Her whole country shtick is blatantly careerist given that it's the new trend in the USA. Luckily I doubt she'll play the fest.

Correct. She saw there was money to be made and went for it. Total cop out though.

She could do an album of Mongolian throat singing and it’d still get to top of charts and be forced down our necks by every radio station in the country.

Nah.  It's clearly been recorded over years and years.

This is 9 years old now:

yeah I don’t think she was just chasing the dollar… she doesn’t exactly need to!
she grew up in Texas, surrounded by Country music but was made to feel like she didn’t belong in that genre due to her skin colour.

I don’t like country music so the less of it the better for me, but saying she’s faking it is a bit off.  She’s just got a loud enough voice now to shout over the people that have always said that she doesn’t belong in the genre.

Plus the album deliberately spotlights black country singers like Linda Martell who've been neglected by Nashville.

Frankly, I think utilizing actual OG acts from the past like that is also a careerist move, no different from the way she covered/interpolated The Beatles and Dolly Parton on that record.

A Beyonce Mongolian throat singing record would likely slap and be a good gateway into that genre for n00bs, so bring it on.

Beyonce doesn't need to haul herself any further up the fame ladder by covering Jolene.

If you want to argue that that's a way of making the album more palatable to the (musically conservative) Nashville establishment and to present herself as being the latest in a long line of black country artists like Charley Pride I'll agree with you, but I don't think that'd necessarily a 'careerist' move.

In fact, it's an odd criticism to make of someone who manages to successfully combine global superstar status with genuine artistic chops.

So wait, a black artist decided to make 3 concept albums about music genres which are historically black and you think its careerist?  Shows you how ignorant your music knowledge is. House music is black music. Country music is black music. And the Blues is also black music.( thats album 3 )  Just cause you think Led Zeppelin and The Chemical Brothers are god's gift doesnt mean they didnt get influenced by the ones who started it. How the hell is somebody from Texas not growing up without country music in their house. The album cover for Cowboy Carter should explain all of this to you pretty clearly. But you know what, why would I think anyone would look past a few yourube clips they watch and say its not their thing.

oh darn, go watch some blokes with guitars then somewhere else, she aint gonna care if you dont like it.

You got this one wrong mate... Skip leads the campaign against blokes with guitars cluttering up the main stages 🤣

I think he meant it would be a shame if she came and did the country stuff, rather than the good stuff.

I don't think she's trying to branch out her audience to the hardcore Nashville crowd; this is just another way to get normies on board, and she knows that the American music press tastemakers will eat it up and promote whatever narrative she puts out (look at how they all fell in line on Renaissance).

And covering Jolene and Blackbird says a lot about the lack of genuine artistic chops in my book.

If I'm understanding you right - that great artists don't do cover- versions? - then we're not going to see eye to eye on this topic.

Creating a crappy girlboss version of Jolene isn't my idea of a great artist. But I respect different opinions and am glad you seem to like it.

Popping in to see what's what ... Who are we thinking for headliners?

Sorry, too tired/can't be bothered to scroll up!

Daphne and Celeste are now 8/11 on SkyBet.

Also, I think the consensus is still The 1975 somehow, and Olivia Rodrigo.

I'm very, very excited about some of the names banded about on the Stage Predictions thread, so I won't be too disheartened if I (for the first time in 7 Glasto's) don't see one Pyramid headliner, but I am a little disappointed for the 3 first timers who are coming with us this year. I know they won't be arsed about any of the "three". Which is a crying shame.

There’s something special about seeing an artist you love headlining the Pyramid.

Glad I got to experience Muse, Radiohead, McCartney and will get to experience Neil Young on ol’ pointy!

Hope they have a blast anyway! There’s been a year or two I’ve never seen a single Pyramid headliner and still had a great experience elsewhere.

Fingers crossed for your pals one day they’ll get to see one of their favourites on the big one.

Having seen Daphne and Celeste at reading 2000 I'm surprised they ever played live again

So it's as you were! Many thanks. Yeah might not be seeing any headliner on el pointo this year!

Only a problem if you've got a ticket though

Says more about them than the festival

As in the famed borderline riot that happened during that set? That must've felt intense.

    • Boards of Canada never perform live, I doubt they'll start now. Also Strokes have a show in Barcelona next tour so also less likely.   And adding Nine Inch Noize to the mix And we should definitely get Iggy Pop back before his body completlt dismantles
    • Starmer wagging his finger with a stern warning again. The media are briefed they'll  ban social media for under 16s then he stands up and makes an empty threat on nude images. Why does he keep doing this?
    • My top 5:   1. Little Simz (her appearance with Gorillaz was also one of the highlights of their show. The absolute winner of the weekend) 2. Cure 3. Rilo Kiley 4. Gorillaz. A bit disappointing set for me, compared to last time. Felt like a bad setlist, whenever things started to heat up, they did some new calmer song 5. Florance Road. The good thing thay came out of the rain is being able to see them
    • So since Andy Copping has stepped down and this new booker has taken over, we’ve had Green Day (who Andy never managed to book) and now potentially Blink 182 (another Andy never got done) is this just coincidence or do you think Andy never actually pushed hard for these bands?
