Autechre in Leeds last night. Bloody hell that was an experience

Two very fun days of music this week:

 

Ratboys at Zerox in Newcastle on Tuesday night. Smallest venue (felt surreal as that is my local nightclub on a night out) and crowd I’ve been in to date but very cosy atmosphere and the band were absolutely excellent. Their new single Light Night Mountains All That sounded phenomenal live, thoroughly recommend! Would love to see them on the Park stage one year, mix of blissful indie rock but also some songs that are cannonballs. Met the singer Julia at the merch table afterwards and she was incredibly kind! Very underrated band and would love to see them back in the UK very soon when their new album releases in February.

 

Followed that up with Swim School on the first night of their UK tour at The Grove. Heard a lot of great things about these guys from a good friend and with their debut album getting raves I thought I’d check them out and wasn’t disappointed at all! Superb energy from the band and Alice Johnson is one of my favourite vocalists I’ve seen live in terms of vocal power and stage presence, wasted no time in hyping up the crowd and even got involved in the moshpit which was very fun to watch. Saw someone describe them as similar to early Wolf Alice and I can totally see the comparisons.

 

Basht. were also terrific as the support band, very reminiscent of Wunderhorse and Gurriers, can see these guys going places in the near future! Met both bands after the show and once more they couldn’t have been kinder people! If you get the chance to see either of them at a show soon or a festival next summer (no doubt they’ll be popping up on lineups in the next few weeks) I highly recommend!

King Gizz in Den Bosch with the Sinfonia Rotterdam Orchestra. 

 

Great as always. 

 

Phantom Island album in full followed by an intermission (which they played through) and then a load of Gizzard goodness/madness.

Sprints supported by Alien Chicks last night in Leeds. 

 

Alien Chicks had loads of energy but didn't grab me musically. 

 

Sprints were great though sound wasn't best at times IMHO with vocals not the clearest.

Sprints last night in Sheffield. Fantastic! Karla is such a great front woman. Had to laugh when she called out to the 6 Music Dads... I guess that makes me a 6 Music 'Mum' 😅

 

Sound was good for Sprints (lighting awful), but not so great for Dog Race who were supporting

Bob Dylan, Swansea Arena.

 

Have seen Bob a fair few times (including at Glasto), but I think this was the best one. Mesmerising.

 

There was minimal lighting on the stage, no phones, no talkers and fantastic sound. So the music really took centre stage. If only all gigs could be like this.

 

Swansea Arena is a great venue - would thoroughly recommend it. Have been 3 times now and the sound is always very good.

 

And agree with @archiegow above about Basht - excellent!

Yeah I went to night 2 it was excellent, 5th time seeing him and definitely the best

Yep I was at Brighton, my tenth time seeing him and probably the best he's sounded.

 

Although RAH night 3 last year was pretty immaculate too.

 

Got quite emotional during Every Grain of Sand realising there's a good chance it would be the last song I ever saw him play live.

Saw Baxter Dury last night in Leeds. First time seeing him and loved it. band was very tight and he took centre stage and ripped through the set. The academy wasn't full but full enough for a good atmosphere for a Sunday night.

Saw The Offspring at the O2 on Friday night. A really fun show with plenty going on throughout - the crowd and band were fully up for it. Made for a really enjoyable gig.

Baxter Dury in Leeds last night. It's years since I last went the the Academy, and forgotten what a good venue it is. Slightly higher stage a bonus for those of us shorter in stature, and good sound.

 

Baxter was his usual charismatic self. The new songs sound great,  and lots of dancing was done.

 

Joshua Idehen supporting. I've never seen him before, but hugely infectious spoken word performer, with a message of positivity. Great fun!

Rescheduled CMAT gig in Leeds tonight. First time seeing CMAT and thoroughly enjoyed it- great show. Enjoyed Fancy Hagood in support as well.

Brogeal at Sidney & Matilda in Sheffield. I really enjoyed them at Live at Leeds earlier in the year, and in this tiny venue the were even better. Great atmosphere and mix of songs between raucous and more melancholic. Their playing is superb, with a mix of regular and more trad instruments, switching between different ones throughout the set. Less than £15 - absolute bargain!

Kneecap in Bristol last night. 
 

Absolutely superb. Mad crowd (looked like a corner of Glastonbury) , great atmosphere and they were brilliant.

Picked up some last minute tickets for their gig in Brixton a couple of weeks ago and was little disappointed tbh.

 

No idea what they were playing but it was very knob twiddling electro ..industrial(?) compared to the more guitar-based stuff that I was hoping to see (crowd were loving it though - mental!)

 

Can't see the synth/mixer decks they had stagefront at brixton in your pic, so maybe a different show?

Loyle Carner at Newcastle City Hall last night. Been a fan of his for quite a few years so been waiting to see him for so long and it was absolutely worth it. Such a compelling and magnetic presence on stage (as were his band) and had the crowd in the palm of his hands the entire time - it was very obvious how much fun he's having on stage and how humble he is with the crowd's reception. Ain't Nothing Changed, Loose Ends and Ottolenghi were amazing singalongs and his poem at the start of the encore was very touching - was very pleased that no one drunkenly interrupted or shouted out during it. Hopefully will be seeing him at TRNSMT next year!

 

Rejjie Snow was also enjoyable as the support - do think there were some cases where lip synching was involved but wasn't sure. Managed to get the crowd hyped up the whole time and was a solid presence on stage.

Aha yes a "rave" show. They've been doing either rave shows or orchestra shows on this tour.

Royel Otis at Brixton Academy last night (first of 3 sold out shows). Loved them on The Park this year and loved this gig even more. Upbeat indie pop and a crowd who wanted to sing along to every tune. So much fun.

English teacher and Orielles supporting at Sheffield Foundry last weekend. Orielles were a bit strange, the music was good, but the vocals not great. 

English Teacher were good but some of the songs didn’t grab me.. I’d only really heard Paving Slab before the gig..

Saw Kathryn Mohr, Disiniblud (Rachika Nayar & Nina Keith) and Kali Malone (electronic set) at EartH Theatre in Hackney a couple of weeks ago.

 

All three sets were very good but especially the Disiniblud set, love the album and it really came to life live, fantastic stuff.  

 

Kali Malone did one piece which built up and then blew all my senses, possibly in a good way, but certainly an experience!

Saw Gary Numan in Cardiff this week. I’m not a huge fan - never seen him live before, but he is such a good performer. Clearly an emotional time for him given the recent death of his brother, but he held it together. Would see again.
