Thoughts on the new single?

Its pretty decent though not a patch on anything on Since I Left You. But setting the bar a bit high comparing it with that, plus there was so much variety on that album.

Cant wait to see them tomorrow night at Primavera, have literally no idea how it's going to pan out!

i think it's good. is it as good as material from Since I Left You? hard to say. worth the sixteen year wait? probably not, but i'm sure it'll be a grower and i'm very excited to hear the new album. insanely jealous of those going to see them live at any point

I saw a bit of video recently from before they released their first album, and the impression I got is that they're audio butterflys, who can never settle on one piece of work for long enough to get it finished because they get distracted with a new idea.

I have my suspicions that new stuff is only really happening because the funds from their first success are starting to dry up, and that's concentrated their minds a bit more.

Can't say I'm hugely impressed with this new one, tho it might sit well within an album. Plenty of the tracks on the first album would have sounded odd if you heard them away from how they're set within the album.

i am loving that new Avalanches song

to be honest a band that had passed me by. I had heard the name and a few tracks but that was it. Heard the new song on Radio 6 this morning and really liked it. I will give them a go

although those two singles (title track and Frontier Psychiatrist) were obviously huge standalone songs, so if this is the song they're choosing to release to preview this sixteen years in the making new album you'd assume they think pretty highly of it. i hope it's good, but am prepared for massive disappointment

I get the strong impression this isn't anything of 16 years work, but something done recently - and where they've been pushed to finish stuff that probably would have been abandoned without that push. I suspect the vast majority of everything they do remains unfinished and/or in the bin.

Because of that butterfly nature I'm expecting the new album to be stuff they've done recently, rather than the best of what they've done.

It does sound like The Avalanches, which is pretty impressive considering the personnel changes.  It's not as good as their best work, but then again few things are.  I like it, better than the Roses comeback for sure!

i've just been thinking (again) about the time I saw them in 2001 .... i really does rate as just about the best live show I've ever seen. Dexter's (and the other guy, no idea who) mixing was just out of this world.

Today it would sound like old hat stuff tho, cos Soulwax stole the idea and milked for all it was worth. Badly!

2014 wasn't great. There were a lot of large groups of very drunk, quite young people acting like it was the first time they'd been allowed out. I had a really fun weekend but I wouldn't go back again. One of the most poorly organised festivals I've been to.

A far cry from the Mad Ferret festival of 2009 in Platt Fields park with The Streets headlining!

This morning Emily Eavis instagrammed a picture of the new album artwork saying she loves the new track. Before that she hadn't posted a non-Glastonbury related picture in ages. Reckon this could be a hint that they'll pop up somewhere?

You would think so, but she seems to post about bands she likes that aren't playing all the time.  Not normally this close to the festival mind.  Time will tell, would be great for them to pop up somewhere.

christ now that i think the Radiohead secret set chances are gone don't get me started on an Avalanches secret set. i don't see it, but obviously with them being more electronic oriented there's plenty of places they could fit. don't know why they wouldn't just have them announced though as it'd be huge

I wasn't sure if I liked it, but I've been walking about for the last 5 minutes singing 'Fraaaankie Sinatra' so I think it's going to be a grower.

Feel exactly the same. Initially underwhelmed but it's already an earworm! Emily's got to get on the phone and pull some strings. A last minute Avalanches addition would sky rocket my anticipation to levels not seen since Portishead/The Stones

I love it, I was pretty late to the initial party anyway so I've only been waiting around 4 years. Perfect for Danny Brown and a Doom feature, that'll do for me! Probably best 10+ year comeback single I've heard recently anyway (although I actually loved Indy Cindy from Pixies so maybe I'm just young and easy)

Loving that new track, on the live performance front has anyone ever heard this? Incredible mixing, would love to have seen this http://www.theavalanches.com/music/big-tent-set-2006.mp3

the mixing would have been better if it had been Dexter on the decks - seriously! (prtetty sure it wouldn't have been in 2006).

I've seen The Avalanches twice. Once was the full 'live' act, and the 2nd was 'just' - there was no 'just' about it! - Dexter and the other guy on the decks.

It's the best mixing I've heard heard i my life, waaaay beyond anything else, and so creative. Stuff like mixing Bob Dylan with Madonna.

Have just started listening to this mix - thanks - but have to go out and will pick it up when I get back (and in fact I'm going to grab a copy to keep too).

She doesn't really do 'oh my god, how did they get them?!' acts. She'll probably book them next year when they're everywhere.

    • As many said before, not my favourite Primavera. sh*tty weather is something I'm not really used to when enjoying music. Poor communication (more than 1 hour long radio silence during the worst rain) didn't help, but the main problem was me. I decided to leave the venue after things seemed to be getting back to normal. Massive Attack were supposed to play again (with Hymn of the Big Wheel back on the setlist!) as were all other artists on the smaller stages (including Fcukers with one my favourite albums of the year). FOMO was at an all-time high. However, after 4 hours in the rain, I had to admit to myself that I'm not cut out for this. I wasn't even that soaked (water-proof jacket worked). I was just fed up with the rain, wind and cold and wasn't able to enjoy music anymore.   Also, they should stop ignoring the growth of some artists between signing them up and their actual performing. Both PinkPantheress and Ninajirachi sets were ruined for me by completely inadequate stage choice.   However, I felt very much the same way after the 2022 edition and have thoroughly enjoyed all subsequent editions. So I'm still buying early bird tickets for 2027 and hoping this was a hiccup not the start of a downward trend.
    • I will definitely be buying a 2027 early bird pass, partially because of the priority reservation privileges for the Ciutat sets. Hopefully the organization will take action to improve upon this year's failings. Because I thought the free water options and sound quality were an improvement over last year, so clearly they can actually implement positive changes.   I also hope all the douchebag chompers get in the sea, cause I was more bothered by them than in the past few years.   Highlights: The Cure, Ninajirachi, Knocked Loose, Current 93, Blood Orange.
    • Similar feelings to a few others on here. Not my personal favourite edition but a long way from giving up on it. Felt overcrowded at times and there are just too many people there that don't seem to like music that much! Hardly went to main stages which was the plan. Highlights Ralphie Choo, rusowsky, Gorillaz, Geese, Gelli Haha, The Sophs, PinkPantheress, Dijon. Accommodation booked for next year. Thanks for your company and comments over the past year.
