Far from the worst 1st poster (hello 2016!), I'll definitely see (clashes depending):

Guns N’ Roses, Lizzo & Manics

Interested in:

Elton John, Blondie, Candi Staton, Måneskin, Nova Twins, Royal Blood, Sparks, Texas, The Chicks, Warpaint & Yusuf / Cat Stevens

There's a couple I've not heard of so I'll check them out, but it is definitely lacking a WOW moment.

Rock Werchter (week after Glasto) just added the following names:

zwangere guy, king princess, raye, weyes blood, ashnikko, holly humberstone, the snuts, the reytons, lil lotus, body type, the mary wallopers, black box revelation, bear's den, viagra boys, sons, cmat, hideous, xink, blackwave, vintage trouble, sofi tukker, danielle ponder, the murder capital, just mustard, stone, dead poet society, mayorga, dermot kennedy, inhaler, teskey bros, portland, billy nomates, destroy boys

It’s weird barely any of these are on the poster. Surely acts of their size would be confirmed by now?

Glasto tend to make the first poster quite eclectic. There will be plenty of decent bands to come.

So what's the word on social media?

Landed with a thud or are folks going digitally taps aff?

Pretty positive from what I've seen, definitely feels like less griping than usual. Yer Hot Take fella has found a few corkers though.

I think Glasto has been a bit disappointing for indie landfill in the last 10 years.   There's been some, but nothing like the glory days of the 2000s.

There's plenty of it about, booked at other festivals, I'm always surprised that Glastonbury doesn't capture more of them.

Because it was massively popular and taking up stupidly high spots like the Fratellis and Kooks subbing the Pyramid in the 00’s, but not quite so much now with it falling out of vogue a bit. Still loads of it getting booked, but you’ve got Kendall Calling and all those other like-for-like festivals clogged with it these days so no need for Glastonbury to have quite so much, and thank fuck for that.

Letting all this sink in, there do seem to be a lot of acts with a big "where might they play" question - and a load presumably still to be announced, which add to the traffic jam.

We currently (pretty much) know:

  • All 3 Pyramid headliners (AM, GnR, Elton John)
  • 2 Pyramid subs (Lizzo Sat, Lil Nas X Sun)
  • 2 Other headliners (Wizkid Fri, Lana Del Rey Sat)
  • 1 Other sub (Fred Again Fri)
  • 1 WH headliner (Loyle Carner Sat)
  • 2 JP headliners (Hot Chip Fri, Christine & The Queens Sat)

Then there are a load of acts who are (or certainly have been) at this kind of level:

  • Alt J are a previous Other headliner
  • Fatboy Slim headlines wherever he plays - although that could be Silver Hayes
  • Phoenix have JP headlined in the past
  • Royal Blood are at least sub level
  • War On Drugs were mooted as a JP or Park headliner
  • Manic Street Preachers were due to headline the Park in 2020.

Then a load more that people are expecting/hoping for in the inevitable future announcements - including Sam Smith, Rosalia, Pulp, The Prodigy, Queens of the Stone Age, Blackpink, etc.

Obviously not all of those may happen, but it does beg the question of where some of these people are going to play?

Either we end up with a pretty stacked lineup at the end of the day, or some big acts will be getting pushed into "smaller" slots than they have carried off in the past.

Fatboy did SH on his quest to tick off every stage last year so won't be there.

Royal Blood can definitely do 3rd down pyramid.

TWOD is locked as JP i think?

Alt J are no way still other headline

I think Glastonbury is going about it the right way aiming for 50/50 across the bill. That’ll allow Female acts to graduate to headlining. As for now if there aren’t Female headliners available there aren’t any-that’s why Emily has never made any promises. What has been made available is three stadium sized acts willing to play for the money on offer, so while I’d much rather have had Swift, or Dua, or Madonna, it is what it is.

Absolutely!

I not asking for it to dominate the Pyramid, or even high up on the Other,  but I'd still like a little more on, say, the JP etc.   I can't get to as many festivals as I used to these days, and I'm surprised/disappointed by how many fairly decent (imo) indie bands that are touring don't get booked.

This is worrying, felt like a slightly cut down version last time, what does it mean for this year

In October, Glastonbury made headlines when it announced that ticket prices would rise by £55 to £340 (including booking fee). “We put it up [by] the minimum we could,” said Eavis. “In order to do the exact same show as last time, we would have had to put £100 on the ticket. That’s the amount that costs have gone up.”

It means that everyone needs to stop getting upset that if the price goes up and the talent level doesnt meet that price you have to realize the cost increase is to keep the lights on. Lets expect more dj's on those small stages again and less bands.

My prediction of hitting £400 in 5 years is way ahead of schedule now. Next year itll go up another £25 easy.

From what I've seen there's been a lot of criticism about the all-male ness. Perhaps just my echo chamber

Considering the quote Emily gave about GnR and Lizzo she should have never bothered with GnR and just put Lizzo up top on her own. Massive slip up saying co headline and Lizzo could def headline and not doing it.

I think the big problem with (all male) indie bands, is that Glasto are aiming for a 50/50 gender split on the bill.

So if you think about the 4 biggest stages that might have indie music (Pyramid, Other, JP and Park), with maybe 9 acts a day each - that's about 110 slots in total.  If you want a 50/50 gender split, that's 55 slots for "all male" acts.   Once you've got your mainstream rock/pop acts, electronic etc - there's maybe space for 20-25 indie bands across the whole weekend?

Which would also free up Pulp to sub Lizzo......

I mean whatever works. But if youre going to give an interview and say those things about diversity and then just make it seem like youre fixing it visually and nothing more, whats the damn point.

The vast majority of these wouldn't make the initial poster, especially as it has fewer names than in the past. And as others have said, the main poster tries to have as much diversity as possible
