Reminds me more of Bowie but it absolutely has a 70s shape-shifting piano-to-soft-rock vibe consistent with both artists.

They headlined ACL and lolla in 2018 and were against Travis Scott. I wouldve guessed Lolla, Acl and Outside Lands for them on this run. But they settled for Life is Beautiful and Primavera LA. Boston Calling and Shakey Knees are really good mid size options for them, but its too close to the start of the uk dates so it mightve removed them as an option. Both these line-ups are very solid tbf. Is there just a lack of acts that's leading to this year's being less impressive?

Theres still plenty of acts that arent doing anything and the other thing is sometimes you have to elevate artists to higher spots than they warrant so things look out of balance. There are years when everyones available and they all hit up festivals and such so it looks very impressive all around. Thats a double edged sword because if no lineup is that unique or interesting then you dont get people traveling. Why should I go to Texas or Chicago for those lineups if itll be pretty close to that in Los Angeles, San Francisco or New York. Bonnaroo, ACL and Lolla are all under the Live Nation umbrella so theres going to be tons of crossover in who they all have. Its one way in which they lock artists in for the whole year and things end up similar. So ACL this weekend will have some artists that will hit the circuit in 2023. But at Mad Cool in Madrid, when I last saw AM, they were good. Alex Turner's reputation intrigues me. When I first saw them, it was in 2011 during the early part of his Yorkshire Elvis phase and I found him quite chatty and keen to interact with the crowd, yet he seems to have become a bit more reserved on stage of late. Maybe it's just his persona for The Car era or something. All interesting thank you. Is he possibly having to concentrate on playing keyboards more regularly? I'm unsure of the keyboard/electric piano on stage for his use is something of a prop, or if he does actually play it on a lot of the TBH&C material? charlierc
Quite a few European nations are missing from this tbf. Either works out as available for a few festivals in July after their UK stadium run or a very selective touring arrangement.

On the Tranquility tour the piano was used for Four Out of Five, 505 and Star Treatment by Alex, with some of their additional live musicians playing on it on other songs (One Point Perspective being one such example). From what I saw, however, he did not play the piano at all on stage during this summer's festival dates, but I heard he did play it at the NY King's Theatre gig a few weeks ago. So I guess we'll have to see what the balance is when more Car songs are added to the set.

More of the same, really, and I’m still kind of struggling to get excited over another whole album of this stuff, but it’s good for what it is. VCK
The new stuff sounds like Tranquility Base part 2. Which is an album with some interesting ideas, but musically it lacked the excitement of the early stuff which made them so popular to begin with. I get they're not teenagers any more and can't keep writing four chord songs about going on nights out in Sheffield, but their more recent stuff has lost that great energy they once had. NorthernSoul52
Got to respect them to the props for sticking with Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino Pt II-esque vibes. Given how that material dropped like a stone at R+L however, will be very curious to see how it plays in stadiums. Given their itinerary runs close to that played by The Killers this summer - a band who started with a few more crowd-friendly anthems and then dropped the majority of less-receptive cuts across the run - will be very curious to see how heavily they lean on their two most recent records. (They don't exactly scream stadium, do they?)

scatteredscreens
Early impressions coming in, sounds decent, I'm probably in the minority but it sounds like an album I'd enjoy. I don't need lad bangers. https://www.stereogum.com/2202743/arctic-monkeys-the-car/reviews/premature-evaluation/

I think I’m probably gonna end up echoing his sentiments in that whilst I ended up quite liking Tranquility Base in the end, I didn’t need pt.2 four years later from them. I don’t want to put words in peoples mouths or anything, but I reckon there must’ve been a mass huff when a lot of their older fans put on Mirrorball for the first time and heard the direction it was going in. theesundayroast
Really looking forward to this one. I was craving a TBHC part 2 as soon as AM7 started to seem like it was materialising so this is right up my street. I'm sure I remember one article describing it's sound as similar but 'back down on earth' as appose to the moon. Going to be a toss up at midnight which album gets the first play (TS, AM, Carly) but thankfully I won't have too much work to do on Friday morning so hoping to get through all three!

I don’t mean their debut / AM or anything like that sound, just there appears to be some crossover when compared with TBH&C.
