Gonna also suggest that it's not that radical or unusual to be unfamiliar with the enormous hits of both Guns'n"Roses and Depeche Mode.

Chances are if you’ve got even a passing interest in music, or at least access to radio, you’d have heard Sweet Child Of Mine or Just Can’t Get Enough and be able to identify them.

Yeah, but there's a reasonable chance that some of their big hits may have passed you by entirely, even if it's unlikely you won't know any.

Particularly if you were born outside of the timeframe when both bands were at their peak, which could be argued was thirty years ago

No. And I can see on Spotify that I’m in the minority. I also listen to more music than most of my friends and certainly go to more live music than anyone I know. Maybe I’ve heard it before but I’m listening to it now (and, sorry to say, not really enjoying it) and there isn’t a scintilla of recognition.

Yeah sure. Going to 2 gigs a year which is 2 more gigs than your friends doesnt really count.

I mean Depeche is more of an LA band than they were ever a London band so its part of the musical fabric in this city. Just like Elton is much more fond of LA than he is of the Uk. And GnR is from LA. So why is there such a demand for artists from LA anyway. Thats 2 years in a row that 2 of the 3 headliners are from La lol.

You've missed the point. It was the pointing to Music For The Masses as if to say: " how on earth would I have heard GnR when I was listening to this"?

If you've ever been to Basildon or Watford, you'd see why Dave, Martin and Reg have that preference.

Maybe next year we'll continue the trend and get Rage Against The Machine, Dr Dre and RHCP...

I think you need to add of a certain age as well.

I don’t know, those songs came out well before my time but I certainly knew them without seeking them out. There’s probably an argument that Sweet Child Of Mine is one of the biggest rock songs of all time, I’m baffled by anyone who hasn’t heard it. I certainly haven’t ever gone out my way to listen to them but Welcome to the Jungle and Paradise City are also massive songs I knew.

Thinking of my kids, and people around them. Now I am sure they may have heard the tune  somewhere, but not sure they would know who they are by. Son came with me to Thor so would have heard tunes, but that means little on being able to name a song and band. They are Spotify and YouTube so no chance to probably get a casual listen from radio for example.  Radio is for old people

Music is a pretty broad church. I like to think I am pretty knowledgeable about music but every day Heardle from every era reminds me that the list of stuff I don't know is more than equal to that which I know. There are many hugely popular artists that I know nothing by and the small amounts of exposure I have had to them don't make me inclined to want to know them anymore.  It's ok for people to know and like different things. It's what Glastonbury encourages. They wouldn't have small tents in other areas of the festival if the main stages were all that was important.

    • Hilarious to describe this as suprising, for the guy who can't afford to go on holiday, the guy who goes on holiday is rich, for the guy who goes on holiday, the guy who gets 3 holidays a year is rich, for the guy who gets 3 holidays, the guy who stays in 5* hotels is rich, for the guy who stays in 5* hotels, the guy that flies business class is rich, for the guy who flies business class the guy with a private jet is rich etc..   I think one of the greens video's that they put out that went viral, Zacks description of "the rich" covered 12 people in the UK.
