I'm probably going to get shot down for this but I've gone for offsite prepitched tentage for next year myself. It's just about at the limit of what I'd be prepared to pay though.

This year I'm flying solo at Glastonbury, wife wants a year off after having done the last 4 and several before the previous fallow. She's a 90s pre mega fence veteran who introduced me to it in 2009 so if she fancies a break then who am I to argue.

The last few years we've shared a cv with pals in East and always have a squad of tent people with us who appreciate the extra space, more peace and quiet and the facilities a motorhome provides (cold beer, cups of tea, hot water, phone charging, etc). We're all in our mid 40s now. For various reasons none of them are going in 2017.

I'm travelling there from the North East and would prefer not to have to spend Tues nt queuing, racing for a spot or hauling gear across site. If I can spend less time in traffic queues too then I'm happy. Being able to keep my car nearby is a bonus too meaning I can take more of my own drink, restock with booze and clean clothes too.

Staying offsite doesn't bother me in the slightest, fact is I'm out all day and when I go back to the tent it will be for R&R only so I'd like a bit more space, peace and quiet and less chance of people tripping over my tent or having my personal space invaded by some thieving scally with a blade whilst I'm out of the count. If I get a shower or two over the 5 days and a 'posh' poo or two in a non reeking bog then even better

With a personal income of c£40k p/a im not by any means rich, nor am I poor either. I love Glastonbury and aim to get the most out of my time there in my own way. For me it's my holiday. I've got a 5 day pass from the Mrs to go have a blast and let me tell you I will!

I find it helpful to put the costs into perspective. I know people who would think nothing of spending hundreds on a couple of nights out by the time you factor in booze, drugs if that's your thing, food, club/gig prices and transport. For my week of fun and peace of mind it's worthwhile.

£7k for a yurt is mental though but maybe a different perspective again. For that much I'd want to be serviced daily by my choice of Kelly Brook and Scarlet Johansen lookalikes, assuming I had the energy though.

I'd buy a place for Russy, so that he could politely 'correct' them in their way of thinking. They'd hear a final shout of 'c**ts' as they screeched away on Saturday in their Range Rovers, vowing never to return...

Or the ultimate expose as one of the hoorays bellows "Russy old boy, haven't seen you since Eton!"

See I honestly don't think I would. It'd be too easy to lay in, faff bout and not get up and into the festival til the afternoon. (Although I was thinking I'd be paying more like a grand for two of us on one of the cheaper options rather than going stupid).

Staying in the CV fields previously I normally don't get in before 1pm most days. However I don't normally get back til 4am so certainly don't feel I'm missing out. It's a great feeling arriving into the T&C fields from C when everything is in full swing. I often end up missing an act somewhere as I get distracted there watching random walkabouts and Bramble FM.

And which omniscient being decides what are 'better hands'?  You? You and your mates?

They paid their money, they can do whatever the fuck they want to. Stay offsite for as long as they want. What are we talking about, a few hundred/a few thousand people out of 130000+. How's that going to change the character of the festival?

Where in anything I have written have I said that anyone should / will choose where the the tickets will go?

All I've said is that if these people are getting tickets but not making use of them as intended then i think they would be better in others hands

I think we should start a kickstarter fund to pay for Russy to camp in the poshest offsite place there is.  I'm sure he would absolutely revel in telling lord Sebastian Galbraith-Knobtickler all about what a cúnt he is.

The shuttle bus to WV would be deal breaker for me. Not so bad on the way in but we were told to start queuing 3 to 4 hours before you need be at the coach station on return. Much quicker to walk across site.

Good to know, thanks.

Here's a lovely article from Tatler, to be honest I don't think I used strong enough words...

Gosh!!!

The Pop-Up Hotel Glastonbury party

Black tie and wellies was the dress code for The Pop-Up Hotel's Glastonbury party, just a stone's throw from Worthy Farm. In came Lord Shaftesbury, suited and (welly) booted, and Lucy Cox and Jo Roderick in flowing gowns and galoshes. They downed Earl Grey martinis and tucked into hog roast (what else at a festival?) then bid all their cash on Glastonbury bricks from Glastonbury Reclamation Yard, among other items. Oodles of cash was raised for The Willow Foundation and appetites whetted for the festival ahead. But whether the guests venture out to the Pyramid Stage in their black tie remains to be seen.

MIllfield massive - haven't they always attended the festival ?

The upper middle class / ruling class have been getting w***ered on the farm since day one - do people really think otherwise ??

Depending on how far off site they are if I was old and rich id probably shell out for a pavillion or whatever. I wouldn't judge people for it either, some of them are probably pricks. But you'll find pricks in every camp site if you go looking.

aye, last time I stayed in general camping we were surrounded by pricks, who seemed to be at their tent doing Nos balloons and shouting at each other any time we came back.

by contrast, at WV last year we had 2 men in their 50s on one side who had been going to Glastonbury since the 80s, and a couple from Australia on the other side who we barely saw as they were out exploring pretty much all day. neither seemed like pricks.

It's maybe worth recollecting that WV was only created when the festival stepped in to rescue people left high and dry when an off site operator folded in the run up to the festival.  Rather than a indication of a step in the wrong direction, its evidence that the fest likes to take care of the attendees.

Bollocks. It was a great opportunity to expand.  They could very easily have stopped it the festival after rather than making it bigger and bigger every year afterwards.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just got a 4 person bell tent for me and my mum, pretty happy with that! Not cheap at £550 - ish, but in my eyes totally worth it for the experience and now we can relax in the knowledge we can just turn up to the pre erected tent and enjoy the festival. Wanted a podpad but they had all sold out.

Hopefully WV is everything we hope it will be !

Don't expect glamping, it's not. It's basic. But being a few minutes from the car, flushing toilets and showers are worth it. Also the tents are reasonably spaced. I've done years of festivals camping but now I need some sleep/cleanliness. I don't mind camping or walking but hate carrying stuff for miles. Each to their own!
