Not gonna claim to be a fan but I have a real soft spot for Total Eclipse after a weirdly emotional rendition by the host of the late night cabaret tent at Wilderness 2021. Was a genuinely lovely moment. Although TBF it was my second post COVID festival so everything was a little heightened.

Ronnie Le Drew death: Puppeteer behind Rainbow character Zippy dies, aged 79

A few of the oldies like me might remember a lovely guy called Pete Loveday who had his own comic stall in the green fields back in the eighties and nineties..

 

He wrote the Big Bang and Big Trip comics featuring the sagas of Russell the peaceful man.

 

I first encountered his comics at the 87 festival when my mate and I found some that someone had left behind.   Firstly, it was my first festival at the age of 17 so I was already bowled over by the whole thing and being exposed to this amazing counter-culture of new age travellers and other fringes of society. 
 

Pete’s comics encapsulated everything about what we were experiencing, from the people, to the drugs which were featured heavily, well weed and acid and shrooms mainly.

 

I recently learned that he had passed away 2 years ago but couldn’t see that he'd been remembered on this thread so I thought I’d give him a mention.

 

He used to design some posters for Glastonbury festival as well as working with the people behind the secret garden Party festival too.

 

I can whole heartedly recommend his comics especially if you remember going to festivals in the eighties and nineties or you know what Red Leb is!

At our primary school in the 70's we had a 'school puppeteer' who revealed in assembly that she was leaving Harrogate as she was off to marry Ronnie Le Drew.  Needless to say when she mentioned Zippy we were all very excited! 😀

Oh crap. That one has hit me quite a bit.

 

Someone who you could tell genuinely found joy in being able to share live music with people - no matter whether it was 40,000 people in a field or 40 people in a tiny room (and I've seen him in both scenarios over the years).

Very Sad, knew him through his performance in the film Once and was lucky to catch him a couple of times including his time with the Swell Season.

Absolutely gutted by this I've seen Once more times that I care to remember, but his solo work was also exceptional. Only time I saw him was in Acoustic Tent 2023. RIP

Beyond gutted, The Frames were one of my favourite bands, glad to see them a whole bunch over the years (my first show being their 2003 set in the Acoustic Tent), as well as Glen solo and a couple of Swell Season gigs.

Yeah. He started the busking on Grafton St (Dublin high street) on Christmas eve for the homeless charities. Just turned up on his own one year, started playing and singing. Grew into a huge thing. Bono et al.
