I can't believe she's given airtime to this jumped up little prick. He'll probably be reading that pulling himself stupid over being given a large media forum to popularise his narrow minded spiel

Agreed mate. Dare I say it betrays a lack of confidence.

Hasn't Michael or Emily said the lineup will be released on April 2nd? Maybe I'm imagining it but I'm sure I read that somewhere.

I tried to go back and find it but couldn't, if anyone can link it in, but I'm certain too that michael said April 1st would be the date

But it's michael so get the salt at the ready

I don't know, I think she handled it really well. It didn't try and win him or people like him over, it very politely but firmly said "we're very proud of the festival we run and the acts we book, and if you don't like it then that's not our problem and there are plenty of other places you can be."

I was more disappointed that she fed that and other trolls by talking to a newspaper and justifying what she'd done

That particular troll was only fed because Emily felt that the negativity that had built up in the press (not the particular press outlet her opinion piece was distributed by, it should be noted), merited comment.

And, let's be honest, it did.

Regardless of whether anyone here rates Kanye or not, he will go down as one of the most influential artists in his genre, and, his generation. And, that's from someone who isn't a massive fan, and doesn't particularly like the guy. But anyone who says he isn't deserving of the slot (based on artistic merit - as others have pointed out - plenty of absolute assholes have headlined before without comment), is plain wrong and completely out of touch. Whether you like it or not, when the creator of one of the early frontrunners for album of the year (Kendrick's new one) cites him as a major influence, who are we non-album of the year runners to argue?

The sort of witch-hunt that has been spearheaded, probably unintentionally, by this petition, is against the ethos of the festival, significantly more than avoiding signing assholes to headline is anyway...

Persoanlly, I reckon they shouldn't have published that, it's all died down already, storm in a teacup, was no reason to give these c**ts any more of the publicity they so desperately crave.

Yep. Reacting to -taking seriously- these clowns looks naive at best.

I can see that argument certainly, but I think she adopted just the right tone. I doubt she'll be addressing the issue again, except maybe through the free press paper they produce on the Friday/Saturday, gently reminding people that if they don't like it, they can go and watch someone else.

I'm sure it would have died down of its own accord, but things like that run the risk of growing grass-roots movement and can look pretty bad for the Festival, and other artists who may consider headlining but are watching the reaction of the rabid mob online and think twice.

Agreed, it's a bit of a shame. The bit where she said she wonders how it makes Kanye west feel was a bit cringey.

I suspect he couldn't give a fucking shit what a bunch of nomarks think, which is exactly how she should be feeling. Especially considering she said only 4 extra people have cancelled their tickets.

Im surprised that they felt the need to comment. They obviously discussed the petition / mock outcry and made the decision to release a press statement.

What I do now wonder is if they have booked Taylor a Swift or say another non indie act do they have the courage of their conviction to go through with it. Correct me if Im wrong but I can't remember them coming out in public previously to defend a booking ? If it is T Swift ( which wouldn't bother me at all if if is ) the storm would be equal and would they want to have to come out again to defend their booking ?

Could they perhaps make last minute changes to appease the masses of would they be like these are the headliners, deal with it.

I wonder if we should spare a thought for the bloke who started the petition, who says he only did it as a bit of a joke. I imagine that he must be feeling pretty swamped from the attention he never expected (I'm sure his wasn't the only petition made against Kanye, just the one bandwagon jumpers hopped onboard). It serves as a cautionary tale, if nothing else, don't start an online petition or you might end up splashed all over the news as a bit of a closed minded dick.

That petition is almost at 100,000 signatures, they needed to comment to just say they'd stand their ground on the decision (cause they always would) Whether you believe he deserves the slot or not, that's a lot of people against the booking, the metallica one didn't get anything near that

Nope. He was loving the attention, felt he had done the right thing as the festival needed to be kept on it toes. Wouldn't engage with anyone about his comments on the Brits performance. Has since locked his Twitter account.

Nah. The guy's Twitter account revealed he's a bit of an unpleasant kind of guy. I'm sure he never expected this much attention, but his initial argument was bullshit and if he feels a bit of a twat, it's probably because he is. The ugly nature of Commenting On Things online inevitably leads to hyperbole, exaggeration and abuse, but he seems pretty well versed in it, and I suspect he's actually feeling rather chuffed with his 15 minutes. He hardly said no to NME when they came knocking for a comment.

It's not 'the masses', though. It's a statistically tiny number of people from all over the world who just don't like Kanye West for reasons both dubious and unpleasant, and perfectly legitimate. I'm pretty sure there will be more people on site who'd either like to see him or are indifferent than there spotty teenage keyboard warriors feigning outrage just to feel like they belong to some kind of movement.

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
