Canned beers

What do people recommend? Needs to be in a can (obviously, or maybe a minikeg/polypin), taste alright when not been in a fridge, and preferably, not cost the earth.

Real ale wise, I'm a big fan of cans of Tribute. 4.2%, still tastes fine when it's been in your bag for a while, and although not the cheapest ale, isn't too costly. If you're in or around Cornwall, you may be able to get cans of it fairly cheaply in your local supermarket/offy. If not you can get it delivered from the brewery.

We've also taken polypins of Doom Bar in the past to keep at base camp. Survives the sunshine surprisingly well, and makes a fine breakfast drink!

With 'craft beers', in previous years it's been more difficult to get them in cans rather than bottles, but they're increasingly available in the familiar cylindrical metal container. My picks for last year, based on taste when warm and affordability, were:

  • Brewdog Dead Pony - 3.8% APA so perfect session strength, great citrussy taste (even when warm), and cheap for a craft beer - now £5.46 for 4 in Morrisons
  • Thwaites Crafty Dan 13 Guns - 5.5% American IPA, more classic tasting hoppyness, tastes good away from the fridge and again good value - 4 for £6 in Morrisons
  • Beavertown Bloody 'Ell - 7.2% Blood Orange IPA, delicious orangey goodness and at that strength enormously good fun, although you don't want to be carrying too many of these around if you want to last the day - £2.70 from BeerMerchants. Beavertown's whole range is great tbh, save for the disappointing session strength Neck Oil.

There are now lots of new craft beers this year. Vocation brewery's stuff in particular is all fantastic, passes the warm can test, and some of it is now on at 4 for £6 in Tescos.

Took a load of Fursty Ferret (http://www.hall-woodhouse.co.uk/beer/fursty-ferret) last year in cans, passed the warm test or though I put cans under my tent at night to cooldown anyway so wasnt much of an issue.

Excuse my ignorance but whats a polypin? similar to a cask or? Doom bar is my favourite ale but cant find it in cans for love or money!

It's like a very big wine box. My husband re-uses the bags as water carriers afterwards. Advice on carriage and storage here: http://www.beerbarrels2u.co.uk/news/polypin-care

I took a box of Henry Westons Wyld Wood cider last year. Kept it in my rucksack (sorry...:P) with the nozzle hanging out.

I was just about to do a search on for a similar thread from last year.... but then realised that you had quite a heavy input to that one last year so probably no point!

I have noticed that since last Glasto there has been an explosion of nice beers available in cans - I still have to do a test to see which ones work well warm.

I know last time to just bought a couple of each canned beer that my decent local beer shop sells and hoped for the best - not sure my bank balance would appreciate me doing that this year as there now seems to be a lot more available!

lots of choice here....

From last year -  I know that Adnams Ghost Ship is not a bad beverage when slightly warmer than ideal.

Woop! This is a Great Thread! My notable canned beers:

Tanglefoot - its very sessionable cold, and it's more than ok not cold: as a premium best it's a decent strength.

Hobgoblin - same as the 'foot really - the higher abv beers definitely survive being canned better than yer average bitter

hastings breakfast porter - an absolute beauty. Any decent oatmeal porter or stout should work well canned - the Beavertown smoked porter is ace in a can as well

Sierra Nevada torpedo IPA - not easy to find in a can, but it's a delight of a thing at 7.2%. The tropical notes are better mildly chilled, but even if it's not, it's still well worth the ££ purchase

Dark Star revelation - 5.7% of wonderful dark hoppy tastiness. The APA is probably a better beer, but revelation is stronger, and less reliant on being cool. Wicked looking cans too

ill add more in due course, and look forward to other ideas too  the first person to suggest Fosters with Rum will be ritually disembowelled!

doesnt sound that ideal for glastonbury then if it cant take being moved around much, (and ale with sediment in it is awful tasting) need to find something I can carry around with me as dont just want beer for when im at the campsite,  back to looking for cans for me!

They'll filter beer to remove the sediment - it's then known as Bright ale/beer. It won't need settling then. Bright will keep for about five days with no real downturn in taste or flavour. Beyond that I've got no idea, I dont have beer for longer than that

I'm sure I've seen Hobgoblin in a larger 'party pack' can, (are they 4 pint cans) if anyone wants to super size it.

Whats the verdict on BrewDog Punk IPA when slightly warm? Its one of my favorites normally

After being out the country for a couple of months i am delighted to see that BrewDog have lived up on their promise to come steaming into supermarkets all over the uk.

Even Asda bedminster in brizzle now has a whole shelf devoted to them, and mainly in cans (£6 for 4 x 330ml)

Dont think i can justify spending enough to by a whole festivals worth, but i reckon i might get about 4 a day that i can drink early doors before switching onto regular lagers (cheaper) later

Check out M&S for canned craft ales too. Got some Mosaic there (re-branded Adnams Mosaic).

As well as the Mosaic, I have some Vocation beers from Tesco and also some Brewdogs. I also had a trip to France recently where I picked up some Kronenburg Blanc and also some Hoegaarden in 500ml cans.

I like Tribute and often get a tray (24 cans) of that for the festival.

I also usually get a tray of Brains Rev James which is a lovely beer but can't find the on-line shop anymore!

also really like Bath Ales Gem which is available draught sometimes at the festival. Not available in cans but do a micro cask and box   https://www.bathales.com/shop/ales/by-brand/gem/

A lot of my favourites tend to be just draught or bottles. I like stuff like Warsteiner, Estrella, Peroni, Erdinger, Hoegarden, Leffe.. Ideally I'd get a big case of summat like Tyskie or Zywiec, but I'll probably end up with whatever's on offer at B&M that week or summat from Aldi. So long as I can't pronounce it I'm sure it'll be lovely.

Seems wrong, but decanting into an old fizzy water bottle works. I've kept polypin and homebrew that way for weeks. Should work with any bottled beers you like for the week. Need to fill to the top - oxygen is a bad thing for beer.

The only Real Ale that tastes better in a can than in a bottle (IMO) is Adnams Ghost Ship Tescos do 8 cans for £8 try it out.

Decent canned ales I've tried:

Hobgoblin (OK slightly warm too - took 12 cans to Glasto in 2010 and even in that heat they were OK)

Stones Best Bitter.  A Sheffield thing and some of my mates think it smells like stale piss, but I think it's a decent session beer.  Most supermarkets have it pretty cheap.

Bombardier.  Never had it unchilled though.

I bloody love Tribute and drank my bodyweight (which is a lot) of this stuff in Newquay last year.  Never seen it in cans though.  Any idea which retailers I should be looking for???  This could be my Glasto breakfast drink of choice.

It's not as good as their pinball one for the last Euros, but the concept is reasonable. But let's be real, the ITV one is better.
