Sound was the single released immediately after Sit Down in the 90s so got loads of airplay at the time. It's not stuck around as much as some other tracks but it has that "single after hit" thing going for it.

The first festival I ever went to was Reading in 1991, where James were headlining the Saturday. I vaguely remember watching them then, and definitely remember spending most of my food money on a James T-shirt afterwards, so belting out Sit Down on Sunday, the band still so vital and myself by then an increasingly knackered wreck but at least trying to keep up, felt a bit emotional. I bought a t-shirt afterwards. 

 

Definitely would have taken another half an hour - some great tracks went unplayed. And agree that the new album is excellent.

That was my 11th time seeing them. Dragged our whole group along and was glad to hear they all really enjoyed it. I did pre-warn them that there would be a good mix of new songs and old classics. For me, the day they stop making new music is probably when they'll pack it in so if it keeps them going, I'll take it.

 

Think Yummy was their 18th album which is madness.

Based on your user name, I share a similar emotional attachment to James (noting I like them regardless).  I thought it was a great set. My wife went to Shania but I wasn't missing James.  Found it emotional anyway but especially so thinking of a couple of Utd mates no longer with us who came to mind when Sit Down came on.

 

I strolled round to Pyramid after, collecting a pint en-route,  but couldn't get to my wife. So after watching Shania from the side for a bit walked round the perimeter path and went to Woodsies for Alvvays who were also excellent.

I was down front with my 9yo son, absolutely loved it. We'd seen them at the O2 on the Yummy tour the other week but from the seats as U14s not allowed to stand, so it was nice to get up close and personal. Also got on the telly! 

 

I think the two drummers things is great,   Debbie and Chloe Alper are both great additions to the line-up,  Yummy is a really good album.

They could have headlined Pyramid with the crowd they had. They're due another go on there after having their 1998 set cut short to show the footy. Primal Scream were also sh*t after them, and it was raining.

 

Also love Sound, first track on my 2nd fave James album.

There's an excellent interview with Tim Booth, focused on his book but with a lot of chat about James, their creative process, touring and so on, on the Rock n Roll Book Club Podcast, the second part of which came out today. I'd recommend them both if you're interested, but this one has a section about this year's Glastonbury and their previous experience of the festival (from 12min 45sec). In short, they had a bit of falling-out with Michael Eavis because they didn't play Sit Down in 2016, and they weren't very happy with this year's slot, but they'd come back again if they got the right offer - "They famously don't offer a lot of money ... I don't know, it depends what slot they offered. If it's a slot that shows respect then we'd take it I'm sure."

 

They've just had a No1 album, are selling out arenas, have a huge back catalogue - no reason why they shouldn't be headlining Other if you ask me.

We had seen them in Glasgow just prior to the festival and they were tremendous. Ideal band to transcend the age groups. Could easily have headlined the other or subbed the pyramid.
If I recollect back in 2016 they cut sit down from their set as the start was delayed due to the mud at the front of the stage. More wood chip had to be quickly brought it.  They went straight on to laid at the end as time was short.

Its funny isn't it, you can have so many different Glastonbury experiences. We did Shania then Avril, which was amazing and no regrets, but James, bit of Shania then Alvvays sounds excellent also and could've been my exact Sunday on a different day

There are some days at Glastonbury where it is hard to get it wrong.  Sunday was my quietest day this year and I still saw 6 really tremendous gigs that I will always remember fondly.

 

Before the festival people were a bit sniffy about the lineup, but honestly I just had runs of great gigs on all of the 3 main days, with Friday being one of the best days I've ever enjoyed at the festival and, having been a bit deflated and lacking in energy on the Thursday, completely turned my festival around into one of the best ever for me.

I love them but wife feels the same about Tim as you. Says there's just something she doesn't like about him. Conceited I think.

I can remember they headlined the second stage at Latitude in 2018 and he seemed really shirty about Solange headlining the main stage that night saying they'd had loads of hits compared to her 

I adore the band and he's very talented but I agree he does seem a bit pretentious at times
