on iplayer - truly epic and i just wish i'd persuaded my mates to stay for the entire set. Great to see such an engaged crowd throughout and a band who were so happy to play glastonbury. Whether they are to your taste or not it cannot be argued that they weren't a great success.

I was intending to stay for a bit ( seen Metallica a few times going back to And Justice For All tour ) then was going to head to The Park to see Mogwai.

But I was totally absorbed by em - they only seemed to be on for 10 minutes.

And what i enjoyed so much was the crowd around me. They were not metallers , but a typical crowd that you would see waiting a Pedestrian Gate B for the gates to open - just a total mish mash of festival goers. But for the whole set they were headbaning etc like a Motorhead gig from the early 80 's

So from someone who started watching gigs in 1982 with Saxon and AC/DC

To those around me on Saturday night that rocked to Metallica like their lives depended on it - We Salute You !

That was a big part of what made it special to me. The festival and people embracing a genre they hadn't really done so

before. Thought james and lars' speeches helped with this too. I'd not go and see them normally but i'd watch the likes of acdc headline the pyramid - if it means there is a wider range of potential headliners i think that's good for the festival.
