Old duffers album of the week

So it’s getting a bit dull and repetitive on here. For example, What the hell are you doing discussing 2027 headliners at this stage.

So just for something to, hopefully, keep us entertained while we wait, I’m going to present an album of the week each Friday. Not the best album released that week, but an “all timer”.

White Light/White Heat

Velvet Underground

I struggled to choose between this and The Velvet Underground and Nico. WLWH was chosen for Sister Ray, an immensely dark and twisted track and the Gift

Not my favourite NO album but up there, 1985 was a memorable year for me generally, and includes one of my favourite tracks of all time in Sunrise (bonus video of a raw live version).  And Denis Law makes the pic too.

So to be considered acceptable for this list do we have an age limit? 20th century?

I’d like to suggest Angel Dust by Faith No More. Still sounds amazing to this day.

No age limit at all. I’ll be posting some relatively recent albums at some point

This one for me is always going to be in my top 10. I was in 6th form when it came out, desperately trying to be cool and moving away from mainstream chart music. I finally got to see them play live this year, which was a bucket list tick.

I still have a preference for the 1st album, probably for the presence of Nico, but this is still a great album. I didn't go to Glasto the year they played, but did catch them at Wembley Arena; one reunion I never thought would happen. Saw Nico too, supporting John Cale at what is now the London Forum. For better or worse, these albums were pretty much the blueprint for a lot of alternative rock for decades to come

I saw them in Swansea about a month before Low Life came out; they played most of it live.

I wasn’t planning to pick this album yet, although it’s on the list, but after yesterday’s sad news…

The Stone Roses (1989).

I was fortunate to move to Manchester in 1988, perfect timing! Every time I hear an track from this superb album I’m instantly transported back to those memories

Its one of an absolute handful of 10/10 albums for me (Slayer - Reign in blood would be the other right off the bat, and i'll ponder any others)

I remember buying this when it was first released and was spellbound by it, and still am.

First album i got when i was a kid - admittedly a strange seven year old in 1986 who clearly fancied the previous decade a lot more!
