The Mud

One of my overwhelming memories from last year was the smell of the mud. It was proper janky. Ploughing through it when it's thick and nasty like that was frankly hellish, especially towards the end of the day. What causes it to smell so horrendous? I don't think I can even describe it accurately. It's like... cheesy feet... crossed with... sour apples. I think. How would you describe it?

Definitely a mix of cow craps and cider/rotten apples...I'm from the countryside and that smell is pretty familar but never had it that strong before. Sure I smelt like it myself until early July.
