Live gigs - Who you've seen were they good, bad etc.

I've been to three of the James dates on the current tour and although I've seen them a lot over the years they really are playing  at the top of their game at present. Absolutely spellbinding performances. And I have to big up Doves who despite missing a core member sounded and were brilliant.

The Burning Hell with Carsie Blanton at Birkenhead Future Yard last night. 

 

I'm not quite sure how you'd describe it, political whimsy maybe. They did 2 sets, the first one running through the album they've recently put out together, the second one taking it in turns and joining in on each other's songs. 

 

A fun night, great crowd (no chatter), a lovely way to spend a Sunday night.

Prodigy last night in Cardiff a cracking day out . Cardiff great with everything a short walk from station . Arena I thought was really good . Queues looked long for toilets and bar but moved fast . Not as much moshing as the rest of the tour but maybe cos it was a Sunday eve ? Stayed toward the back as I was happy coming away without damage 😂 5th time seeing them I think .

Very last minute trip to see Yungblud at Newcastle arena tonight. Absolute fantastic show front to back, Dom is an absolute entertainer and knows how to work a crowd. Never seen so much positive and happy energy from a crowd. Lovesick Lullaby, The Funeral, Loner and Ghosts were all bangers live and I loved how he brought along a string section for the orchestral songs of the new album. Him doing his cover of Changes and Zombie were two very emotional moments and he was very clearly overwhelmed by the former’s reception. The crowd work did drag on a bit at times and absolutely he could’ve fit 3-4 more songs in but he has so much charm and personality that it didn’t matter. I can absolutely see him as a Pyramid sub next year!
 

The Warning were also fantastic as the support. Been on my radar for a while and enjoyed their Lollapalooza South American shows so to see them live in person was worth the wait! All of them radiate charisma and they have a setlist primed full of bangers. A lot of Muse/QOTSA-esque riffs and breakdowns which I thoroughly enjoyed. Would not be surprised to see them at Download next year and would love to see them on Woodsies - they deserve to get bigger in the next few years! Overall, absolutely terrific evening of fun!

Back at Future Yard last night for Little Grandad and The Orchestra (for now).

 

Although they were the support, I was mainly there for Little Grandad. Hints of Wilco, nice harmonies with a bit of rockier stuff thrown in, I think these could go far.

 

The Orchestra (for now) gave us a noisy, kind of proggy, interesting sound. I liked it.

Managed to source a ticket for Paul Simon in the London Palladium, got hell of a run of gigs in a few weeks. Super Furry Animals in Cardiff on the Saturday, Sunday Emmylou Harris in the Royal Albert Hall, then Paul Simon on the Monday. Get Tuesday off then Christopher Cross in Bristol on the Wednesday. What weeks off are all about

I missed the original ticket sale but got lucky on Twickets the day before the gig. They do give that feeling that they could get big.

Did the Guest List at the Exchange in Bristol last Thursday which was great then took the ball and chain to Olivia Dean in Manchester on Saturday, not particularly my sort of thing but a good show all the same!

Jalen Ngonda at The Octagon in Sheffield. Hugely talented guy, phenomenal old school soul vocals. He was trying out a few songs off the forthcoming album, alongside  the old one. There was also a lovely interlude where he did a stunning solo rendition of Burt Bacharach/Dusty's The Look of Love. Warm up was Deptford Northern Soul Club (DJ)... suitable, but might have felt short-changed if I'd paid the full ticket price.

Highly unlikely...but if the could get Nine Inch Noize to recreate their Coachella set, they should throw a bag at them to bring that to The Other next year.

Wonderful gig tonight - Butler, Blake and Grant, at Crookes Social Club. A masterclass in song craft and musicianship. All 3 sang and played throughout...  lovely harmonies from Norman & James, and some great melodic riffs from Bernard. Consider "goth folk" to be a new and very pleasing genre! There was great camaraderie between them, and they  played tribute to the Leadmill (RIP) and expressed much affection for the quirky venue (burlesque, poetry and bowling activities). It was the last night of their current tour.

I’m well into the double digits seeing The  Prodigy these days. The first album I bought was Fat Of The Land on cassette and then when CDs took over, it was my first CD.

 

Dublin last night was absolutely epic. It felt like a step away from their shows of recent and back to their raving roots. Lots of Experience, Jilted Generation and even some B-Sides. Tunes I thought I’d never hear again live.

 

The energy was something else too, and then you remember the lads are touching 60 (and Carl Cox still banging it out at 63 - Oh yes, oh yes!).

 

And then the crowd - from those drawing pensions to those not yet old enough to buy a pint. Genuinely so cool to see a band still knocking it out in the same venue where I also first saw them as a teenager, so many years ago. A musical handshake of sorts.

 

Anyway, if you get a chance, defo worth catching them on their tour 🤘🏼🐜

Paul Simon at Liverpool Arena last night. 2 sets, one going through Seven Psalms, then coming back to play some of the bigger tunes and a few deep cuts.

 

Just sublime. I was worried that there might be a lot of chatter with it being a large venue and, particularly in the first set, a lot of it being quiet, but everyone was very respectful.

It was, though a mate picking one up for £86 quid and my son getting one for £55 yesterday stung a bit.

I was there too. Absolutely fantastic and very emotional. Never thought I'd see him so I was ecstatic to see the great man in his final shows.

 

Totally agree with how well respected it all was. It was a noticeably sound output than normal gigs which obviously helps P.S, and I liked that there was very little on the screens behind. It felt old school, beautiful, pure. 

 

Sound of Silence on his own at the end - wow.

 

Very pleased he played Julio, gutted to not hear Late in the Evening or Mother & Child Reunion but certainly can't grumble!

Tame impala at co op live last night.

Kevin on great form puts on a fantastic spectacle both sound and light . Haven't seen them since Glastonbury other stage headliner 2017 I think .

First time at co op even bigger than I expected not a fan of arenas but it's OK been to worse 😅
