Future headliners

I'd be shocked to see most of te names mentioned here ever make the step up to headline, Foals definitely will one day, Tame Impala would need another huge album to push them forward to that kind of level, I think The XX might have missed the boat now, then the likes of Chvrches/Wolf Alice/Bastille/The1975 I really struggle to see them ever being big enough to top the bill

think they'll follow Editors trajectory, sub at best then downhill from there.

Bastille?? Really?? Royal Blood will surely be there if their next album is a success. I think they will be there next year high up the bill. Foals after their next album will headline. Tame impala if they have a completely storming album next they will, anything less than they won't. Blur surely back soon? Arctics by 2020? Nothing but thieves if their album is as good as their first?

cant see the likes of jamie t, paulo nutini,  NGHFB, haim, the xx, disclosure.chvches.  headlining pyramid stage. as much as i like xx, disclosure, haim, chvrches more suited headling other stages. as for jamie t , nutini, nghfb they are pretty much yesterdays news.

I agree, I think with Glastonbury you always have to remember that they also want something that the masses can sit back and marvel at in front of their TVs. Coldplay was definitely a lazy and tired booking but you can't deny it would have been festival porn for those sitting at home watching it. Most of those names are just never quite going to cut it in that respect.

I think the XX could easily still headline as long as their next album isn't a total flop, although they're maybe not the best indication their youtube/spotify plays currently dwarf some of the other acts mentioned here like Tame Impala and Foals. Jamie XX even headlined Best Kept Secret on his own this year.

I'm not sure of many things in this world, but I am sure that Queens of the Stone Age will never headline Glastonbury.

I think some of you are massively over estimating how these indie bands you love are perceived by the masses.

Haven't noticed anyone mention Green Day, they're definitely big enough.

Oasis will likely headline when they get back together, but probably not until the second or third year.

In terms of acts on the upward trajectory, I think London Grammar might have what it takes.

I'm also sure that you're correct here Winslow, no doubt about it. I could see them back to tear the other stage to pieces again

London Grammar need to come out with a solid new album soon if they want to keep any momentum going and avoid the dreaded 'Friendly Fires curse'.

I'm happy to admit there is a lot of bias in my suggestion but I don't think it's impossible. Their albums are getting more user friendly and appealing to the masses. I think they'd be a lot more of an Arcade Fire booking than a Coldplay booking - probably not the biggest crowd and a few people would kick up a fuss but there would be enough people in the field loving every second of it that the booking would be justified.

Perhaps it's just a pipe dream but I'm not going to give up on it!

Like others have said I think there is plenty of potential options for future headliners. For whats it's worth I think we are looking at something like this:

 

First time headliners:

Foo Fighters, Ed Sheeran, Stone Roses, Biffy Clyro, Guns N’ Roses, Fleetwood Mac, Taylor Swift 

Controversial booking (e.g. Kanye, Jay Z): Drake or Rihanna maybe?

 

Repeat Headliners:

Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Blur, Mumford & Sons, Florence, Arcade Fire, Kasabian, Paul McCartney, Beyonce, Adele (obviously not for a few years now).

 

After one more huge album:

Queens of the Stoneage, Noel Gallagher, Elbow, Kendrick Lamar, Foals, Tame Impala, Disclosure, Ellie Goulding, The Black Keys

 

Possibly after a couple more big albums:

Royal Blood, Haim, Wolf Alice, The 1975, Chvrches, Bastille

I think it depends what kind of direction they go with the second record, if they follow it up with something as big as their first album, then they could go to pyramid third/sub, there really was a lot of hype around them first time out

Can't see Blur coming back any time soon. They released an album and toured last summer. If they were going to headline again it would surely have been last year.

I think in terms of a single album it's probably bigger than anything Foals have released, but I still think they're a fair bit off being able to match Foals in terms of what they offer live, I'd say with another good album they'd be around TLSP level, that's what I was basing my thinking on anyway

I don't think we're over estimating anything, just looking at future potential. The headliners have to come from somewhere, we've been lucky enough to go through a golden era of legends and massive acts headlining but will come to and end, so without recycling headliners bands get pushed up the bill. 

Look at it this way, when foals released antidotes did you ever think 3 albums down the line they'd release an album like what went down ? Did you think they'd be future headline material, tbh they should have headlined this year, touring that album did you see Yannis being the front man he is now ? I didn't, and that's the point, we don't know how these bands will develop but we're hoping they can take that next step.

Agree with you 100% on those bands that will never be big enough. Also, I personally don't get the hype with Wolf Alice to be honest. I think Queen and Adam Lambert could be contenders for next year given they played Isle of White. Foals I think for sure in a few years. Also think if Hozier puts out another great album he will be in for a shout in a few years time.

I only watched Foals on livestream and they got 0 reaction from the crowd except from the first 20 rows except for Inhaler and that's because Yannis hyped the crowd for like 2 minutes before it. I can't see them headlining really

reckon R/L will give Royal Blood a big push next year and have em as a co-headliner, and possibly as an exclusive. don't see em ever stepping up at Glastonbury though - seem like a bit too much of a flash in the pan and i think the hype will die down after the next album

as for future headliners, it's pretty damn hard to say. obviously there are the already-there acts who just haven't played the festival yet/in a while, but acts who are gonna rise up to do it? i can see the thinking behind some of the acts mentioned in this thread, but it just seems like a lot of them (Paolo Nutini, Jamie T etc) have gotten about as big as they could. can't see them getting much bigger than man stage subs (at Glastonbury, anyway).

i don't think Glastonbury would ever book them. they seemed like a bit of a shit headliner for IOW and that's a festival that revels in that kind of dad-rock booking

bit of a funny one Pyramid sub. numerous occasions of acts playing there over the past couple of years and getting zero interaction from the crowd. far too many people there to position themselves for the headliner rather than to see the sub themselves. i don't think it can have any baring on Foals - they're one of the most obvious future headliners at the moment

Glastonbury atmosphere is generally rubbish for most bands on the Pyramid. 

Is a mix of a few things - people camping out all day for headliners, mud, etc.

I have always been disappointed with bigger band atmospheres at Glastonbury but in all fairness it is a lot better than it actually looks on the tv

I'm only really sure that Ed Sheeran, Foals and Tame Impala will/should do it in future. Although I had Biffy in that group not long ago, not sure they'd be in there now.

Biffy have gone backwards. 

They headlined Reading on their own in 2013, now they can only co-headline. They're not even headlining Benicassim. Can't see them ever headlining Glastonbury now
