So one of our local pubs has shut down till further notice due to one of the customers testing positive! They are now contacting all other customers and staff! We are a relatively small seaside town!!

Oh no ... u weren’t a customer then ?

That is pretty quiet, but not really surprising I guess. Is that your normal stomping ground then? Sort a beer out when I'm back in the office :D

Main question, obviously, is what did you go for?  Had to adjust now I've gone veggie, but my top ones in there were Nanny Outar's and Goat. The jerk chicken place also did rum with ting or their own homemade ginger beer; bloody lethal! Staggered out of there a couple of times

Deal! No, I’m in forest hill so a short train journey - where are you based?

fish wings and tings has gone! As a veggie, you’ll be pleased to hear What the pitta is still there. I went for the Argentinian steak place and there is a new Sri Lankan outlet (decent and they have veggie options)

That top one looks lovely. What is it? What's the green stuff? Chilli or pesto I'm guessing.

Argentinian steak with chimichurri sauce if I remember correctly.  It is bloody good!

Always good to have a mooch in there and see what's new.  Greek On The Street is always good bet, although you do get a bit stiffed if you go for the halloumi option in there; quantity is way lower than the equivalent meal with the chicken or pork.

Office is right up by West Croydon station, so only about 10 min walk from Boxpark. Sounds like a plan :)

The pubs had only been open 5 minutes when a group of older boys made fun of my pink bandana.

The establishments that had opened near my flat were rammo saturday and sunday. Lot of people just hugging each other outside Turtle Bay in fact. I'm gonna swerve them all unless my flat gets too hot over summer, then I'll go to the pubs near aston uni, as they'll be quiet.

Gosta Green?

Sack of Potatoes is still there??

Used to drink in there when I was a teenager... I’m approaching 40 now.

Yeah the old adage that the students went to Gosta and the lecturers went to the spuds isn't exactly true, with the latter actually being popular with people who get the bus into town through north brum and get off at the first opportunity for a pint. It's alright in there still, just not the empty summer cavern the gosta is.

The Bull remains the king of the fire station area.

Thought it looked like two different meats there.  I had to google the sauce. Chilli-ish then. Love the one step recipe instruction from the BBC :

Method

  1. Put the herbs, garlic, onion and chilli in a bowl. Pour the oil and vinegar in and add salt. Mix together.

Even I could follow that.

Argentinian. Sri Lankan. Apart from the expected I think the only other exotic food in this town is probably the one Nepalese place. We've probably only got that because of the local ex Gurkha population.

Was gifted some lovely Nepalese Meatballs one Monday at Glastonbury. From somewhere near the Pyramid iirc.

You know when you've lugged everything back to the car and gone back on site for one last wander/wonder and it's gone lunch time 'cause the car was bloody miles away and you're bloody starving 'cause you skipped breakfast to pack up and lug everything back to the car?

Think I've had some of my loveliest meals at that point in time. Even a bog standard hog roast can taste like nectar then.

Anyway, to stay on thread, I really want to go to a pub. Overwhelming urge. It's what I used to do in the evenings if I didn't have work the next day. Did it Saturday to kind of get it out of my system, but was and still am very conscious that it is unnecessary risk taking.

You are both correct (it had chorizo too, Mr Zigster). I went out and checked but the Greek place was closed sadly. If you ever go to Brixton this place is decent (there are two of them):

I would suggest that if you go to a pub garden you will likely be fine. I've no massive urge to go back (but then I only drink at weekends). Wife wants to go out for dinner Friday night so I've booked a table at a local pub meaning we can sit outside again.

I've stopped being a pub regular, partly as I just drink less and also down to location, proximity of friends that kind of thing.  But I feel like I'm more likely to head down to the village local at the moment just to get them some business.

Used to spend hours playing pool in the back room of The Bull. Being good at pool is a sign of a mis-spent youth.

Have to defend my local 'spoons in this aspect. They have probably the best zero tolerance/no idiocy policy in town. Instant permanent bans in most cases. None of this, "You can come back in a couple of weeks and apologise", that other places give, only to have the same people behave in the exact same manner nearly every time they have a drink.

Can feel like a safe space at times.

Not saying that there's never any trouble but if you cause aggro you ain't coming back in. Friend of mine's barred for being the friendly but annoying drunk that just won't leave you alone when asked nicely. Another one for, ahem, complimenting a barmaid in an inappropriate manner.

True, it's still full of brainwashed brexit believers but this is a 62% leave town and it's difficult to avoid them anywhere.

As someone who swerved them pre-pandemic for Brexit-related reasons I'm in two minds about that myself. That Haunted Worzel Gummidge guy they have is clearly a c**t of the highest order, but the staff also need to earn a living.  I think some of them have specifically asked that people don't boycott them just because they disagree with or dislike the Reanimated Cadaver of Jeremy Clarkson that runs the company.

If everyone goes to different pubs then those pubs will need more staff and people who work at Wetherspoons can work for someone who is less of a monster! I would never go to a pub run by a person with known bad ethics who treats his staff like shite to support his staff. If they can't see the problem with that I reckon they have Stockholm syndrome (and the fact they have something so European will probably make him hate them more!)

I was once manhandled out of a spoons because someone had said it was me that lobbed a glass at the door /door staff from the dance floor ... now if anyone had actually thought about it ... to acomblish this feat I must have been some amazing target shooter ... it wasn’t me by the way !!

A Wetherspoons with a dancefloor?

Yep can’t remember if it was Lloyd’s then but don’t think so .... I wouldn’t have been too suprised if I was being removed for shocking dance moves ... but throwing a pint was slightly out of character !!

Sad story all 'round this:

A mature student mate of mine threw a pint glass in a bar while pissed up one night. Ruined his life at the time it did. Possibly permanently ruined the young girls life who got glass in her eye.

Cue criminal record. Cue kicked out of uni losing promising academic future (it was a uni bar iirc). He was already a borderline alcoholic and he just spiralled downwards. Cue dumped by girlfriend.

Last I saw of him was about two terms after that, when he was being walked away by the police for trying to enter one of the colleges whilst drunk, carrying a knife, wanting to speak to his ex .

And this was a really, really intelligent bloke otherwise.

The demon drink indeed.

We visited the town yesterday and didn't see one open . Like the social distance car restrictions into the town. The Tor was packed!

We were there on Saturday....mostly all closed as you say, including the King Arthur, but the 'Who' A Thought It' along from Knight's chippy was open and serving at their outside tables.  Seemed quite busy.
