GF was able to book top 10 global artists 10-15 years ago without much effort. None of the mentioned headliners this year are in the top 50. Sam Fender is not even in the top 500. That's what I meant with irrelevant (which I agree is open to interpretation).

It is true that just one year of terrible headliners won't affect attendance. But give it a couple years with bad bookings and a fallow year and it could all change pretty quickly.

Olivia Rodrigo is 100 percent in the top 50 global artists.

what matters most tbh is how big they are in the U.K. in the last few years they’ve booked Coldplay (biggest band in the world) Elton John (speaks for itself, AM ( stadium band), Paul McCartney (speaks for itself). A couple duds like GnR and SZA changes nothing, glasto still gets the biggest artists about.

Also you’re massively underestimating how big O rod, the 1975 and Sam fender are. Fender is playing stadiums in the summer!

Sadly loads would think either The 1975 or Fender are great headliners regardless of what you or I think.

It would take something drastic to put the festival at risk due to lack of ticket sales. Remember there are loads, like myself, who know that it’s not all about the headliners.

What anyone thinks is irrelevant. If they currently sell out stadiums in the UK, they are good headliners.

Just when I thought it couldn't be any worse... Going from a weak headliner to a completely irrelevant one.

Given how fast the music industry is moving, and if these turn out to be the actual headliners, GF will lose much of its relevance. On the bright side, getting tickets will become easier once again.

The 1975/Olivia Rodrigo/Sam Fender are a really good illustration of where the music industry is, actually. In terms of size it’s a really solid set of headliners that will have zero impact on the demand for tickets.

Things have changed. The biggest acts have found out they can charge far more for their tickets than previously and still sell out. As such, it's going to be harder for the likes of Glastonbury to still attract global superstars with the peanuts they offer.

Regarding Fender, he may not be huge globally, but in the UK he is a stadium act and it does seem a case of when, rather than if, he headlines the Pyramid

With no offence intended, think Glastonbury's deep cultural ties to the landscape of British music means that, on a personal level, I'd like to see at least one homegrown Pyramid topper.

If Rodrigo is locked, then The 1975 or Sam Fender both do the job very nicely.

Dont see how she isnt booked at this point. And the demand is there for sure. The single day tickets for Governors Ball sold out in minutes along with vip front viewing ones for that day and the weekend just to be able to see her. People figured out its cheaper to see her for $130 at a festival and close to the same show vs 500 in the nosebleeds of an arena on resale.

For British acts (or acts with close ties to the UK) then headlining Glastonbury will always be something people want to do.

You can earn peanuts at Glasto and silly money in stadiums - happily doing both in the same year.

For global superstars it does not hold the same appea.

I'd prefer The 1975 to Sam Fender, but that is very much a close-run thing. For me, unless Harry Styles pops out of the woodwork, not sure there's any British act bigger than either in the headline conversation who haven't done it before among current chart contenders. (Have touted Dave a couple of times and I guess now that they are about to be out-and-out R+L headliners, you could put BMTH in the conversation, as unpopular as that may be.)

Would be very happy if Sam Fender is one of the headliners. His show at the O2 was brilliant, and the biggest singalong of the night was (surprisingly) “People Watching”, so I think the new songs would go down well with the Glastonbury crowd as well as the older ones. His last set at Glastonbury was a highlight for me that year. New album out in a few weeks so timing works.

10-15 years ago is irrelevant to now. They had a lucky run back then of international big names (Bruce, Stevie, U2, Beyoncé, the Stones though they’re English anyway) who wanted to tick it off. At least 3 of them took a very long time too-they certainly were not done ‘without much effort.’ Ticket prices for acts own Arena and Stadium shows have gone up hugely since then so for international acts Glastonbury looks less attractive.

You’re underestimating this years headliners though. Acts will always be booked on how big they are in the UK. It’s one act who hasn’t sold much recently but is an all-time revered legend and two of three that have all sold out Arenas and had multiple number 1 albums (and in Rodrigo’s case singles) in the U.K. Times change, that’s all. As of now they’re all very relevant in the U.K.

Is there a Pulp rumour? That would be awesome.

Totally agree. I think it’s more speculation than rumour, but they are headlining Tramlines in July and as far as I remember it was announced as their biggest hometown show, but not a “festival exclusive”. So I’m hopeful!

    • So, what would the weather have been like at this year's festival?   It's been shambolic around here, the rain is soul destroying and showing no sign of letting up, bar odd sporadic days here and there. Disgraceful for June.   What's it like down there? Have we had a lucky escape?...

    • belated thanks for this ended up going, was a good evening and a great venue with a cracking beer selection (give the festival a few tips on that). Never been in before despite reasonably local.       Main takeaways from the film (as someone who didnt go for much later). The festival has changes a lot since then apart from the Green Fields that looked the exact same.  Me and my mate both agreed that Shambala is today than Glastonbury.   Cool piece of merch aswell.
