Don't mean to sound a downer but against what benchmark is it 'impressive' to have inoculated less than three quarters of one percent of the population by now, given the urgency and the existing infrastructure?

In the fact that we’re leading the world in number of people vaccinated with limited supplies currently. I think we’re doing pretty well on that front. Can’t be universally shit all of the time.

No one is expecting everyone in that group to be instantly vaccinated when using Pfizer due to how hard it is to store, once Oxford is signed off we will really have the ball rolling as it can be stored and distributed far more easily and the benchmark will be easier to get

Well, Uzbekistan could have been leading the world on that metric by approving the vaccine at the start of stage 1 trials.

What the tweeter was saying was that the speed of deployment was impressive (not that we started first).

Far too early to say that we are vaccinating fast enough.

I guess what we ought to look at is the % of the vaccine that we have .... that has been used ? we can only use it as fast as we get it ? and that will always be slower with pfizer

Ok, I take it back. We have a world-beating Covid vaccination speed of deployment (well world-beating insofar as absolutely nothing to compare it with).

I think it's good to question things rather than just assume blindly that 250,000 a week is 'impressive'.

totally agree .... although its probably fair to asses it once we get oxford going .... although it does appear we have slipped back on timings already .... hopefully this can reverse once oxford comes into play

I do find this very odd, on the same day we are expecting there to be more patients in hospitals with Covid than at any point during the pandemic. Something just isn’t adding up.

It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to dismantle the NHS by blaming them and their lack of staff and capacity for the deaths, especially in the next couple of months when it seems inevitable from the current numbers that they'll be overwhelmed and have to make tough decisions.

The solution? Obviously it will be privatised healthcare...

Yep, and the cynic in me wonders if the reason they aren't (currently) including anyone under 50 in the vaccination list (unless underlying health issues) is because they know these people will want to travel and therefore will be happy to pay the likes of Boots £128 for a Covid Test in order to be free travel anywhere. Money they can't make if everyone gets a vaccine.

At the same time, have heard some rumours of vaccination centres doling out any spare vaccines left at the end of the day to anyone passing by, but that doesn't sound right?

As I understand it the Nightingale at the Excel was useful as contingency, but ultimately rarely utilised as it became clear that covid’s effects extended beyond the need to ventilate people (it was set up in the early days of this).

The NHS has now created new wards in local hospitals where the necessary diagnostic facilities - and crucially staff - are located. I’m sceptical that the people listed in that tweet who were allegedly asked didn’t know that...

I’m no fan of the government, and they are definitely anti-NHS, but this isn’t a failure in my opinion.

There’s been a bit of talk on that on here ... I guess it’s better that they get used up rather than wasted ... but maybe they should build in some tollerance for no shows ... so it gets to the right people

Makes sense that they'd do that- stops them going to waste and I guess that's an individual on the day decision instead of a top down strategy

For sure, otherwise if words gets out around any specific location they'll end up with mega queues of people outside toward the end of the day, waiting "just in case".

Mine is about 1/4 mile away. Would feel guilty about queue jumping though when people more in need than I are still waiting.

I have a friend who works at a local doctors surgery.  She was vaccinated last week due to a 'no-show'.  Word has gone round and although there's not yet queues outside the surgery phone is red hot with enquiries about getting jabbed on the 'off-chance'.

Sure that won't last. He's so used to complaining about Europe he won't be able to stop now.

we'll see...think it will be seen as a win for UK and then most negative effects will be slow to be realised and won't be noticed by most. No deal would have been very different.

I can well believe that. Was in our surgery the other day and they were telephone booking people for their vaccination appointments at the local hospital. Good to hear it happening.

Ah, my mates call me Daz, so that’ll do just fine! (Never really been into the whole formal titles thing! None of my lab call me Prof). Not a very professorial moniker, but don’t think it’s going to ruin the illusion any more than being called Toilet! Happy Christmas!

Happy Christmas Toilet (I can call you Toilet, right? or would you prefer Dr Duck?), Has been good to have someone almost as knowledgeable as me on here.

Always Prof. Duck to me!
