To be fair, I'd whinge less at sheeran than coldplay or Muse. I'm at peace with the fact that any new faces that are gonna headline are not gonna be for me, so rather them than old stuff that's not for me.

I agree on sheeran, but if what scottie has said about next year it looks like the headliners model is going to be 2 repeaters and 1 new act. That's completely bonkers

Did anyone hang around to see Sheeran a couple of years ago? I can't remember who we watched before him but we thought we would check him out.

A noticeable amount of people started to leave very early in to his set (including us) because he has absolutely no stage presence and it was boring to watch.

I wouldn't read too much into anything ME says but even if it is the case it doesn't mean it's going to be the case every year. I mean, it could be, they could be piss bored of the entitled screeching they have to put up with on Social Media whenever they try anything different and it's fairly rare to have a year with no repeats anyway. It seems unlikely they would adopt any kind of formula to me though.

Personally I'd love them to go nuts next year and give it to three unproven headliners, give them a leg up. They don't have to be anyone I like because I'm 39. Put Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar and I dunno, Imagine Dragons at the top of the bill. But three new acts to the festival could also be boring - Emily lets it spill in December that it's three 'new' headliners and then after weeks of excited guesswork it turns out the be RHCP, the Strokes and Noel Gallaghers HFB. To sum up...I'm not sure really. it's impossible to please all the people all the time?

Popular music has generally moved towards EDM, and the massive EDM artists like Guetta are only getting 2nd stage slots at the likes of TitP, V etc. And when the festival does go for a relatively well known commercial act outside of the generic indie bands, such as Kanye, they get pilloried for it. I think they just need to bite the bullet and bump up the likes of Foals, Tame Impala, Kendrick etc on their next album/touring cycle. The alternative is to go for whatever is popular and not a repeat, which will lead to a full blown influx of V-esque headliners such as Calvin Harris, Bieber etc. At least the likes of Foals, Kendrick etc whilst not the most commercially successful would bring some artistic credibility and are excellent live performers. I just fear the festival have driven themselves into a corner where they feel they have to book a certain level of headliner, which is ridiculous because they know full well they're lucky enough to be in a situation where selling out is not going to be a problem.

Or the festival follows the Annual eFestivals BRIT Awards Hatefest Zeitgeist and chooses the least hated act on here to headline.

Leaving Little Mix as clear favourites to headline next year.

And @Hugh Jass cheering for Aguilera and Stefani.

I don't necessarily disagree, but there's no guarantee that a year or three of Foals or Kendrick etc would mean the festival keeps selling out. It's a gamble.

Whether we like it or not, many people buy tickets in the expectation of seeing huge acts headlining the Pyramid, and those tickets subsidise the green fields, the theatre, the naughty corner etc.

For the festival to remain the size that it is depends on it selling out, and selling out seems to require, at least in the thinking of the organisers, a massive headline act.

We may be stuck with things as they are for a while, but at least there's plenty of stages.

I'm quite happy to be 'stuck' with the current situation. It works for me. I like seeing big headline acts that I wouldn't see anywhere else at any other time. I've seen folk like Beyonce, U2, Metallica, Kanye, The Who that I wouldn't have forked out my own money to see.

The atrocity exhibition of the Muse / Coldplay double-whammy aside, I think the bookers are getting as close as anyone could to the impossible task of pleasing everybody. Even when disappointing bookings like The Who crop up, it's clear that they've been trying for other people (Prince / Fleetwood Mac) who've let them down.

In the case of younger bands working their way up to headline, if they're more than just a flash in the pan then they'll probably manage it. And I don't think this year's headlining roster suddenly improves by switching Adele for Foal and the Lads.

That Pyramid can be a very lonely place for a solo artist and it takes something special to maintain audience interest (particularly in the daytime). I thought the same of Laura Marling in 2011 but have seen her on smaller stages since and really enjoyed it.

* Disclaimer: the above statement in no way endorses Ed Sheeran to headline the Pyramid stage in 2017

Yeah, I concede the point. Inasmuch as that neither The Foals nor The Muse are for me, the former may have been a slightly improved booking for thems that like that sort of thing.

There's no defense for Coldplay / Muse 2016 - but, as I said, I don't think it's indicative of any sort of wider malaise in booking policy.

You probably just need to judge on a case by case basis. I doubt too many people would be gnashing their teeth if it was Neil Young and Radiohead coming back again.

we've got to moan about something though...

I think the reason for the fear is because ME suggested that 2 of next year's headliners will be repeat bookings too.

Though I havent seen the exact quote so it could well be a load of old bollocks.

Yeah, always got to remember that ME's quotes whilst well-meaning, are often misplaced, luv-'im.

Remember when he said he had 5 of the biggest acts in the world who had never played the festival for 2014, and we ended up with Arcade Fire, Metallica, Kasabian and Dolly Parton?

Wonder if Shakey nicking and throwing Pegi's xylophone mallets in 2009 was where it all started to go wrong?

That and he finally got sick of how she spells her name.

In reference to another thread, I definitely think you should sign up for Twitter, Russy, and moan away to your heart's content - and our amusement - in 140 characters.

A breath of fresh miserable air in the Twittersphere.

Time will show Hollerback Girl as the post-modern classic it really is.

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
