New Emily interview

Who else are you excited about? Which other female artists?
We've booked some really interesting African women as well as some great British women who are doing very well at the moment. Obviously I can't really tell you names because it's all a bit secret… Bands like Savages are great. Grimes. And obviously Wolf Alice are doing really well, that's brilliant to see. Laura Mvula I love.

There's one particular British woman that's doing quite well at the moment too, of course
Of course… We love Adele. She's an incredible artist and brilliantly honest and funny and real and that's what everybody loves about her. She's a great example because she doesn't put up any pretence. There's a certain pressure on women to perform in a certain way or be giving off this kind of image, while Adele is just honest and true and funny and just about as popular as you can get.

She'd be a good headliner...
She would, wouldn't she? It would be great to get her…

The comments about Adele being so honest are interesting. Adele always comes across to me as someone playing a character, and she knows that character strikes a chord with people. I always considered that part of her talent and her intellect as an artist. I'm sure Adele is that cheeky, giggly sweary woman to some extent, but she definitely turns it up a lot and plays to it when she's on stage/in the media.

Coming from a regular in the Radiohead thread, that's quite the admission!

I had actually been holding out hope for the sub theory, but didn't dare admit it in public.  Given the response to her live shows, I don't think anyone would seriously suggest she'd "work better" as a sub now.  She'll be the biggest contemporary artist to play...ever?  I can't think of anyone bigger who is actually still releasing the popular albums who would has ever played.  REM and U2 were slightly closer to their heyday than McCartney, Dolly, Bruce or Bowie, but not exactly contemporary.

I agree she is giving the people what they want. a common girl done good. they are lapping it up. Doesn't hurt she has a belting voice. she reminds me of a Barbara Windsor that can sing. She will bring in a massive crowd and will do some for all the people that complain their are not enough female headliners

I am usually over cynical about media trained pop stars... but I feel she had changed so little over the course of her rise to fame, that this is unfair. She comes across as honest and very similar to her early days. If its an act, shes a brilliant actor and its been very well orchestrated.

Playing a character isn't something disgusting or heinous. It's intelligent and requires immense foresight. I'm giving her a lot of credit because I thinks she's smart enough to know how to connect with a mass audience. I'm 100% sure Adele has many similarities to her 'character', but she's also smart enough to know which aspects of her personality to amplify. Don't forget her musical education. She went to a school which is renowned for producing stars.

Brit school soulless plastic product

Sad to say that about the Brit school, my daughter went there and my youngest goes on Saturdays. You may not understand this but most people in entertainment have trained somewhere before they made it, the Brit school provide tuition for kids whose parents are not that well off and it's an incredibly creative place.
Charm x

And yet no mention at all of one of the most critically acclaimed british artists around, PJ Harvey. The woman who other festivals are grateful to have headlining, but emily sees fit to banish to the other stage, and not even as headliner.

Meanwhile past-it geriatric boy band new order get a headline slot.

Girl power!

    • There’s a few in there which could go either way or I’m not bothered if I miss but think that’s now be pretty set.  Few rubbish clashes like Kasabian/Loyle plus Reytons/Pixies/CMAT but I’ll head with the lads to the most popular one.   (And yes no Byrne or Twigs, just can’t into either)
    • I saw somewhere they were advertising Lewis' day as him live on Glagow Green and only mentioned Amy Mcdonald and CMAT as support, 0 mention of the festival  I completely agree this will probably be the last one which is a shame because the first 2 seemed so promising and now its turned into middle of the road rubbish with acts you can see everywhere else  Anyone know if the BBC are covering it next week as it'll be fascinating to see how full (or empty) it is
    • Did anyone catch Viagra Boys last night? A rollicking good set, with a little more free jazz than I expected.   if you’re up early, Walabi is doing a super job in the Cupra Pulse. There till six.

    • They really dropped a bollock on their lineup this year. They went with Richard Ashcroft because he did well as Oasis support - But realistically, you're not getting 50k people in a field to hear the 4 or 5 songs they know at like £70+ a ticket. Can't get my head around the Kasabian booking, either. Finsbury Park was a bold move for them, and yes it sold out, but I think you're more likely to see people make the journey to London if they want to see them rather than Glasgow. A second similar capacity show was always going to be a big ask for them.
