hmm i dunno. most of it certainly sounds like The Avalanches that we know, but the magic that was there 15 years ago, for the most part, seems to be missing. need to give it more listens to form a proper opinion, and it's by no means the disaster it easily could've been, but you do wonder what the fuck took them 15 years to make this. very little evolution in the sound, although there are a few little bits (listening to Sunshine right now) that bring me back to hearing Since I Left You for the first time. and like with most albums that have taken a lifetime to come to fruition, you've gotta wonder: what now?

I'm not really blown away by it, sadly. No idea why because it's entirely what I expected but it just doesn't seem to hit the spot.

I am however glad the majority opinion is more positive than mine though. Would suck to have them come back after all this time and consensus be that the record's a letdown.

I'd never listened to them before but I now like the album. It took a bit of getting used to. The hook on Frank Sinatra is very catchy.

Is the debut album similar?

It's not dissimilar, Since I Left You is a great record. You should definitely give it a listen.

Debut album is arguably better. One of my favourite albums of all time. If you like this you'll probably love the debut, it's a bit more beats oriented and a bit less blissed out but it's got a similar aesthetic.

I do really like this album though. Loads of highlights on it - Frankie Sinatra is a low point for me though. If I Was a Folkstar, Wozard of Iz, Sunshine and Saturday Night Inside Out are probably my favourites.

One thing I noticed after playing around whosampled.com for the two albums - the samples used on this album seem to be a lot bigger. Some of the excerpts on the debut are tiny bits but stitched together to make a whole, whereas this album seems to be made of bigger pieces (and guest vocalists/rappers).

    • Consider that the sound quality can be better near the front bars right behind the soundbooth rather than closer to the stage, like with mbv. And of course, the front sections are full of talkers too.   The most courteous move would be to have conversations in the very back of the field.
    • I mean...I do think it all needs more regulation, but god knows how when it's all so global...but there's so much stuff on there that is messing with our little minds. But also, he has given these companies till September, and well...he'll surely be gone by then. I think social media ban for under 16s will likely happen, but I think regulating it for everyone is better. It's the not the kids we should be worried about, it's all those middle aged doom scrolling keyboard warriors like me.
    • I agree the prices are tough for locals. You can see if Porto timetable is the type that works for you and it's a terrific city. Also cheaper. https://www.primaverasound.com/es/porto/lineup-porto
    • thanks XXialac! i guess for us the most important aspect will be a festival that starts very late in the day, specially in these southern countries were it can be really hot! The combination of visiting a new city, having good lunches and enjoying a festival is a absolute must for us. Also, we like headliners but the undercard is just as important; truly enjoyed Men I trust, NewDad, Big Thief this year so from that angle it is not really a big thing if a festival is somewhat smaller.    Apparently my bad, i had 5 in my system but 0.5 (10%) increase is still huge. I am not sure how teenagers can afford these prices............
