Thanks for the words of support guys, i need to do it for health reasons so im hopeful once i get started that i'll stick to it but finding the time to exercise is going to be difficult

You only need to put aside 20mins; walking is a great way to break back into exercise. If you live near hills even better. Failing that, start out by walking up/down some stairs, say for 5 mins initially.

Once you get into a routine it can be quite addictive, honest :)

Aim to do your routine 2-3 times a week, oh and eat and drink sensibly. A common mistake is for people to reward themselves after exercise, which is ok occasionally, but it kinda defeats the object if you continually do it.

Like I said, it sounds easy, and I suppose it is; long term you'll reap the benefits but there is no quick fix, it takes time.

Start today, go on, you know it makes sense :)

Operation Get Fit, Get Jawline is firmly in full swing.

5lbs lost since last Monday! :D

Using an app on my phone to track what I've eaten and how much exercise I've been doing. No changes in diet, just eating less - between 1200-1400 calories a day. I've been doing 60 minutes on an exercise bike every day bar Sundays, 30 minutes before work and 30 minutes after work.

And Saturday night and Sundays are my blowout days when I just eat whatever the hell I like!

It worked this week, let's see how the next week goes!

I decided to get fit last September, I eat 2000 calories and go to the gym and run. So far I have lost nearly 2stone :D

This year for charity i am cutting suger out of my diet. Fucking hell you don't realise how addictive the stuff is! I have had horrible withdrawal symptoms for the past 20 days and at the start was properly craving the stuff. Think that's over now though so hopefully things will get easier

Hopefully the two go hand in hand now to sort me out :)

More advice.......:)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-30915437

Agree with you kemosabe, hidden sugars are the no.1 enemy! All very well being 'fat free' but a lot of foods (and drinks) have a shit load of sugar in them; beware.

Marvellous stuff on losing 2st, you'll be fit as a butchers dog come June! And good effort there Andeeroo, a great start :)

Feel the burn pop pickers..........

Can't imagine giving up sugar, sounds like it is so hard!

I've lost 9 pounds since New Year with working out, eating better and Dry January probably helps.

Hopefully will keep it up until june :D

Can't wait to get to glasto and eat and drink everything though.

Bumping this thread again.

Morning One Eye and all - your opinions gratefully received.

How far does ones metabolism slow your ability to lose the weight?

Really struggling to lose very much - despite significant change to diet.

Dodgy ticker at the moment waiting for date for op which hopefully will help. In the meantime on loads of meds 2 of which are there to slow the heart drastically and minimise its arrhythmia. Also buggers the energy levels and affects the appetite. End result is the speed at which my heart works is controlled as it aint working very well which then affects my breathing (very easily short of breath). Would that then slow/ work against weight loss?

I'm reading mixed messages about the metabolism online and would be interested to see what people think.

imo the whole metabolism thing is massively overstated. obviously some people's will work faster than others, but generally it comes down to diet and exercise

i've probably mentioned this earlier in this thread but something i've found that helps me lose weight / burn fat massively is intermittent fasting - i'd strongly advise anybody looking to lose weight to look it up. it's basically fasting for 16 hours a day, which boosts your body in to fat burning mode. sounds horrible, and basically goes against everything you learn as a young'un (the great myth of breakfast being the most important meal of the day) but i've been doing it for just under two years now and i can't imagine going back to my old eating habits (and as daunting as not eating for 16 hours sounds, stop eating 4 hours before bed, 8 hours sleep, don't eat until 4 hours after you wake up. drink stuff like green tea / black coffee (no sugar), water and other zero calorie or caffeine filled drinks to blunt your appetite). obviously you still have to be in a caloric deficit for this to work, but it really helps speed up the process

Is it possible to do the fasting bit at any time of the day and how could that work? Reason I ask is that I have a tablet that has to be taken with food and really needs to be taken first thing in the morning. And how intermittent is intermittent (days-wise)? The regime itself doesn't seem that bad - and I really only drink green tea in any case.

Cheers for any further advice FF.

the fasting can be done at any time but has to be one 16 hour stretch, so in your case you could just stop eating earlier before you go to bed (although not eating 8 hours or so before bed may be a bit harder- having to eat your tea before 4 if you want to go to bed at 12 etc). i do it every day i can (sometimes it just doesn't fit in to my daily schedule so i have to work around it) but it still works if you only do it for the majority of the week

another similar diet that may be better for you is the 5/2 diet, which is basically eating regularly (within reason) for 5 days a week and then only eating 500 calories for two days a week. i think a lot of people find this easier as you just do your 500 calorie days on days you know you'll be busy (work days etc) so that you're not constantly thinking of eating. 500 calories isn't a lot but if you're smart you can space if between a couple of meals (a salad and a soup etc) or just have one big(ish) meal

I could have sworn I bumped this thread a couple of days ago; my post has disappeared?!

Oh well, anyway....

Some good advice there FloorFiller, though you do need self discipline to stick to fasting or 5/2 eating, not sure that I could ever do either, but if it works for you then marvellous.

Sounds to me TDW that you need to get your dodgy ticker back up and running first and foremost, then the rest will be easier to manage.

Fingers crossed you get in and sorted in the very near future; fewer meds has gotta be the way ahead.

All the best :)

I should really give this a crack this year. I managed 3 half marathons and a full 26 miler yet I weighed in over 4lb's heavier than I did in January 15 compared to last year. I've gotten rid of that and had a healthy start to the year but I had minor surgery last week and I'm pretty much couch bound for the next week which doesn't help much.

Long term goal in the next 3 months is to shift a stone.

Myself and Missus B got one of those Nutribullets in November to help us get healthier. Not sure whether it's just a placebo effect but we're shovelling a lot more fruit and veg into our bodies along with seeds and nuts and we've both noticed we're a lot more chipper these days. They're not cheap (the fruit and veg you consume rockets your shopping bill up) but its worked for us. Certainly for her.

evening all !

Some great inspiration coming off this thread though I have to admit I am not sticking to my healthy eating plan as well as I had hoped ( just finished off all the celebrations chocs that my daughter didn't like from her xmas pressies !!! )

Floorfiller I tried that starvation diet about 18 months ago and after a few weeks not seeing much benefit I did a bit more research and apparently it is a much more successful weight loss plan for men than women. Hope you keep seeing good results from it though.

TDW I have a dodgy knee which doesn't compare to your heart problems but a recent report suggested that just standing rather than sitting is actually very good exercise so something we can all do a bit more of, Thurlow84 this could be something you can do too, I am trying to stand up to do things more if I have the choice.

Stay motivated all

A good old stomach bug helped me lose my Christmas timber in 3 days.

Stayed off the alcohol all January but off to Berlin at the weekend so it will be my first drink of 2015.

I don't think much prepares the legs for the amount of walking you do at Glastonbury, especially when you have to trudge through the mud.

I'm doing 1200 kcal/ day and working out 3-5 times /week since december and I've lost about 28 pounds but yeah, lots more that has to go.

I got hit by a nasty cold thought that's made me a bit meh and so I was thinking of doing a 24 h fast to get myself in gear again and since I'm not really a breakfast-person, 16 h fast sounds like something I can do.

FloorFiller- is it very hard getting used to the new eating schedule?

i actually found getting in to that schedule incredibly easy. i go to the gym in the mornings, so just drink a cup of green tea and a bottle of water beforehand, go to the gym, and then by the time i get home it's time to eat! but even on my non-gym days, i'm fine. works a lot easier initially if you keep yourself busy during the fast instead of sitting there thinking about food. now i don't even think about it

I might give it a go then. I usually work out in the afternoon (after work) though since I start work before the sun comes up. That shouldn't be too big of a problem right?

I've got an adjustable standing desk at work so I can stand for a few hours a day. I'm walking 10 miles at the weekend when possible, building up to a marathon. Just gotta get my walking and standing strength up in case of mud I don't want to flag!
