The 2014 Glasto Get Fit Thread

I've never even been to Glastonbury but knew I'd have to sort myself out before next year. I'm unfortunate enough to have flat feet so I know all too well of the pain I'll endure if I had to wear boots/wellies every day. Bestival was bad enough for me last year. The walk back on the Monday was straight up the biggest hill I've ever seen, might as well have been Everest with a rucksack and tent on my back.

I managed to lose weight and improve my fitness before this years Glastonbury and it really made a difference! I fell off the wagon a bit over the summer, but now its time to get back on and get into good habits before Christmas rolls around. My brother has got into the London marathon so I'll try and do some of his small weekday runs with him :)

I lost about 4.5 stone (was 22 stone in February) in bout 4 months before Glasto last year. Since then I've put on about a stone (about 18.5 now) but hoping if I really dedicate myself from now until then I can get down to a weight I would be proud of. About 6 stone loss (so aiming for 12.5 stone) from now to then would be great. Got an exercise bike so been using that loads and I'm on the go all the time at work (plus walk 6 miles a day to get there and back). So basically I reckon if I dedicate myself then I could do it. Would be nice as would be the first time I've been a decent weight since 2009.

(bro talk warning): i'm on a bulk at the moment, trying to put on some decent muscle etc, so have put on a bit of weight due to the huge amount of calories i'm consuing (haven't been able to weigh myself but i look a lot 'stockier') and will be doing this up until Christmas and maybe a bit after, but then i'm going on a cut and will hopefully shed some of the unwanted fat and retain muscle in time for the festival! tbh i'm in it a lot more for the appearance than the physical benefit, although they come somewhat hand in hand so i'm sure i'll be better off carrying all my stuff than this year!

I have put on two stone this year (and counting) and am the fattest I have ever been. I am really feeling the weight gain just walking around as I am getting out if breath even walking short distances. I even managed to put on weight during Glastonbury this year! None of my clothes fit anymore as I have a massive cider belly. I will be waddling round the festival at this rate. Everyone is noticing my weight gain and friends and family have been commenting. I always used to be able to eat and drink what I want but not anymore. I am officially a fatty! I am so embarassed!

Don't be so hard on yourself and no need to be embarrassed, it happens to all of us as time passes. In my case when I hit 30 my metabolism slowed down a bit and I couldn't eat and drink the same things as I used to. Then it dropped another gear when I hit 40. I found that if I gave up food I could live purely on biscuits and tea.

I quit smoking yesterday, so hopefully my lung capacity will be higher. It is going to be tough, but I am not going for any ecigs or patches this time.

It is all about the lifestyle, it isn't about 'getting in shape' it is about changing lifestyles, making things fit into your daily routine and not feeling like getting healthy is a chore.

Cut out crisps, chocolate, fizzy drinks and probably beer and bread and just walk 3km a day.

It is not about a quick fix with losing weight and getting healthy, it is about sustaining.

After reaching an all time fatness of around 14 1/2 stone, in January I decided to get in shape and sort it out. I've always been a fit and healthy person, but settling down had taken its toll on my beer gut.

I trained for and completed the Chester half marathon and lost two stone along the way. After completing it, I've done jack and have probably put it all back on.

I need to sort this out. No, having a daughter, I don't really want to commit to all the time long distance running takes out. So for me, it's gonna be the following:

Reduce portion size;

cut out crisps

cut down take-a-ways to two a month;

reduce beer intake; and

take the dog out for an additional walk each day

Hopefully, I will naturally reduce my weight this way and legs will be primed for glasto walks!

something i've been doing for the past two months or so is Intermittent Fasting. it's basically fasting for 16+ hours a day and then eating all your food in the remaining 8 or less hours. supposedly fasting for those 16 hours allows your body to burn fat better (and it just fits in with my schedule a lot better than eating 'normally') and i feel great! i'd advise anybody interested in losing fat to give it a go (if your work / schedule doesn't make it impossible, that is)

Wasn't this sort of idea proved to be unhealthy for you? I thought the current idea of being healthy and increasing how you burn fat was smaller and and more often (On a daily basis)?

I've start doing push up's of a morning, well doing them against the counter to build up to doing proper ones....still not quite getting the hang of getting out of bed in the morning with time to get on the cross trainer before work :P

I think people think too much when they're trying to lose weight.

You could eat 3 big macs a day (about 1500 calories altogether) and lose weight. Althought it would be very unhealthy :P. Find your calories maintenance level (use this http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm ). As a pound is normally 3500 calories, if you want to lose a pound a week just eat 500 cals under your maintenance. 7x500=3500 calories.

I'm currently just under 9 stone and 5'9ish. I just try to eat a lot of protein and work on my arms. However I do eat a lot of shit, i.e crisps, pizza, donuts and beer/cider. :P

yeah it all basically comes down to calories in / calories out. as you said, you could eat all junk food and be under maintenance and lose weight (although that's obviously not the right way to go about it and you'll probably feel like shit)

and i've heard the opposite. the whole 'eat 5 / 6 small meals a day every 3 hours' thing seems to be outdated (and inefficient - who has time to cook / eat every 3 hours!?)

if you want to lose weight, eating up to 500 under maintenance is definitely the way to go. however you go about that is up to you! good luck to everybody in their quest to get fit for Glastonbury!

Thanks Clarkete. Just feeling sorry for myself. It's hard getting bigger, especially when people start saying "wow, you've put on a lot of weight!" And pointing to my stomach as if I haven't noticed! I suppose it's worse as I was always a thin person and now I have got fat. Buying new clothes was also depressing as I have gone up three sizes and can't wear what I want anymore. Having to buy clothes because you have to rather than because you want to is rubbish! I may have to try the tea and biscuits diet!

Oooh, I'll get in on this.

My doctor has recommended me to make lifestyle changes to lower my blood pressure otherwise they're going to have to consider putting me on medication. I'm only 28 and I'm supremely unfit.

Thanks to a few of you mentioning it I've just discovered Couch to 5K. I'm going to get cracking on that, although I'm already anticipating how embarrassing I'll find it in the early weeks to be huffing and puffing my way around. I last went to Glastonbury in 2008 and although I wasn't much smaller then, I was certainly fitter.

Hi Everyone,

I am a Industrial Design Student looking for some user feedback and I've finally come across this thread hoping you can help me. The project entails creating a new portable camp stove for festival goers, campers, outdoor enthusiasts etc. I was hoping you could post how much you cook when outside if at all, and if so what you use? Any ideas are greatly appreciated too and I will make sure to get back to you.

Thanks a lot

Stick with it. It's hard going to start with particularly if like me you've never really done any morning but I finally finished the programme this morning and I started after Glastonbury this year. I'm now going to do 1 5k run a week, 1 interval run and 1 where i try to up the distance so that I can eventually run 10k.

Another vote here for IF, after you get past the idea of not eating for sixteen hours is a crazy concept, you realise a) it's easier to fit in to your lifestyle and b ) during the eating window you can eat like a boss!

Having done 6 meals for a long time, wouldn't go back to it now.

Good luck to everyone looking to get fit, you've got 8 months, no excuses! :)

Thanks for this - it's good to have some encouragement. I've never really been a runner, I'm much more of a plodder so I will definitely struggle. And congrats on finishing the course! You must be feeling pretty good.

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
