pearl jam are considered a legendary act now?! what madness is this! they werent even that popular at their peak in the 90s, hence them not headlining them when it might have made a bit of sense.

Thankfully the festival organisers seem to agree with me when I say this terribly dated brand of rock will never ever headline the pyramid.

Boring!

haha, thought you might think this...unfortunately I think a lot of people will agree with you

I think pearl jam at least have a lot more in common with the ethos of the festival than metallica/foo fighters (eddie vedder being involved with in a lot of anti war stuff)

and im sure you'll agree eddie is a lot nicer than the eviI dave grohl!

Are people really questioning if Pearl Jam are headline status? I mean I'm a fan but Arcade Fire headlined last year and most people don't even know they are a band, let alone any of their songs!

That's true for pretty much everybody, I don't know that many Glastonbury headliners would be able to boast that 4 billion people know who they are, or their songs.

Think most are just questioning whether they're suitable for Glastonbury. I'm sure almost everyone accepts they're headline status, but probably more suited to IOW/Download/Soni/their own gigs. There have been a couple of calls for them on the Other Stage but only a couple.

Arcade Fire are a bit weird. They're a massive band with gig/festival-goers, but outside of those they must be less well-known than almost any headline band.

Unfortunately I wasn't alive when Pearl Jam were in their heyday so I've no idea how popular they were amongst the general public, although my dad knows them ("Pearl Jam? They were shite" he once said to me), and he only knows bands who were huge. He even asked me who Nirvana were the other day, when he saw their name in a headline about Dave Grohl.

Am I the only one who thinks IOW and Glastonbury seem to have a very similar demographic? Admittedly, I've not attended IOW so maybe someone who has will correct me, they just seem very similar.

From what I've known of people going IOW doesn't attract all the fringe just a big wodge of the main demographic. It only has a few stages, fraction of the stuff.

Bestival possibly mops up most of the rest though

I always imagine it to be like a Glastonbury audience minus the young people.

It may have changed from when I went to IOW in 06, but at that time the crowd seemed very mainstream compared to Glastonbury - The M&S food hall seemed particularly popular!

Been on a PJ binge the last few days.

This would have to be my favourite song of theirs...

great song that old son ..........as for the IOW festi i think most people would have been very pleased if we had had fleetwood headlining glasto or some of the others so i dont think theres that much of a difference between the 2 festis ...well apart from size , cost , and the fact that as most festis are nowadays its an arena festi where as glastos wot i call an open festi .......

Its sad how few open fests there are now, even today I've seen 'tips for sneaking your booze into festival arenas'. Glastonbury seems to be the only major UK open festival left?

My enjoyment of a festival would be seriously hampered if I couldn't take my drink with me, and I had to buy a piss-water £4.50 pint of Tuborg every time I wanted a drink. Always put me off of going to Reading, IOW etc. because there seems a lack of freedom in that.

IOW and Glastonbury have similar demographics and acts I'd say (in terms of getting the 'big acts') but as festivals I get the impression they are completely different animals.

Anyway, the main reason I came here was Pearl Jam.

Where to start with them? Are they 'boring rock' as Russ suggests or is there something more to it? ;) The only song I know is Even Flow, from one of those guitar hero games I believe when I was younger. So I'm all ears.

Start with their debut album Ten.

To me, Pearl Jam are the sort of band that a lot of my age group listened to when they were 14 and getting into something that wasn't top 40 pop. I grew out of them, but listened the shit out of them back in the late 90s.

I'd certainly go see 'em if they were at Glastonbury. Never really listen to them these days, but had a listen this morning and I'd say Vitalogy, No Code and Yield hold up. No Code was always underrated -- Hail Hail ftwrock.gif

Vitalogy is their weirdest and best, without question IMO. Ten is terribly dated.

some of the album tracks on ten are dated yes, i think the singles stand up quite well tho

Is it a surprise that an album like Ten is dated? It's nearly 25 years old and influenced so much of the music that came after it, its almost inevitable that it seems somewhat stuck in its era.

That said, the recent remix goes some way to lessening this.  Still, killer songs though, and always special to hear them live.
