This- so many more shops are open this time round. Both my parents and sister were at home last lockdown. Now they’re all in. But what else are they supposed to do? I don’t even begrudge the businesses massively. I’d do the same in their situation.

Tbf, anyone who attended a Christmas gathering will know by now whether any covid cases emerged from them gathering or not. So they can answer whether or not it was worth it.

 

Work colleague of mine tested positive for the second time today. She had an asymptomatic case back in June and now has mild symptoms. So perhaps the antibodies from OG-COVID don’t protect well against the new SuperCovid. Although it might be because she was asymptomatic first time round. Poor lass is the first person I’ve known to get it twice.

It’s these old-school Tory bosses who don’t believe in the virus (even now!)/are unwilling to trust their staff. The government should be coming down hard on them but it’s their core base and Boris has enough issues with the pure evil backbenchers.

Yep. I spent the day with my mum, my daughter & my brother. My mum is now shielding again so I won't see her again until March at the earliest. My daughter lost her Mum at xmas a few years ago so it was important I spent time with her.

We were all careful in the run up to xmas day & were pretty much socially distanced on the day. None of us caught it from spending the day together.

So, yeah - absolutely no regrets whatsoever!

Hopefully we'll have secure production lines of them by then and can give some of the excess to other countries that need them- even if you're not feeling altruistic, it's in our own interest not to have widespread virus in other countries, running amok and increasing the chances of mutation- we really do need a global response.

We will. She also makes a point about not being comparable in terms of rollout to countries like Israel and that we shouldn't be judged on such comparisons.

Spot on. It's a worldwide problem, we can't act alone or exist alone in the long term. Widespread control is essential. We'll never eradicate it but we can keep on top of it once the majority of people are vaccinated.

Yeah, mentally I really needed it. And everyone in our family had been really cautious throughout the year and in a fortunate position where everyone who worked had been working from home so as I expected no transmission of Covid happened due to us.

I thought that rules should have been stricter in the run up to Christmas and still do though. Why the fuck were we having crowds at football games for example?

Have summarised Pagel's recommendations to get out of lockdown:

• Make workplaces as safe as possible, both through regulation and govt grants to improve e.g. ventilation. Workspaces include kitchens, factories, warehouses, offices... 
• Support isolation: pay a decent wage to isolate, offer accommodation outside the home, help with caring responsibilities, communicate symptoms & need for isolation. 
• Know who is getting vaccinated - and who isn't. If uptake is lower in deprived communities where many key workers live then we are leaving those most as risk unprotected.
• A plan to vaccinate whole population after most vulnerable groups as soon as possible. First, to prevent illness (and Long covid) & second, to deny covid chances to mutate further and potentially evade the vaccine.
• Control our borders to prevent continual reseeding of local outbreaks *and* dangerous new strains from gaining a foothold.
