Based on this lineup i'd guess they did quite well last year! Noah Kahan and Hozier probably were got on the cheap and shifted tons of tickets - and just spotted Chappell Roan there too!

 In this individualistic climate where guitar bands are a rarity and the industry is focused on solo artists, you would think the idea of a British guitar band headlining Glastonbury for the first time in their career would be more welcome, whether you like The 1975 or not 🙂

Thanks for digging that article out!

If objectively looking at The 1975's popularity (big outdoor shows, sold out arena tours, 4 x o2 sold out etc), can't think of another British band who'd be as deserving (again, looking through popularity lens) of a 1st time Pyramid headline slot. There aren't many contenders, a few bands from abroad potentially yes, but not from the UK.

I think they're big enough to do it, so in that sense they're deserving.

 

However, there's no doubt they're divisive.  Folk are less likely to be neutral on them or want to attend out of curiosity.

Objectively, they're not a rarity. My local sweatboxes still seem to be filled by bands and there's even a few showcases for local bands, same as there ever was.

 

The rarity part is more that since some point in the early 2010s, there's not really been all that many guitar bands rise to headliner status in the way there were in the 90s & 00s. Sure, a couple have come through to be arena level, and a few have even gone to higher levels than that, but it's not to the same degree as what came before.

Been a while since there's been a new-ish guitar act on there.  Post pandemic it's maybe only been Wolf Alice.

I was talking about 1st time headlining British bands - not those who've headlined before or aren't British. Also was referring to bands that are known 1st and foremost as a group, not to solo artists with a backing band.

In an episode of The Rest Is Entertainment they noted that a “band” has only been in the number 1 spot for 3 weeks this entire decade, one of which was the Radio 1 allstars for a charity single (most of whom are soloists) and the others were The Beatles and Little Mix. This is compared to 141 weeks in the first 5 years of the 90s.
