Oh sorry, the second post is Supercollider.  Audacity names the project after the first sample, if you look closely on the left, you can see some of the true filename.

I've got TKOL on vinyl but as it's not an album I listen to much I can't say I've ever noticed the sound difference, I might give it a spin and compare tonight and report back

I was surprised by how clippy In Rainbows stuff sounded.  I can do all the waveforms if anyone is interested?  I guessed not otherwise I would have done it earlier

There you go. Ignore the window titles, just at the filenames on the left.  On the whole KOL isn't all bad, but the bad ones are bad. Like Feral.

The In Rainbows tracks are pretty loud, but even the bad ones don't totally clip in the same way as the bad KOL tracks.

It is.  So listen to King Of Limbs Live From The Basement is the lesson.  I'm quite pleased they agree with my ears - as far as dynamic range on Radiohead records goes, it doesn't get worse (DR min) than KOL at its worst.

And apart from Itch (which I've not heard), it doesn't get better than SuperCollider/The Butcher.

EDIT: Just noticed I might be wrong also has more range than Supercollider.  Seems like live recording generally do.  Which isn't surprising if you think about it.

Sorry, but to some of us who value fidelity in music, the scourge of the loudness war is the single most insidious development in the history of recorded music.

I have found albums utterly unlistenable due to this problem, and started noticing it long before I had even heard of the loudness war (Californication and One by One by Foo Fighters being two examples).  Some artists seem to be blighted more than others, eg Metallica and Oasis. The Killers may well be an awesome band, but I'll never know because I haven't managed yet to sit through a whole album of theirs due to the horrendously smushed up sound.

It distresses me that artists aren't being more proactive about it.

While we're on the loudness war, I stumbled across an internet person calling themselves 'brickwallhater' who takes loud albums and remasters them using some anti-loud algorithm and posts the results to the usual illicit file-sharing sites.  I'm not sure if he's done any Radiohead but worth a search on the 'bay' and similar, if you're so inclined.

I suspect the problem would always be in finding a singer.

Keith James tours The Songs of Nick Drake fairly regularly. He's not perfect but he's pretty good.

It's not necessarily the producers, but the mastering engineers who are often brought in after the album has been recorded and mixed. Many older albums that were initially mastered well get re-mastered and then brickwalled at that stage. So it's kind of hard to tell who is to blame.
