Prof Dame Angela McLean, chief scientific adviser at the Ministry of Defence, told the Science and Technology Committee that is was “quite unlikely” for a full return to how society was before the pandemic struck, according to PA media.

“I suspect we just won’t go to work if we have a respiratory illness,” she said.

When asked whether this would be mandated, she added: “It would be most powerful if it became socially unacceptable to go to work with a cough.”

I would actually love this. I'm lucky that I can just work from home as opposed to taking a sick day for a minor cold, so it would require employers of people who can't work from home to be a bit more understanding on sick leave. But if there were less people at work and on the tube with the lurgy I would probably get far less colds. This last year not having any proper colds has been an unexpected bonus. I had two shockers winter of 2019.

What a strange retort lol. It's ok to admit to being wrong 🙂 especially when you so vocally were a know-it-all about it.

Back in your box and go troll someone else..

We won't be in 12 months of lockdown, again your being hyperbolic. This will be the final lockdown, of that I am confident.

Yeah this is the important bit, this should be our last lockdown but that doesn’t mean that restrictions won’t be in place. They should be for a little bit whilst we see the effects of all the changes we make just to mitigate against any possible increases in the virus.

The very nature of a UBI would mean not optional and everyone would get it. Think your paranoia has reached new levels if you consider a UBI being 'owned by the gov'. It's irrelevant anyway cause no way a tory gov is implementing a UBI

Everything has to be paid back eventually.

It's a strange policy the socialists seem to like and I've never got it at all. Makes sense for those that need it but that's a benefits system (which needs to be more agile here)

But as you say won't be an issue for the next few years anyway

I'm not trolling in the slightest. Just saying you can't admit you were wrong about something we had to hear you bang on about for weeks and during which you were incredibly condescending to anyone that dared question you.

And if they increase testing? they can keep this going as long as they want if they use "cases" as the metric

Nope it is still crazy, there is currently a debate about how soon to end lockdown but nobody is arguing for keeping it in perpetuity, do you still think post-Covid there will be another excuse to keep it going?

Right on cue,

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/help-56096264

Researchers want the government to add fatigue, headache, sore throat and diarrhoea to the existing three symptoms which trigger a Covid test.

Currently, anyone with a cough, fever or loss of smell or taste qualifies.

Testing for these additional symptoms could pick up 40% more cases, King's College London and the Zoe Symptom Study app have suggested.

If they keep looking for more "cases" and spread the search wider and wider we will never be "post covid" the disease is here to stay we will have to live with it, as I said they can keep restrictions in place as long as they like* if they only use "cases" as the measure of the problem. The problem with this extended lockdown is it sets a precedent and so can be used to control any future crisis, once you lose your freedom it doesn't come back without a fight.

*and as long as the public put up with them.

Whatever - downvote away.

Back on ignore.

They haven't shifted at all. It's always been out there that case and infection rates were equally as important as hospitalisation and death rates.

uh?

No one cares about flu infection rates, they only care about the load it puts on healthcare services.

It's *NEVER* been the out there that case and infection rates were equally as important as hospitalisation and death rates.

The fact that the two couldn't be separated until now is something else entirely.

It's just the level of silliness that people are going to. 'Oh we can have nighclubs with thounsands of people opened up this year, as long as rapid testing (which currently has 40% accuracy) is done on the door'.

care to say why we can't?

Meanwhile we still don't even have kids back at schools yet. It's just pie in the sky nonsense at this point.

Some people are able to consider two distinct and separate things and what might happen with those things in future times.

Even Spaffer in this instance.

The work from home policy has actually allowed me to leave London and move to Bristol in a few weeks, something I am grateful for.

I am in the same boat; I have left London and moved back home to Devon and looking at buying down here. I will not be moving back to London and need to broach the conversation with my employer when the rush back to the office inevitably happens, but this is welcome news as that delays that awkward conversation for a good few months yet. And if that conversation does not go well, it means I am still employed for a good few months yet as I will have to leave if it is not agreeable!

I will also need to negotiate/accept the pay cut to the regional levels and getting rid of the London uplift but that is a different debate entirely.

Fully open with social distancing measures in place I could see.

Fully open means the music scene and other events are back, not dead. Summer 2022 if we're lucky is looking like the earliest for that, though I'm getting increasingly concerned even then it won't happen.

What do you think your employer will say? I think a lot of people will be looking to do what you are doing.

They need to introduce a UBI at this point, otherwise I can see shit hitting the fan in 12 - 18 months.

Presumably an optional one for those without jobs? Not being owned by the government in that way unless I absolutely have to be

Lots of companies are announcing they are fully remote anyway. On a broader level, having less of a 'london focus' is surely better for the economy at large.

My advice for the above scenario would be to ask your employer 'What specifically do I need to be in the office for, that is now clearly not being accomplished remote'. Or, if they really kick up a stink, tell them you've 'not had a vaccine yet and do not feel safe'.

My bet is that very few HR teams will really want to tackle these.
