Radiohead touring in 2016

I love my vinyl but am not convinced the sound is better than CD. 

It is however far, far superior to downloads. I recently got Seldom Seen Kid on vinyl (45 rpm) and am hearing things on there I'd never heard before. I love the whole ritual of putting on an album, dust is a pain in the arse though, I'm getting a cleaning kit at the weekend, I'm interested to see how that works on my old albums from the 80s.

Are you using the same system for playback? What format are you downloading in? CD and 'downloads' are both digital formats, so there's nothing intrinsically superior about CDs vs downloaded music.

Having said that, downloaded music generally uses lossy compression, but blind listening tests show that most people can't actually tell the difference, even if they're sure they can, since ther frequencies discarded are usually inaudible to the human ear.

If you get opportunity, try a blind listen of a few CDs compared to a modern high bitrate download of the same track. I bet you'll be surprised by the results.

Something is lost in not having 2 sides though, or even, in this age of spotify, a running order.  I always remember the sleeve notes from a Lou Reed album telling the listener that the songs should be listened to in order, like watching a film or reading a book, as there was a story to be told and a journey to be shared.

I'm the same. I do miss the physical aspect of owning it, but the convenience of having (practically) everything at the touch of your phone/tablet is just to handy. I put my CD's in storage around 2007 and haven't bought one since.

I used to love singles as a kid. My dad had hundreds and hundreds of them. I got a kids sized set of decks that were only big enough to play singles on and would spend hours going through them all. Knew a ridiculous amount of Kinks and Monkees b-sides for a 7 year old.

I love my vinyl but I like most of the other posters will never have only vinyl.

I buy good albums or my favourite classics and the rest of it I just stream through Apple or Spotify. If I particularly like it, I will get it on vinyl.

I'm a combination - I only ever buy vinyl, unless what I want is genuinely unavailable. I love my vinyl and have a bit of a pathological obsession with those lovely, coloured limited versions at unjustifiably hiked prices. But I would always have the digital versions as well, and it's almost unheard of now for me not to receive a download code with the wax. Also, I'll often (always?) steal an album from the 'net after I've bought it but before the vinyl arrives, and feel fine about it. I listen to huge amount on the move on my iPod (5thG, red [product] version, God I love it...) so need those dig files too.

And my heart soared a couple of nights ago when my music-obsessed 14 year old turned 'round to me in his room where he was listening to Takk... and said' MP3s are crap aren't they?'!!!

Well, at about 15% of the original source data, yes my boy, they pretty much always are!

I buy brand new releases on vinyl from amazon purely because you get the MP3 version included. So I have the digital version for when I'm out and about and the vinyl for home. 

Older stuff I get through the American site.

Just got the new Yndi Halda (only an eight year wait for that 'difficult second album' from this prolific (Ha!) band) on clear-cream spatter vinyl and it's well lush, it is!

It's not just the vinyl but the setup costs as well. It's pointless buying them if you're not going to invest in a decent amp/speaker setup.

And whilst I 'get' great sounding systems, it doesn't really add enough value for to justify the setup.

While we're on the subject,  I've cancelled my month trial with Tidal. After comparing it with Spotify on a Sonos, I found little difference in quality.

I just use a decent amp and EQ, with some high end bookshelf speakers, all of which I purchased second hand from audiophiles at excellent prices.  My whole setup only cost me a couple of hundred quid and gives me the kind of sound that me in my 20s always dreamed of.

I like to listen to Radiohead on it.  Radiohead.  The head.

my set up cost me just shy of 300 excluding speakers that's I already had, not a small amount of money by any means but also not out of the reach of the average worker

it's the vinyl itself that raises the bankers eyebrow, it's only a bit more expensive than CDs but you want so much more of it

I've written about it on here before actually.

It was Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head. Which, since writing about it on here, and doing some research, is actually the second track on the OS. But it's the first I remembet hearing.

 

If you mean the record I played the girls it was the Blue Danube from 2001: A Space Odyssey OS.

Although I put Crooked Rain... on afterwards so the girls didn't think record players didn't just play classical music.

Has anyone heard King of Limbs on vinyl?  I thought the digital versions lacked dynamic range, the waveforms were all maxed, with clipping.

Actually some of the later tracks are fine, particularly Give Up The Ghost Separator, but Bloom and Morning Mr Magpie are brickwalling all over the place.

That's probably why on the latter tracks of the album, it feels like such a sonic relief.  A bit of breathing space.
