Avalon

I can't think of one time in over 10 years at Glastonbury that I have consciously made the effort to go to the Avalon Stage. This year there will likely be a couple of visits. A couple of questions:

* How big is the Avalon Stage compared to John Peel? I really can't remember much about it.

* Is it big enough to handle Frank Turner as a headliner? I saw him on the Other Stage a couple of years ago and the crowd was large. Admittedly that was around lunchtime when there was not much competition, but I can see plenty of people choosing Frank over Stomzy, Tame Impala and Interpol. I had him down as as a John Peel headliner or Sunday early evening.

* Is it me or has Avalon upped its game this year? Jade Bird for one I thought was a shoe-in for an early evening JP slot (which is generally when you tend to get the biggest JP crowds btw), is Avalon moving into JP territory?

Avalon is much smaller than John Peel.

1) A lot smaller

2) Hmmm....get there early

3) There's always some surprises on Avalon. Great stage, great vibe, acts generally excellent. Often sacked off the main headiners in years past to go and see a band there (Peatbog Faeries were a RIOT!)

I'd say Avalon is about a fifth of the size of John Peel. If they continue creating line ups like they are they might need a bigger tent.

I really wish I could be at Avalon for The Cat Empire (with Ibibio before no less) but no chances against the Chems. 

This is the most interest I've had in the area in the years I've been going. So much good stuff on their lineup.

Yes I thought the line up was amazing although sadly a lot of the stuff I was most interested in does seem to be clashing with other stuff. Not sure which way I'll turn just yet.

I would like to get to Frank T but will be at the Park for Michael K beforehand. Is best route to Avalon via the track through Pennards? The 3000 capacity is worrying though!

Down Pennards and Railway track all away along probably quickest, yes

It'll need to change this year, with there being new sizes for Sonic, Stonebridge (and I'm sure at least one other)

I can't see it moving into John Peel tent territory, in my mind it's still something quite separate, and I'm surprised it's as much as 30% the size of JP, it feels much smaller. 

Typically there's only a couple of acts per festival where there's a sizeable over-spill outside the tent, judging by the comments on here it'll be a struggle for the whole Avalon area to cope on Friday night. I'd guess to be inside the tent you'd have to be there at least 30 mins before the start.

Probably best, if you wish to discover the Avalon area, to make a separate visit as well.

The different stages of glastonbury represent the different stages of your life, think the full life cycle is:

 

John peel---> Other ---> Pyramid ---> Park ---> West Holts ---> Avalon ---> Acoustic

 

Wasn't sure where to put Glade, Silver Hayes and SE corner though! Maybe between Pyramid and Park...

Swap W Holts and Park.  Maybe even swap Other and John Peel with the amount of pop that's on there.
