Not all alcohol free/low alcohol beer is made that way. 

Some is made by stopping the fermentation process.

Also how you remove it matters.

Second shout for Thatchers Zero, although since they’re not the official cider partner that seems unlikely. Is there any 0% cider on the farm?

Did the first 5 months of this year sober (enjoyed dry January so much it just snowballed!). Guinness 0 was always my go to, it has to be poured correctly but when it is, it’s fantastic! An ice cold bottle of Corona zero with a slice of lime in is also almost as good as the real thing. Couldn’t get on board with alcohol free cider/wine. Just felt like drinking apple/grape juice. Big fan of lucky saint too, although it used to be £7 a pint in the pub I drink in 😳. I would definitely have the odd pint of lucky saint/guinness 0 at the farm next year if they had it (ticket dependent 🤞🏼).

I’m probably in the minority as I don’t rate Guinness Zero. 

Leffe Blond 0.0 is a decent drop, don’t mind Corona as long as it has lime in it. 

I tend to add a bit of lemonade to the zero beers and make a top or shandy, I feel like the sweetness hides the fact it’s not a “real” beer. 
 

Has anyone tried the drinks like Trip? Are they any good or just a marketing con??

Yeah, other than being pleasant enough soft drinks they don't do anything. Not for me anyway. Same with the Impossibrew AF beers which are supposedly enhanced in some way. 

I haven't tried any of the Sentia drinks yet. They look intriguing but again, it's it just marketing nonsense.

i think the best 0% is the Guiness one - i've had it put in front of me a couple of times and genuinely not realised.

 

i went to a show at the Palladium in london a while back and asked for a Guiness - all they had was cans and they served it using the weird pressure pump machine thing, i wasnt really paying attention and when i was walkng away i was thinking - hang on, wasnt that the blue colour one he gave me.. isnt that 0%... i spent the whole first half until interval drinking it with every sip thinking is it, isnt it?

 

went back at interval to get another and to check what i got and it was just a normal Guiness.

 

not sure i'd want too many of those on the farm tho...

 

all the 0% lagers just taste all syrupy to me.

Cider wise, Sandford Orchard's Devon Red Zero is exceptionally good, sadly it's currently only available in bottles. They need to address this for festival season ideally.

A pal of mine has a cidery thats very local to me - Ascension Cider, if you see em anywhere give them a go! - and he does a couple of low/no alcohol, including the magnificent maple and apple 0% thats really dry and crisp, and by christ is it hard to think of a better thirst quencher on a hot day

Menabrea very difficult to find mind you 

I found Estrella Galicia zero absolutely vile and metallic tasting, no matter how cold.

I bet the Menabrea is amazing, will try and track down.

Forgot to mention this one.  Haven't tried any of their other offerings as this is the only one stocked in local Tesco, but it's a decent sip.  One of my standards to keep in cupboard along with Lazer Crush and Lucky Saint

Interesting that a (presumably) small producer does both alcoholic and AF. I wonder if it's easier with cider than beer to do AF. Only reason I say is that I used to live next door to a micro brewery and they kept trying but just couldn't get an AF they were happy with. No idea if they've cracked it yet or whether they gave up. I now live next door to another micro brewery and they've said outright they aren't going to bother because at their scale it's just not worth the extra work and cost

As i understand it very basically, apple juice is turned into cider by bunging in some yeast and letting it do its thing, burping out carbon dioxide and pooping alcohol out as it goes.

He 'waters' down the cider to its desired alcohol strength by mixing the fermented with the non-fermented - so a 7% headmelter can come down to a lovely light drinkable 3% very easily. Some of yer less scrupulous cideries water down with, well, water. Cheaper and quicker, but a less proper product. 

 

Beer is different in that they can use an insanely expensive dealcoholyser machine that removes the alcohol from the beer. Its like £400k though, and as such is only really used by big breweries. 

Smaller breweries instead tend to use yeast strains that dont make very much alcohol, nice and easy, or try and separate it out using some kind of torturous boiling and removing alcohol vapour method that makes everything taste like crap. So low alcohol beers - 2.5% table beers - tend to be much more flavourful and enjoyable than the 0.5%ers, which are a much harder thing to make if you dont have oodles of cash. 

that said, the Beak brewery Nolia is 0.5% and i'd blind taste test that alongside a lot of pales and expect it to win - its wonderful stuff! So its possible, its just a ballache (which is exactly what you said 😄)

I can highly recommend Mash Gang products. Good range and the only produce AF, they know what they are doing and winning awards. Chug IPA being my favourite and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Will be saving up many cans before the festival to take along.

I was at the Isle of Wight festival recently and by Saturday they had already run out of alcohol-free beer! At a lot of festivals this happens on the Sunday. Festival organizers obviously don't realize the demand for zero options.

I'm a fan of Leffe so picked up some of these for the football yesterday and definitely think its one of, if not the best AF alternatives I've tried.

The Heineken 0.0% is one of the weaker options in Bottles/Cans.

 

But when it's on draft it's fecking lovely.

 

Had an ice-cold draft of it in a beer garden the other day, went down like a granny on a frosty morning.

It varies. At IOW they had Moretti. 
The End of the Road has a nice draft called Clear Head, but they always run out early.

 

Agree with others that the Belgian ones are all good. And Guinness 0 is excellent.

Clear Head is lovely. Only ever had it in cans, draft would be amazing

 

Moretti isn't bad as mass market AF goes. A bit sweet but there are far worse offenders out there in that score.

Hmm never heard of Clear Head looked it up, looks quite a boutique small brewery?

I have some friends over from OZ at the moment and they have always been heavy drinkers but are currently off the alcohol ( since March) - they have been impressed with the range of non alcoholic options in pubs and restaurants and shops which they can’t get at home. We even found a non alcoholic bottle of fizz for £3.50 in Sainsburys which was quite drinkable! 
it will be interesting to see if there are more options next year. More younger people aren’t drinking alcohol these days so most pubs etc have to offer alternatives.
