I think Janelle Monae is pretty niche.  As we have discussed, Spotify metrics can trick you into thinking someone is "bigger" than they are, but I'm surprised to see Tightrope (which I'd guess is in her top 5 most "commercial" songs) only has 49m plays.  Think we can all agree Pyramid wasn't the right place for her.  Avril Lavigne by contrast is easily identifiable as "fun"/"wouldn't attend a specific gig but if she's at Glastonbury I will see her" and pop punk/emo (don't anyone get on their high horse and come after me for that genre generalisation) has a huge UK audience.

From the Glastonburys I've attended, there's certainly a part of the demographic that wants to get smashed on if possible the Wednesday, certainly the Thursday, with the music almost an inconvenience.  So not surprising plenty of folk are burst by the Sunday.  Not saying it's right or wrong.

I don't agree there's no reputational impact of a Sunday exodus.  SZA's team certainly isn't going to have encouraging words for any act considering the Sunday evening.

Even without Avril there Janelle Monae was never going to be a busy one

She's not underrated, she just has her crowd and kinda niche genre with not a lot of crossover. Put her headlining WHs and you'll see the difference. Not within and around the legend slot/nastolgia other stage slot where it's a one time only for some.

With the popularity of other artists and how great she is, i would say she is definitely underrated.

However, I would 100% agree her positioning was all wrong.

If she played 4 sets closing out the WH stage on any given day  - i think id be there for all 4 unless anything very special was on elsewhere.

I don't think there is a lot of appetite for anything vaguely cerebral and challenging on the pyramid anymore - it all needs to have a certain degree of singalongability after say 2pm.

I like a singsong as much as the next woman but it can all be a one note for me with that one note being An Evening Out at the Darts rather than A Curated Event at the Barbican.

Does the music reflect the crowd or the crowd reflect the music. Chicken or egg?

Anyway it’s little wonder I feel more at home and comfortable at WH

Last year was atypically weak on the Pyramid, but even then the subs were LCD Soundsystem, Little Simz and Burna Boy.

Agree for majority of the festival. Was on the hill all Saturday though.

Cyndi Lauper (who was shite) > Keane > Michael Kiwanuka > Little Simz > Coldplay

Class run in the sun.

As in who's on the line-up or the design?

Or both?

I haven’t particularly studied the line up so it’s not a criticism of that.

I find the design extremely bland, and with the pastel colours it looks like it’s designed for children, and even by children (although presumably AI) It gives me no idea what kind of festival it is, and doesn’t drag me in to want to enquire.

What’s the likelihood of Biffy Clyro playing the festival this time around and where would they sit on the lineup? has there been any info on them? Schedule seems pretty open and they’ve already confirmed a range of dates and playing all kinds of slots on different lineups.

Would’ve had them Other headliner if the trio of Loyle/Charli/Prodigy didn’t seem so nailed on. Pyramid sub would seem very reasonable too but I have Paramore (kinda out of hope for Hayley’s solo schedule not getting in the way), Kasabian (if that info from the other day is accurate) and Chappell so I’ve put them as a secret set for the time being. Hope they do show up somewhere!

its not a large fest ( 30k ). It takes place in Napa so that should be your first indication its for people that got money to burn. And food and wine enthusiats. They have cooking demos and all that stuff with famous chefs and they collab with artists that perform. One year this fest got the bright idea to charge $4,000 for a vip package that included a photo pass. So they essentially sold spots that regular media outlets wouldve had cause they wanted some rich knob to pretend they could take photos.

Still remain surprised how big the crowd was for LCD Soundsystem.

I expected it.  I caught them with my son and he said he wasn't expecting the crowd, but it felt like they would be a strong draw in the slot, lovely sunset guaranteed and their previous Other stage performance is extremely well remembered and evangelised by those who were there.

Given how bad Cyndi was and taking out Keane who was great and Coldplay it was a terrible day for the Pyramid. 2023 Saturday and Sundah though were pretty terrible too.

I only saw the latter 3, Michael Kiwanuka was ok, nothing special, Simz I absolutely loved and Coldplay, while being the big entertaining spectacle and the crowd singing their hearts out was a treat it was the weakest of the 4 times I've seen them.  I'm still happy to have watched them, they are always a feel good fun time and pull out all the stops to deliver a visual spectacular alongside the tunes.

Sounds like Wilderness Festival.

Glastonbury is clearly becoming a victim of its own size.. so many people are booked in a slot above where they would’ve been 10 years ago, sometimes even two slots.
A lot of it down to costs and the climate following COVID.

But it’s only going to get worse, in the next 10-15 years everyone is going to get their 15 minutes of TikTok fame and that is how people will discover artists and decide who the next big act is. It’s also why we’re getting shite like Sophie Ellis Bexter on the pyramid, anything with nostalgia or a viral undertone is an easy win with the youth. In 2035 we’ll be looking back and longing for these days, enjoy them 😢
