“put all the black artists”

I know people love jumping on anything Supre says, but in their defence sometimes it has felt like some black artists who are popular/mainstream enough to be on the Pyramid have been shoved on West Holts (or Jazzworld as it was). Whether this is just because the stage booker is a big fan of theirs or because there has been an undertone of "non-white acts = world music" at the fest probably isn't a question that can be answered (at least not by wild speculation on an internet forum), but there definitely has been a bit of a "put all the black artists on WH" vibe some years.

You get black artists all over, Truth Stage and multiple venues in Silver Hayes. How about Stormzy and Little Simz? Run the Jewels, De La Soul, Wu Tang Clan, Stevie Wonder to name but a few that have been on the Pyramid

Well yes, I don't think Supre is saying literally every black artist is on WH. And of course some might choose a later slot on WH over an earlier one on Pyramid or Other. But sometimes it has been like "why is [popular mainstream black artist] on Jazzworld when there's nothing 'jazz' or 'world' about their music? 🤔"

I know they dont fit the ''these are where we put all the black artists'' stage vibe.

Last year all the West Holts headliners were white?

I think it's not as simple as saying West Holts is a stage where they put black artists. It's more the fact that it tends to book a lot of acts within the hip hop, soul, R&B, jazz, world, electronic, reggae, funk and disco genres. Genres which tend to have a lot of black representation, but I could list quite few white artists that have been booked for the stage within those genres too.

Does anyone have any idea where Joe Goddard will be playing and in what guise?

Was on the way to the Park to see him a few years ago and got caught up in Goldie doing a Rave & Jungle set on Arcadia.

Apologies if this has been covered with knowledge/intel, but are we sure that Noah Kahan is a sub? Given the alphabetical nature of the poster below each day's top two lines, it seems odd to have a sub on the top line, though I realise that Raye seems locked in as a sub...

My question arises from my typical position of being relatively uninterested in many of the definite/likely headliners for the Big Five™️, not that's too big an issue - I always find a brilliant set at headliner time, even if not on Pointy to Park. But, after last year's personal paucity of Fri-Sun headliners, I'd really like to see Noah Kahan close one of the biggies.

I hope so, I really want to see Prodigy too. If he clashes with them I'll be gutted.

Just had a look at Friday trying to work out who might headline WH. Seen a few suggestions for Busta Rhymes. He kinda past me by, just had a listen, okay but not convinced, bit of a “pound shop Snoop”.

Any chance it may be Burning Spear? If not either of these then who?

I've heard people say they did, but I listened back and didn't hear it.

I went back and listened to the episode on the lineup announcement, and I didn’t hear them mention it either—unless It was on a podcast after that one.

Did he not mention it on his breakfast show? Hoping he’s not to be honest, defo see him through the day but not sure I’d commit to a headliner if there’s other options.

Checking out his recent set lists and he’s been opening with the Ante Up remix which is exactly the sort of thing I want to be hearing at a festival! What a banger.

I think Goldie playing The Glade is the only thing that came out of the breakfast show.

The placements on the podcast were just the ones on the press release on the official site.

  • 4 weeks later...

Beth Gibbons told me the other night that she thinks she's playing on the Park Stage.

This surprised me because I'd thought she'd be on Woodsies.  Didn't feel appropriate to push for more information, sorry. She's keen to watch Neil Young though, so she's either unaware that she's conflicting with him or there's no clash.

    • Maybe hopeful but get Knocked Loose on the Sunday opposite the legend. Similar to the slot Turnstile had in 2022. Would be absolutely phenomenal.
    • One of my personal favourite bands at the minute - MUNA. Was very surprised not to see them booked in 2023 with their last album but hopefully they'll be around next year. Very fun new album from these guys and, as aforementioned, another standout for me at Big Weekend.
    • Absolutely second this. Were great at Big Weekend and already have a great catalogue of songs forming so far. Would love to see them on the farm!
    • A mixed first day for us. First of all, we were honestly quite shocked that there was no security check at all at the VIP entrance around 7:30 PM. No bag check, nothing. I’ve attended Primavera many times over the years and this felt surprisingly lax for an event of this size. Did anyone else experience the same?   Another disappointment was the communication regarding the weather situation. Primavera has some of the best sound systems and speaker setups in the festival world, yet somehow they were not able to make a single clear announcement explaining what was happening. Instead, people were expected to read tiny messages on screens in Mordor while thousands were left wondering what was going on. A simple and direct audio announcement would have gone a long way.   On a lighter note, this guy absolutely made my day. Sitting right in front of the Estrella Damm terrace, wearing nothing but a long-sleeve shirt, jeans and a pair of Converse All Stars, he remained completely unbothered by the rain. While everyone else was looking for shelter, he sat there wearing sunglasses, calmly watching the crowd as if he was watching a movie.   Absolute main character energy!
    • I think my party got pretty lucky last night, at least compared to some of the horror stories over on Reddit. I was very impressed with Father John Misty in particular.   Perhaps my view would be different if I were a big Massive Attack fan or whatever, but right now my feeling is that if it's not safe for the shows to go ahead... then it's not safe for the shows to go ahead. I'd much rather they were cautious than roll the dice when it comes to something like that.    Here's hoping everyone has a better day today.
