I'd have been up for an orchestra tbf, though I think that might be more better in a concert hall setting like the Albert Hall or Hammersmith Apollo than Glastonbury Pyramid. That and obviously AM kinda already did it with a few songs with strings in the 2013 show, even if obviously songs on The Car are more prominently using them (and indeed there's a version of 505 with strings that sounds less terrible than the version they are doing).

Plus yeah, I'm not sure Alex was 100% better after the scare that nearly saw them pull out of Glastonbury. Although saying that it was better than I expected. Plus I was amused by his capers during Pretty Visitors.

Just seen them at Bilbao BBK and imo they were the best you are going to get at this stage in the monkeys' trajectory.

Similar setlist for the most... View in place of teddy picker was great.

It felt like, comparatively to what I saw on the Glastonbury broadcast, that the classics had been sped up, not completely but a fair bit more. Perhaps they've taken things on board. From a fellow drummers point of view, I sometimes felt like Matt would come in from a chorus fast and then adjust himself slower again. Wonder where/who this has come from. 

Alex's voice was bang on throughout. You can see the whole persona and show that they're going for. Maybe translated to the pyramid it just didn't hit.

Resurrecting this thread, probably is somewhere better placed for it in the last two years, but I haven't got the time to trawl through.

 

Went to the Andy Nicholson exhibition in Sheffield on Saturday. It was great, some fascinating stuff if you're an AM nerd like I am.

 

Oh how I miss them.

I see, very interested to know what they are all up to. 

 

With Matt doing so much work with Drumeo I was hoping that was the start of the next chapter and getting AM back out there. Hopefully they get back in the studio soon.

I seem to remember when they were promoting The Car that there was chatter they might not try to be 4/5 years until their next release as they were for the AM-TBHC and TBHC-Car gaps. And hey here we are. Particularly as they're not really an act just to tour for the nostalgia like The Killers seem to be doing.

True but I would've liked one more in 2024, given it would've maintained an every 8 years thing after the first two came out in 2008 and 2016.

 

The first two are still cool but I think Miles is busy touring his solo stuff in 2026.

Essentially they're on indefinite hiatus with the emphasis on indefinite. Different to a normal album gap.

Arctics will feature on a War Child charity album “Help”

Some may remember the 1995 charity album “The Help Album”. 

There’s a follow up happening this year. 

Arctic Monkeys will be featuring on it with a new song (a song that was unfinished during the AM recording)

After that, they are done.

I think they lost interest in at least half that record a long time ago. Tbf I'm surprised that, with the 20 year release anniversary this month, there wasn't some kind of announcement yet for a 20 year remaster, given that seems to be the frequent thing.

 

I'm aware the rumour that Arctic Monkeys might have stopped being a band has been about for a while - there was speculation around the time The Car came out that they were treating it as a farewell, right from Mirrorball being treated by a few as Alex saying goodbye to the band. But as some have posted out, this Redditor who posted this has been accused of contradictory comments in his posts. I guess we'll see in due course.

I felt like a lot of the lyrics from The Car seemed to be looking back at their career tbh, lyrically it seemed like the end and it kinda generally felt like a late period album released by an older band.

 

I still do like the album though tbh and I feel they have a very consistent discography. Maybe in the minority but I like the TBHC/Car material just as much as anything they did prior.

It marries up with what I was told, which dates back to the last tour and why I moved heaven and earth to get to the last gig in Dublin on the tour.

 

Pains me, but I knew it was coming. There was also subtle hints on the last tour for the nerds like me, not least Perfect Sense at the end of the last gig. Quite poignant when you listen (and look) back.

 

They'll always mean the world to me.

Yeah I saw that too. Bizarrely the reddit guy has deleted his account now. 

 

Do you think you'd hear anything before it's announced? 

 

If it's an old tune from AM era as he claims then that interests me way more than a Car B-side that never happened. I'm on the AMUS forum and the mod there is very in the know and he mentioned probs over a year ago about a unreleased tune he'd heard. Wonder if it is the same one.

I'd imagine that same tune, yeah.

 

Doubt I'd hear before tbh. Don't have any specific AM contacts - more industry contacts, which is where I initially found out about the 'indefinite hiatus' a couple of years back.

 

We shall see. 

 

I really hope Alex continues to do something, be it a solo project or something else. He's far too talented not to.

Any need to formally split up? Unless there’s some real beef it seems like they could just leave it, and come back one day … or not.

I'm not even sure they'll officially announce it tbh. I can't imagine them doing that. I suspect they'll disappear into the night and some, or probably most, will work on separate projects.

 

When I was originally told about this, the terminology used was 'indefinite hiatus'. My interpretation of that is that they're essentially done as a band, but it leaves the door open should they decide to return as a band one day.
